I love Audacity! The problem may not even be the tape source (a tape source is not lossy for any program), the problem surely is that Radio Broadcast, and Radio Recordings (and also TV broadcasts and TV recordings) do have A LOT of high frequencies cut. The subject of compressing audio for TV and Radio (high frequencies et all) is very well known.

Altough it does not work 100%, a fast check for loussy sources is the final Hz in Audacity: -> around/over 20000 it's usually lossless -> around 14000 to 18000 it's loussy.
