This is a very good recording of a very good show, I can only advise you to grab it; thanks Urban Steel!

Yes, unless you really only enjoy pristine recordings, don't be put off by the comment that it's "good audience," which is sometimes barely listenable. This is VG to VG+ (in places) and, especially after the first song or so, is an enjoyable listen, especially given the performance.

Thanks Urban for this treasure. I agree with Texas fan that this is VG to VG+ quality. Definitely one of the better audience recordings I've heard from the 72 tour.

I agree with all. This recording has alot of problems quality wise but the sheer
force of the performance overpowers you! The Stones are definately red hot and blue on this one!

Are we speaking of the same recording here? This is one of the top three audience recordings from the '72 tour. It's not great by modern standards, but certainly good, and in the context of the rest of the audience recordings from this tour, it's among the very best.

Well I wouldnt put it in the top 3(quality wise) but the point I'm trying to make is the peformance is so great it surpasses better recordings for listening pleasure. Quality wise both Ft worth shows,Charlotte and Mobile come to mind as being better recordings but it is better than alot of Aud tapes. The 72 tour for some reason seems to be one of the most poorly represented tours as far as aud tapes go.I have an Akron Ohio 72 tape thats better recorded but the performance cant compete with the DC concert at all!!

Oh we really disagree on this one, but it's cool. It's just a matter of opinion. Charlotte of course is the best audience recording from the tour. Mobile is one of the best as well, as is the LP sourced recording of Norfolk. I don't think either Ft. Worth recording is as good as the D.C. recording, at least not to my ears. Akron is not as good as D.C. either, but I gotta disagree about the performance. I think Akron is one of the best performances of the tour, probably better than the D.C. performance. But that's my opinion.

I do agree that the '72 tour is poorly represented as far as audience recordings go. The audience recordings from the '73 Winter tour are much better on average than the '72 recordings.

Well, we DO agree its one helluva show so thats the main thing! Maybe our recordings of Akron are different, I did get it from a pretty longtime trader. Its about on par with "Freezers" Mobile recording.

Hey scottkeef, since you mentioned it. The last time Akron was put up at The Den, someone mentioned that he taped this show. He lost his recording long time ago. It reportedly was a mono recording, it had a cut during the power failure, and according to him it was better than any other version.

Could you please 'describe' your recording, scottkeef? Is there a cut in MR? Is someone shouting 'paint it black you devil' in between songs[MR and BBJ, I seem to recall]?

Jack Daniels On Tour is in my top 3, for STP 1972 audience recordings.....and it's a helluva performance as well
The other 2 are....Charlotte and Norfolk (vinyl source).

Sohoe, thats the one. Both things you mentioned are in it. Its been so long since I listened to it(that happens alot to me as many as I've collected!) that I may have to agree with Tumblin-it may not be as good as DC. Its a very noisy and rowdy crowd around the taper but the recording is clear. I guess it is mono as its a bit high on the trebly side but the bass boost takes care of that. This discussion has got me back in the mood for listening to some 72 shows again!!

ps Hi, Erik! Also I will say VGP greatly improved the sound of this from the first cd release I heard of it.

Hi Scott - yeah this is one of VGP's best releases; it's the best version around for this important show. I bought it when it was new....before getting into trades or torrents; and I was astonished - when comparing to my tape of Washington 72.

This is the upgraded version, correct? My upgraded version goes all clicky during Rocks Off & Gimme Shelter & I'm searching for the best version of the this boot extant.
