As mentioned, the 'Golden State', when times were good, gave more to the Federal Government than it got back, with that money going to less productive states. The boom of the 1990s was fueld by California's Silicon Valley. And although we are going through some hard times, mostly caused by the idiotic Real Estate bubble of the 2000s, we will deal with our problems and come out okay

TOMK - My particular feeling about the South is complex. I actually lived there as a teenager, and have spent time in many Southern states. I stayed in Mobile, Alabama for a couple weeks after Hurricane Katrina, and saw first hand the devastation in New Orleans, Slidell and surrounding areas within a week of the disaster. The South is the first and only time I heard someone use the term 'nig

My first contact with San Francisco was in the military. He was Navy from San Francisco and I was Army from the Midwest. I remember him getting annoyed if you called it 'Frisco'. "Man, call it San Francisco, or The City." Whatever. I first went there in 1975. I went to Golden Gate Park and it was filled with hippies. I was thinking maybe they hadn't heard the 60s ended

You can see a young Davy Jones in Oliver on the Beatles first appearance on Ed Sullivan. They all had their talents. Thank you TOMK and ISBZ for posting info on the sessionmen.

By the way, I knew right after I'd responded to TOMK that it was stupid. Of course this isn't a political blog. Thank god. Political postings here have about as much relevance as a Grateful Dead thread.

My take on Bill is that he didn't have a net, anyone to fall back on. He was truly working class who grew up in the deprivations of post war London. I think he had a fear of poverty that made him keep his head on straight. I don't think he felt comfortable being out of control. And didn't the band once cruelly dose him with LSD? Bill knew that Mick and Keith were quite well off

TOMK - ???????????????????? Washington had slaves. So, I know what I'm talking about. "In one of his meticulous agricultural journals, dated 1765, Washington regrets being late to separate his male hemp plants from his females. For a master farmer like George, there would be little reason to do this except to make the females ripe for smoking." - So, there's a great po

The studio version is so groovy. Brian and Bill swing on that thing. I put it on a compilation surrounded by a couple jazz tunes and it held up well.

Sat down at a dive bar in Burbank a few years back, next to me was a guy with hair down to his waist, the great Peter Tork. He didn't have any airs about him. I was just turning 12 when 'Last Train to Clarksville' and the TV show hit. If you listen to their greatest hits they have impeccable production. It would be fun to know who was really playing on some of those songs. And

Mary, Mary, where you goin' to? Not only did Mike Nesmith inherit millions through his mother's invention of 'Liquid Paper', he also made millions from a settlement with PBS. They had reneged on a deal for his video company to make copies of their programs for sale.

A slaveholding, pot smoking, non-religious man. The loony right in America claim the Founding Fathers were like them, and yet when you ask them for a name, they can't come up with one.

The single that put them on artistic par with the best of the Beatles. The bass is buried and seems an almost conscious decision not to have it be so prominent, leaving the guitars and drums to dominate. It is true that it rarely gets played well in concert. They should open a few shows with it like they often honor 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'.

Wow. It makes you wonder what the hell kind of music promotion is done in America now. I say America because at least videos are still seen in Europe on readily accessible channels. And of course, classy Bill & Charlie were nowhere to be seen.

I've read stories about the wedding, but I had no idea there was this big of a security f-up. Why would a celebrity couple be drug through that gauntlet of jackals?

Some of the boots are better than what the Stones come up with. I don't know how many times I've headed to their merchandise booths all excited to walk away with nothing. I'm not sure if it was a boot, but I can kick myself for not getting a T-shirt with the Stones Steel Wheels logo on the front and Guns and Roses on the back to commemorate their shows at the L.A. Coliseum in '

What if we agree that it depends on the topic? What if some never to be proven questions have merit? Recently there was a thread concerning What If The Stone had broken up after Exile? It really got me and others thinking of how the landscape would have changed and how the band would have been perceived.

It's Darryl! For all his vaunted Miles Davis background he can't play the simple bass line on this song effectively. I've heard him live screw it up on stage. It's the most important instrument to the song. I don't have BTB handy, so I don't know if he plays the studio version, but he sure can't handle it live.

JIMMY C mentioned 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' as being too fast. That's only when they stick it in that last sorry part of the concert when they're trying to jam in warhorses so the rubes think they got their money's worth. Unless your horny for fireworks, that's the time to dash to your car and get out ahead of the crowd. I have never been to a bad Stones concert that

Wow. I agree with almost all of them. I thought 'She Was Hot' was the highlight of the evening at Dodger Stadium in 2006. And 'Back of My Hand' was really good at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005. Isn't it sad that we never say 'Darryl kicked ass on that', or 'Chuck really nailed that'? They are surrounded by mediocre. It would be good to have a guest pian

It's just tragic to see Mitch Mitchell's rapid disintegration. And it's obvious that Mick T has his own problems keeping his physical self together. Wikipedia doesn't mention what specific health issues Mitch Mitchell had. I guess Noel Redding's liver gave out at 57.

Well, with so many former fans not planning to attend any future Stones shows, it will much easier, and cheaper, for me to get an excellent seat from scalpers at the event.
