But is there an actual reason the Stones picked East Troy for the Steel Wheels tour instead of a Chicago stop? Was Soldier Field or Comiesky Park not available? Did Cohl get a better deal from local promoters for the shows to take place at Alpine Valley Music Theater? Did they think they could kill two birds with one stone (pardon the pun) by bringing fans in from the Chicago and Milwaukee areas

Quotejbwelda That part about BG is entirely plausible. And inflating the attendance records (except on the tax returns of course). Par for the course. jb The Stones have a rep for being overly ruthless, but if BG did pocket money that belonged to the band on the 1981 tour, then Mick was 100% right to deny him the SW tour, even if by all accounts it broke Graham in the process. I don't c

Oh, I wasn't trying to suggest that the San Francisco shows didn't sell out; areal shots of the stadium alone confirm the place was packed. I'm sorry if I gave the impression otherwise. I just remember reading when I was a kid press releases of the Stones playing an open-air concert at Candlestick Park in front of 146,000, and being in awe of that figure (not to mention it happe

Thanks for keeping this post going exiles! Def one of the all-time great posts on this site. I love these pics from San Francisco, especially with some reports (in actuality, clever PR spin by Bill Graham) that the Stones drew "a crowd of 146,000 for an open air-concert at Candlestick Park--the largest in the city's history." Lol, in actuality this would have meant that the Ston

1.) 1976 Earl’s Court Lotus Everything that’s been said about the Urban Jungle stage being a downgrade of a grandiose concept that shortchanged their fans of the great show the Americans got is true of this stage. I don’t know if it’s the maze pattern or the the blue and yellow lightbulbs on the outer edge of the stage rather than the neon lights from the ‘75 lotus, but the 1976 Earl’s Court lotu

Keith has said that when he wrote “Wild Horses,” it was about the anxiety he was feeling over the notion of going on tour right after Marlon was born, and as such he wrote the song as a lullaby for his son, and that Mick re-wrote his original lyrics into the heartbreaking ballad we all know and love. Has Keith’s original lyrics for “Wild Horses” ever turned up? I know of no demo or recording

I know this is the ultimate long-shot wish list for a Stones collectible, but does anyone know if there’s something out there autographed by all the original members of the band back in the 1960s, with Stu’s, Mick Taylor’s and Ronnie’s autographs added later? All the members of the Stones signatures on one document?

Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle was the first tour where the giant screens were a standard part of the show. However, as Spud pointed out, prior to VL, the screens were not part of the main attraction, as they were somewhat small compared to the ones we now all know and love. The SW/UJ tours featured two video screens measuring 18ft x 24ft flanking the left and right sides or the stage. (source: )

Let's hope the Stones hit some untapped markets and/or ones they haven't played in years. There is now plenty of venues in the US and Canada that didn't exist when the Stones toured in the 1960s 1970s and 1981/1989 (heck, in many cases, since B2B/No Security). And some cities still have places that they Stones could have easily played during those times. Just a list: Alberta

QuoteTornAndFried Great advert. Can you imagine the volume of playing an Ampeg SVT with two 8X10" cabinets in a small club! My favorite amp to this day is my first real one I got when I was a teenager: a late 1990s Marshall VS-15R. Despite being a 15 watter, not only is the tone majestic, but that thing is loud: one day I was practicing with it, and my sister called from across the stree

Quotebeachbreak The 1972 tone was incredible live, heavenly. My favorite is the 1973 Europe tone. It’s perfect. Marshall-like crunch on the top and shiny tightness in the mids, but with a bottom end that would make JLo jealous. It's literally the Sofia Vergara of guitar tone. But I do like the 1972 tone a lot.

QuoteMathijs Quotestevecardi Did the Stones ever use the Ampeg V-4? A couple of books and magazine articles I have from the 1980s/1990s like Guitar Legends published by Guitar Player Magazine states that after using the SVT prototypes on the 1969 tour, the Stones switched to the V4 in the early 1970s (which would make sense given their use of the VT-22 and VT-40 combos in the studio), then went b

Thanks for the responses everyone. I appreciate it. And I also concur about Ampeg's 1970s V-series: some of the best tone available. The only reason I don't have my VT-22 anymore is because it got to much to carry around, but when dialed in right, that thing got the perfect -Brussels era Stones sound. Killer headroom, massive bottom end, and a crunch level that was more akin to a Boeing

QuoteMathijs Richards uses the Les Paul Junior here, sounds fantastic. Taylor's in the fifth position. Mathijs I've been in love with the tone of this 1960 cherry Les Paul Jr ever since I first heard Keith use it on "Gimme Shelter" from Brussles. Spectacular tone in ever way. Dice might get all the limelight, but Keith's original 1960 Jr is my favorite of his Jr/TV

Quotebv Quotehockenheim95 Quotepodiumboy You have to factor in seats behind the stage not being used. U2 played to 97,000 at the Rose Bowl in 2009. They returned there in 2017 and played 2 sold out shows, both at roughly 60,000. The difference is that in 2009 the 369 tour played to the entire stadium, whereas in 2017 they did an endstage show, which is the norm. U2 also played to about 35,0
