I agree about the Dylan covers, other than that it's like being in rock 'n' roll church.

I agree with Mathis, the first and foremost thing that affects the sound is the player.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread, great stuff. (Gimme Shelter is a great film, IMHO, and, not just because it's The Stones). It's as much a look at what the 60's music scene here in the states was (really) like as Woodstock is. And, it's the best 'tour' film I've EVER seen.

As I was talking to a friend tonight and he informed me of Keith's mishap I wondered if they might have to cancel some shows, then I thought about the fact that to my knowldge they have never canceled a performance in their careers, is that correct?

CCR were a wonderful band, "It Came Out Of The Sky" (is that a Chuck Berry tune?) was a great song (among other CCR songs) a band I was in as a kid played. I saw them live when I was 14, ('68') first concert I was allowed to go to without parental oversight. I don't really remember much about the concert, (I was not high!), except that they used 'Kustom' Amplifi

Keiths coolest scarf was the old Moroccan prayer rug. (I think that's what it was anyway. He started wearing it back in 69-70? somewhere in there.)

richter informed me: Rank outsider "there is more to the stones than keith, so what he does or doesnt not play does not tell everything on chord structures of stones songs, ronnie playes chords, keybord plays chords, even the horns can play cord notes, the backupsigners can sing in chords. so it is the overall chordical sound that we are discussing" Ya, I undersatnd that rict

I think Keiths playing is still very solid and still carries the sound of the band live, (no, it's not what it once was but it's still very solid) without it they couldn't tour at all. And I agree with the assessment that if Mick wanted Ronnie out he'd have been gone long ago. (I was gonna say that about the third post into this thread but didn't). Ronnie has some VERY lo

I watched the Rio video for the first time last night and I don't see how the other Stones put up with Ronnies solo's these days. I think they need to hire a guitar tutor for Ronnie and make him practice 1-2 hours evey day until he shapes up. I think his playing is a REAL detriment to the band at the moment. The rest of the band seems to be hitting on all cylinders, but , not Ronnie.

I like it 'very' lean, just some nice natural distortion/overdrive. I only own one pedal, (Visual Sound, Jekyll & Hyde) and I seldom use it. I hate pedals!

Thanks Tom. I was listening to some Bo Diddley last night and it sounded like the 'whole' studio was soaked with either echo, or, delay. (Who says rock 'n' roll is dead? Not with the people on this website it ain't).

A b-bender is a specially made Tele that bends when you hit notes on the B string (kidding). Actually it's quite the amazing thing. I've only played one once, not enough to get good at using it. Somehow the guitar strape is hooked up to something so that when you push/pull down on the guitar it creates a 'whammy' effect on the B string, or, the B and G strings? (can't rem

I've enjoyed listening to the whole thing again too, (although the "where the girls all go" part in 'WTBG' is a little hard on me, lol) it's a fun recording. (It's been 20 some years probably since I've listened to it). Thanks open-g for the slap-back info, I'll try and work that out, I've got a box in mind. Do you use compression when you p

Hey Tom, I know you told me once before,..but is 'slap-back' done with echo? And if so can you get something close with delay and reverb? One more thing,..the more I listen to the tune the more it sounds like P-90's (most likely the bridge pick-up) What do you think?

Ok, how do you create 'slap-back? (I would LOVE to hear this live!) What kind of guitar is he using? Sounds like a Gibson? Not sure., at least it sounds like humbuckers? Could be P-90's I guess, lol.

God, what a great tune! I had completly forgotten about! Man that guitar sound is just awsome, how in the hell does Keith get that sound? Is it tons of reverb or delay? (Man, if this song doesn't make you wanna drop your panties and shake what you got I'm not sure there's any rock 'n' roll in your blood

Sounds like D Major to me too, in fact Keith isn't even playing the whole E-minor chord during the chorus. Best I can hear at this point is that he's playing two notes from the E minor (E and G 3rd and forth strings) right before a suspended and then Major D using only two strings from that whole chord (1st and 2nd). He does the same thing over the G using the sixth and 4th strings. It&

Is there a 'B-bender' on this tune or is that Ronnie playing lap steel? Some friends of mine played it last night and they just did it with straight tuning etc,... So that got me thinking. I haven't actually heard the studio version in a long time and don't own it.

'Mona' has always been one of my favorite Stones cover songs, still is. It's hard for me to imagine rock 'n' roll without Bo's contribution. Bo is (rock 'n' roll) a giant. Rock on Bo! And he writes in several styles, not just one.
