QuoteStonedRambler Honestly - for IORR I actually think the 2009 Universal master is the best. Yes it's a bit on Viagra and has less dynamics but doesn't sound as dull and lifeless as other releases. It's probably the only album in the Stones catalogue that I prefer the Universal master. Give it a try.´ +1 IORR was the only instance where the '94 Replica-LP-Cover Vir

Quote71Tele I don't mind all the Some Girls-haters not liking the record, but I find the attempts to intellectualize its quality away rather strained, and even humorous. Spot on. It's such fun to exchange views and discuss a record. But there's also a certain line when the positions are clearly laid out and the discussion enters ego-propping territory. In the end it all boils dow

I guess Kleermaker & Co miss a few points here: Yes, it's true, most parts of "Some Girls" aren't as "deep" and grandiose as records like Sticky Fingers or Exile. Some are lightweight musically, no doubt about that. But the old "Taylor-magic" that is missed so achingly by some, had been gone long before, even with Taylor on board. I guess by IORR you co

QuoteSilver Dagger Glad they saved this song for Tattoo You because it wouldn't have fitted in with Goat's Head Soup. Here though, it's lush, featherbedding tones are perfect for that dreamy second side (on vinyl) of Tattoo You. (...) I politely disagree (mildly;-): it wouldn't have fitted in concerning the vocal part and lyrics. But as these were added only later, it&#

Quotedrewmaster Wasn’t too jazzed about this track when it came out, but since then it’s really grown on me. It has a really cool, groovy vibe to it, thanks in part to the production, with those sultry, Caribbean-esque instrumental touches, and clever lyrics that bounce off each other through a prism of animalistic imagery. Love the sensuous whispery vocals that Jagger inserts here and there, and

I agree with One Hit being repetetive and going nowhere. But Dirty Work, which has a similar feel to it, is a very strong track IMO. And - as DP already pointed out - well produced too. Just goes to show that "80s production" does not necessarily suck all the time...

I have no idea why more stones fans dont love it. It is dirty rolling stones meets robert johnson. Because of what they ignored to put on this disc. That tune the Stones do in their sleep. Well, they also did Satisfaction in their sle

Quotedrewmaster QuoteGreenbluesCome to think of it: Suck On The Jugular sounds a little bit like Mick Jagger workout music ;-) You mean like this? Drew uh...pretty much; I guess ;-) Man, that video... I always thought the workout mistress on the Dirty Work inner sleeve might have been a secret Mick parody.

Although many of these funky efforts like "Sex Drive", "Hot Stuf" or (to a lesser degree) "Hears For Sale" sound pretty derivative, I have a soft spot for most of them, because the Stones do them so well, "Suck On The Jugular" being no exception. "Sex Drive" works really well, IMO - so I'll ad "+1" to Pderman's post, if only pa

QuoteSilver Dagger QuoteGreenblues QuoteSilver Dagger One of the most remarkable and controversial songs in the Stones canon. It’s also one that owes nothing to any musical path that the band had taken before – not blues nor r’n’b or pop or the spangly psychedelia that was the current rage and had informed their previous album. This was bold new ground, the dawning of the rock era and a ver

Nasty...! One of the mean and funky masterpieces on their first masterpiece album. There's no other Stones album with a sound like BB and no other track with a sound quite like this. And who'd have thought they'd borrow the intro sequence from VU's Heroin. Reminds us of why we were attracted to the Stones in the first place.

... the latest one (for quite a long time) - meaning that since Tattoo You we've seen many, many reviews praising the various latest albums as "their best album since Exile On Main Street" or using siminlar terms ;-) Which doesn't mean those albums were bad ones at all, but speaks volumes nevertheless in terms of high expectations.

I was lucky enough to get a ticket for Dusseldorf by chance, when a friend of a friend opted out due to vacation obligations and sold me his. Concerning the show, I watched it with mixed emotions. It was really moving to watch these five (six) survivors simply refusing the signs of age and rock on as if nothing could stop them. But you really could feel it was something of a farewell, which ma

I bought the DVD and watched the documentary yesterday. In terms of content, I found it quite disappointing, because, compared to the many books and features that are already out there, it hardly adds anything of interest, apart from the fresh statement here and there, and some new footage (especially the bonus features). Regarding the plotline, it seems a bit like a revue without a certain Idea

It has the lukewarm voodoo feel of some exotic James Bond movie setting (Live and Let Die comes to mind). Just like these movies it has not much to offer artistically. In this respect Doxa is right IMO. I agree that it borders on parody (maybe that's what it was intended to be, really). That said, it's murky, weary groove is kinda fascinating. It can suck you in like some track

Hey kowalski, great version of @#$%&' Up! He didn't play it in Cologne (I won't complain as we got Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere instead) - but the Vienne setlist every bit as exciting as what he played in Cologne.

Quotecrholmstrom I saw them in Seattle last November. It was pretty wonderful. I'm totally jealous of "Surfer Joe & Moe the Sleaze". Now if we could just get them to play "T-Bone"! I think the Horse takes a lot out of Neil though. Yeah, "Surfer Joe and Moe The Sleaze" was the one I didn't expect. And even more, it was a strong performance. I love it whe

Quotecrholmstrom (...) They played the Joint in Vegas(when it was 1200 capacity) because there was big model train show in town. Problem was, they couldn't fit the set in the venue. So they played 3 hours of pretty much every Crazy Horse song you could want. When they launched into "The Loner", I turned to the hippy girl I was hanging with & said "I almost came". She

Just watched a blistering set by Neil & Crazy Horse. Never heard him that loud. This evening's highlights included opener Love and Only Love, Walk Like Giant, Ramada Inn, a roaring Hey Hey My My and a nice string of encores constisting of Surfer Joe & Moe the Sleaze, Roll Another Number and Everybody Knows this is Nowhere. It was my third Neil Young Show, but the first one where I s

Gonna see them in Cologne in July. And I'm quite excited about it, because I never saw him with Crazy Horse thus far. But the other NY gigs I witnessed ('93 with Booker T & The MGs and '08 with Rick Rosas,Ben Keith, Ralph Molina etc.) were great performances. Hearing all this talk about Crazy Horse pulling all the stops, and watching some video footage of recent shows gets me e

I'll see him in Cologne in July. Just came back from Berlin on Sunday and the weather was quite bad. On Saturday the rain just didn't stop. Hope they didn't get wet at the Waldbühne.
