I think of Some Girls as the last great creative gasp. Although not without interest and even a degree of innovation (especially Undercover and Continental Drift), nothing The Stones did after Some Girls has come close to the consistency and sense of purpose they brought to Some Girls. And yes, I know, Tattoo You is regularly praised as their 'last great album', and it is that

You tell him Tele! I always thought a sense of humour was a pre-requisite for being a Stones fan, from Emotional Rescue onwards. Anyway, back to the track per track review ... 1). Miss You - the album's first highlight; a clever fusion of The Stones sound with then then vogueish four to the floor beat. A deserved hit. 5/5 2). When The Whip Comes Down - lyrically a Lou Reed

Quotestones77 QuoteNikolai Quotestones77 first Stones record I heard in entirety was Goats Head Soup in 73, but it didn't really resonate then as I was only 13.. but now at 50 it still stands for some reason as a favorite Stones record of mine next I heard Love You Live at 16 or thereabouts and it really did register and I love it, no matter how sloppy the playing or indecipherable Jagger

QuoteChris Fountain Quotemarchbaby QuoteNikolai It's also Exile On Main Street's older, sleazier, wealthier cousin. LIke your quote! Weathier perhaps, but sleazier than Exile? Gotta consider that one! Nikolai is correct. Case in point - Far away eyes would fit nicely on EOMS. Of course, unnecessary. A fair old point Chris, but I don't think it would. Faraway Eye

Quotebolexman Good summary Nikolai. I have always really liked the album, it is interesting to hear the influence of living in New York, and like you say, their wealth. In different places on the album they sound like they are making great art, are being honest, mostly mastering the trends of the day, occasionally following trends in a boring and empty exercise. I love: When The Whip Comes D

Some Girls was not only the first Stones album I ever bought, but also the first album I ever bought. I think I got it the week it came out, if not the actual day. I still have, with its uncensored sleeve. I've since managed to collect more vinyl pressings and CD variants of it than is healthy, but what the hell? Some Girls may not be The Stones greatest album, but it is, I think,

Megaupload had servers in the US, so they were easy to hit. Rapidshare are based in Germany, where copyright laws are different - I believe. I think the next site to get hit will be Filesonic. Also Us based.

They made an example of Megaupload, by taking out one of the two biggest filesharers on the net. The other is Rapidshare. I suspect they'll be getting a knock on the door any time soon.

Inevitable. It got too high profile. The owner was flaunting it. And the high-profile celeb campaign pretty much drew a big fat target on its back. Expect the other well-known ones to be taken out this year too.

QuoteSilver Dagger BBC TV tonight showed a clip and incredible clip of David Bowie and The Spiders From Mars playing The Jean Genie, totally live on Tops Of The Pops in 1973. It was first aired in Jan 1974. There's a one minute clip here. Now, if only they could find that 1968 NME Pollwinners film! Great post, Dagger. Thanks.

QuoteGravityBoy I like the story concept in this vastly underrated album: It's atmospheric, weird and wonderful. Bowie and Eno... magic. But my favourite (today anyway), is Heroes. They all nearly all great though. Outside is one of my Top 5 Bowie albums. It's an incredible record. I saw the UK leg of the tour at Wembley Arena three times, and it was superb.

Nice review Mr Dagger. I don't think the Quadrophenia CDs sound different to the 1996 remaster. A little EQ has been applied here and there, but that's it. Shame they couldn't release the remaster of the original mix, which was used for the AMAZING Classic Records 200g vinyl reissue. If you want to hear the best ever version of Quadrophenia to date, that's the version

QuoteManuelStones Let's do a mental exercise Had Marquez been declared the winner, would it have been so much controversy? I think Pacquiao would have been the first to raise Juan Manuel's hand. I think there would have been as much controversy, because it was a very close fight. But you're right - Pacman would've accepted the decision and called for (and been granted

QuoteNo Expectations Have to disagree. It was a close fight but Pacquiao won I've watched it again, twice. I think Marquez was definitely the better fighter, but his trainer told him he was winning and he took his foot off the gas in the last four rounds, when he should have been applying pressure. Pacman - and Freddie Roach - knew he was losing it. Pacman kept crossing himself be

QuoteManuelStones Arum didn't want his biggest payday ever (Pacman-Floyd) to go down the drain. Sad. That's exactly it. Marquez has always had Pacman's number. And I felt he won last night. He dominated all but the last four rounds. On the strength of Pacman's performance yesterday, I think Mayweather will beat him with ease. His fight with Marquez was so one-sided

Quotekowalski Being a fan of Mr. Lou Reed music, I find this album one of his best in years. It's straightforward and very emotional unlike his recent previous works. Obviously him and Metallica's had something to share. I also like their performance at Jools Holland TV show. You can see Lou feels very concerned by his music, which hasn't always been the case the past years.

Quotewhitem8 Whew! That is so sad. Love Lou, but man did he look and sound bad on Jools. White Light especially, seems like he didn't even remember it... Hey Whitey! How you doing man? Long time. Anyway, Lou ... Terrible on Jools. I saw him in London on his most recent tour and he sounded utterly f-ing dreadful. He also looked dreadful too, with a belly the size of a basketball.

Quotetatters Gilmour doesn't seem eager to do much of anything. He's always been lazy. What has he done in the last 17 years? One album, and one very short tour. I think he played 12 shows. That's absolutely true. Three studio albums in 24 years says it all.

QuoteThe Sicilian Recently, I have heard stories about ongoing feuds with various musicians in bands that had me thinking, why are so many British bands destined to have nasty or even amiable breakups? When you stop and really think about it, some of the best rock music bands in history, many originating in England, windup disintegrating over money, women, and ego squabbles. Even the death o

Quoteab Just guessing, but maybe they'll deliberately avoid replacing him with one man and take the Miami Horns on the road with them from here on. Assuming the Stones are done with large-scale touring, Bobby Keyes could be a good fit: big lungs, pedigree, etc. But he's almost 68, and there might be issues between him and Bruce if substance abuse is still a problem for him. QuoteFather Ted According to British banker Joanathan Davis, all the global banks are insolvent. Interestingly, he said that the UK did not recover from the 1929 crash until 1954. That's because of the Second World War. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the UK didn't recover from both the 1929 crash and paying for WW2 until the late 80s. We were so broke in the late 1970
