I said that I consider The Hollies "lesser" and probably should have used another paragraph for the sentence "For that matter, what about...". It would have read better. Yes, I consider these other groups to be part of my second tier of favorites. The album, 'Surrealistic Pillow' is a great album, but I happen to like 'Pepper' better. That's ju

Interesting to think about the Bee Gees. I always thought their 60s lyrics were a bit obscure, pretentious and precious (not in a real negative way either). Liked the albums, especially the more accessible hits. Placed them in my second tier of favorites, though. What about The Hollies? A lesser group coming up with some decent stuff? For that matter, what about Cream, Jefferson Airplane

Yes, I like what Edward Twining wrote myself. The thing for me is that I can find plenty of examples of recordings made within the time frame of the mid to late 60s that compare (and contrast) well with each other. The Beatles may be the most popular 60s band ever (even today), but there certainly were other artists who were making records that might be considered better than this or that B

I'll agree to disagree as I feel the opposite even with my love of The Beach Boys. The Beatles have always done more for me than The Beach Boys, but again, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, Elton John, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Dylan, The Who, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, and Zappa are pretty much my top ten, anyway.

isbz, Beginning a project by either being inspired to create something "as good" or "equal" or "to top" is not necessarily a bad place to begin. I'm not talking about copying. I don't think 'Pet Sounds' is more relevant than 'Pepper' because of some thematic reason overshadowing another. If you agree that loneliness seems to be

The trouble with George Martin or anyone involved with 'Pepper' making such a statement is that it is too general and doesn't clearly define the result. Yes, The Beatles were inlfuenced and would try to top what came before. Yes, 'Pet Sounds' had a great effect on a lot of English artists, as did Zappa, Pink floyd, etc. The end result though is that trying to equal

Okay, this is just my opinion, not something written in concrete fact. I like both these albums. I see influences on both of them form various artists and genres. I don't think 'Pet Sounds' was the overall influence of music post 1966. That gives it too much credit. I believe it's one of the finest albums ever released. My favorite Beatles albums are 'Rubber S

The Rolling Stones US web store currently only has the announcement. This implies that the country of origin for manufacture may be the UK or the EU and the USA will import product for distribution. I wonder if this will show up on any of the various amazon's. The Englsh store's price converts to approxmately 302.11 USD with shipping included at the current conversion rate.

Not that it matters much to those who only want the recordings, this package comes with some nice extras. Second, the product description mentions "hidden gems". Hopefully, that means hidden bonus tracks, which might be (I'm not holding my breath) some or all of the "missing" tracks being mentioned in this thread. Or maybe a "hidden gem" is a replica o

Actually, the most under-rated album ever is "Genuine Imitation Life Gazette" by The 4 Seasons, but that's another thread. 'Exile' has been hailed as under-rated so much, it's become the most over-rated under-rated album ever, unless 'Pet Sounds' (Beach Boys, as if you didn't know) tops it in that category. 'Exile' is a great album. I

Mick Jagger was NOT a London School of Economics graduate. He dropped out. This is not to denigrate his acceptance at the school nor his intelligence. He's one smart cookie. It is extremely difficult to get into this school. This is a prestigious school; lots of people are rejected. So, he must have done really well to get in. He was granted a government grant to pay for the cos

Of course albums grow on you, that's part of the experience. Something that might not be relevant to you musically or emotionally today might sneak up and get to you in a couple of years. It's great when something gets to you the first time you experience it, but there is much value when your appreciation comes about due to your own growth and experiences.
