New Altamont? And A Vinyl Question
Posted by: scottkeef ()

I just saw advertised a 2cd Altamont set on TAKRL thats claims to be a"stage" recording from a new source. Anyone heard of this? There have been rumours for years of a complete sb from the film. Also whats with all the Vinyl releases on Empress Valley and others lately? If we can conclude that they are using the digital sources, it it a true analog product? I'm just not clear on that!!

I don't have that TARKL (!) release (they are not even able to spell the old vinyl label TAKRL correctly!). But I'm pretty sure it's just a copy of the VGP.

Haven't heard it myself, either, but I've seen it mentioned (2 places) that it's the standard audience recordings - and also that Idol Mind Prod wouldn't release it under their own name...so they went for the TARKL pseudonym. Obviously it wasn't up-to-par with IMPs standards. You might remember that IMP planned on putting out both "Beggars Banquet outtakes", and "Altamont 69".
Didn't know that Empress Valley had started releasing RS bootlegs on vinyls. Which titles are out, Scott ?

Dogs&Cats released that source - from a somewhat high gen tape. It doesn't sound very good....and it's incomplete.

Without saying where I found it(since we've been told not to) the Altamont says its"from a new source, clearer than aud. but not quite board".
Erik, some of the Empress titles aregrinning smileyOUBLE DOOR 2LP(79.99),BUTT NAKED STRIPPED PLUS BONUS 2LP(180 gm splash gatefold-109.99),GET BACK TO THE ONE YOU LOVE-61-64 studio and Kilda 66,KEY TO THE HIGHWAY 10" EP Outs. Also the SHINE A LIGHT 2LP, Wizardo records BERLIN 1970, 1975 TOUR OF AMERICAS(Moonstone Records),LIVE LICKS(Katno records 2LP), FORTY LICKS 3 LP BOX SET, and NECROPHELIA 1 LP(Sterling Sounds label) REPRO TRIFOLD. Prices are kind high! But what I was wondering about the later material is if they sourced it from a digital cd medium is it still a true "analog" sound on your turntable? There was a thread earlier about the SHINE A LIGHT(RSR LABEL FAKE)LP-it showed up on EBAY-and someone said it sounded good but there were gaps between the songs!(I dont know if they were makeing a pun or not).

I got that same update Scottkeef...yeah, the prices are high on the vinyl. I've seen them listed a little cheaper and I'm going to Japan at the end of October so I'm gonna see what they go for over there.

Let me know what you find out AND if you can find a MONO Beggars Banquet(I dont even care what format its in!) Speaking of Beggars Banquet I saw a Stereo Reel to Reel of it on Ebay. the last update I got the bid was at twenty something dollars!

Thanks Scott - seen those vinyls for sale, but didn't know it was "Empress Valley"...if it really is authentic.
I don't believe for a second that they contain analog sound...who'll find low-gen tapes for this stuff...? Think they just want to earn some dollars...as the big covers are collectible for some.
...which reminds me; there are vinyls out for the "ABB early mixes"...and it means that MP3s has been released on vinyl; ha ha - that's a laugh

All those new vinyl boots are European releases and not Japanese. Also the label is not Empress Valley but Empress Vinyl.

I have heard the French broadcast version of Atamont selections.

1) there is an announcer's voice over the beginning of each song, as is/was the apparent and annoying habit of the French

2) it is not the complete concert, just a selection of songs

3) the sound quality is low gen/mediocre

4) the interesting thing is that the source is obviously a soundboard. instruments are quite clear and properly mixed. also, the versions on the tape are complete songs and not the edited versions found in the film "Gimme Shelter"

Whilst the Dead pulled out of Altamont there are rumours that Bear their soundman at the time recorded the Stones' set from the sbd.

With regard to the TARKL Altamont, and assuming that it's the 2cd set released at the start of this year. It's definitely not a soundboard but is a stereo version of the same tape that was sourced for the VGP double CD that came out some years ago.

It's therefore an audience tape, might be from the taper that appears in the Altamont sequences of Gimme Shelter (the movie) and also several of Ethan Russell's photos from that night.

The taper evidently didn't allow any run-in on his tape before commencing the recording so there is distinct distortion on the opening seconds of "Jumpin Jack Flash" whilst the taper can be heard negotiating his way to the front of the audience.

Two critical differences betwen this tape and the VGP source are:

1). The tape is in stereo

2). "Midnight Rambler" include the complete intro unlike the VGP version which clips the intro.

THe soundboard tape will either come into circulation in another fifty years or so or will end up in a black bin liner consigned to some cosmic spacefill - landfills will of course be a thing of a regretably carbonated past.

Either way the sad sacks (I'm including myself here) that would still be even moderately interested in listening to this stuff will be past caring as will Mick, Keef and Co. although I suspect if some of the more regular posters to this board had their way the Stones when the inevitable occurs would be embalmed with plasticisers and cyrogenically animated to perform "Brown Sugar" and the rest of their back catalogue (nothing too recent mind) until Hell itself froze over.

You're right Riccardo about the Empress Vinyl-just not looking close enough but the "But Nacked" LP is listed as Empress Valley Supreme.

"Bob and Betty" of Grateful Dead fame are indeed the audio engineers from Altamont and they are acknowledged as such in the end credits of the "Gimme Shelter" movie....

"Whilst the Dead pulled out of Altamont there are rumours that Bear their soundman at the time recorded the Stones' set from the sbd."

Yeah there are aldo rumors that the Stones recorded the Stones' set from the sbd for the movie GS...

I have read that Bear (from the Dead) was on the soundboard that day, there's also credits at the end of the GS movie about a 10 track (could be 12) soundboard recording by the Stones (A. Johns?)...i think there's no doubt a complete soundboard recording exists as they must have for the film (which you have with SFTD, SFM, UMT & GS).
Incidently GS can be heard in complete soundboard on "Shot of Salvation" bootleg.

So I assume this source mentioned above is from the same as what "Mikey" reports?
Anyone confirm?

Thanks

Most of the info. is related on the commentary tracks for the GS Criterion DVD.

Bob and Betty did the recording, which was mightily flawed due to the temperatures and lack of proper generator/power supply. This required it to be heavily worked on in order for it to stay in correct pitch/sync etc.

Rumor has it that Bob & Betty were looking to sell the SB master some years ago. Good luck raising the 5 or 6 figure asking price.

Allen Klein would probably have his lawyers find away to take it from you though
