Quotekowalski Most likely it was recorded in 24 bits/48kHz. That's how are recorded most albums nowadays. But even if it was recorded on a 24/96 format, a resampled file at 16bits/44.1kHz will still sound better than a compressed file at 256kbps (like the iTunes files). There is a loss of information when the 24 bit source is reduced to 16, so the CD is a lossy format, but nobody cares a

The audio engineer would have recorded the Hyde Park shows in 24/96 or even 24/192. The 16/44.1 "lossless" files like on CDs are a lossy copy of the source. The Mastered For iTunes AAC files mastered from the same source are more efficiently compressed. People can't hear the difference. We don't know the process followed to create the mp3's on Stones Archive. Quite

Quotekowalski If you mean burning iTunes tracks on a CD, that's right there will be no There will be a difference if the source for the CD is lossless (flac, alac, wav. When an iTunes AAC track and CD is mastered from the same 24/96 master, I don't believe there's any audible difference. I've never seen any evidence utilising the scientific method that says otherwise. In

Sorry folks, if it's encoded 16bit 44.1 kHz, it's not lossless. That's just the early 1980's version of compressed digital audio.

The fossils here need to understand that they can't hear a difference between music purchased from iTunes Music Store and a CD from the same source. Here's my answer in advance for each reply claiming they can - it's an irrationality in your head, not your ears.

Absolutely, the record companies can't be making money selling back catalogue titles. Get some more product out there in 2013, Stones.

Does anyone think the Stones Archive 'official bootleg' releases will continue in 2013? They originally said there would be six, or was it six exclusive to the goggle store? I've enjoyed them all, but would love some more - 69, 72 etc. C'mon Give us some more!

I believe that the Stonesarchive.com 'official bootleg' program will continue, but if it doesn't, no NY or Philly 1972 gig is a gaping hole. Would love to hear the show after Dick Cavett. It's not possible to plan the release of '81 and '82 shows and not '72 and '73. It will be a long and interesting wait for the next one. Hope they come to iTunes too.

This is all great, but what matters is whether iTunes and other clones of that business model can offer a digital format that reproduces the desirable aspects of vinyl. If there's no business case for it, we're stuck with loud recent CD quality.
