Good question! From my experience only, 1) Because communication with video is much different than with only sound (e.g. facial expressions, smiles, etc all matter); in short, it’s just easier to laugh when you can see someone else smiling back, and 2) we’re really good and funny at what we do! BV, you have to remember that the George Floyd protests significantly altered the downtown MPLS landscape. Many restaurants and retailers chose not to return to downtown. That explains the boringness you mentioned. Uptown was hit hard too. Check out Northeast MPLS for some great restaurants and breweries.
