Late in January, JEMS lost a second founding member, the great Stan Gutoski.
Stan recorded hundreds of shows in and around the Seattle area starting in 1972 and kept taping over five decades.
He was famous for recording shows on a Tandberg full-track mono reel to reel, and his masters of Led Zeppelin,
Bruce Springsteen, The Who, David Bowie, CSNY and Joni Mitchell are some of the best '70s recordings of those artists.

What is less widely known about Stan is that he was equally committed to recording radio broadcasts on his home reel to reel which was a Revox B77.
If any local Seattle station was broadcasting a live concert or carrying a syndicated concert series, Stan fired up the recorder,
sometimes going to sleep with an alarm to wake him up to flip the tape (his job in the postal service required him to report to work very early).
He also set up a timer system to record broadcasts when he couldn't be there to start the deck.

JOE'S MEMORIES:
When tickets for the 1972 tour went on sale, they were only available through a mail order lottery. There was an order form published in the newspaper,
which had to be filled out and mailed in, indicating the date of the show you wanted, your choice of ticket prices ($5.50, $6.50, or $7.50),
and how many tickets you wanted (there was a limit of four) and a Money Order payment, with a self addressed, stamped envelope.
Then you waited. If they chose your envelope, you got tickets. If the show sold out, you got your envelope back, marked "Return To Sender".
I was lucky enough to get tickets for both the July 18th and July 19th shows at Boston Garden. I sold the tickets for the 19th to a coworker,
who was unable to get tickets for himself, and after the experience of the show on the 18th, I'm glad I did, because I don't think I would have
had enough energy to get back to Boston for the second show. July 18th was a hot, humid day and the Boston Garden was a brick and concrete arena
that was built in 1928 and, as many times as I went there, I don't remember ever feeling any air conditioning in the summer months,
so as we got to our seats and waited for the show to start, we found ourselves shrouded in a haze of hot, humid air and cigarette smoke.
The concert started on time, with Stevie Wonder and his band doing an energetic, one hour opening set. After Stevie left the stage,
we expected to have a short intermission, while the road crew finished setting up the Stones' equipment. Twenty minutes went by, then thirty,
then forty five minutes came and went. Finally, Chip Monck (the voice of Woodstock), who was introducing the acts, came out and let us know that,
due to heavy fog at Logan Airport, the Stones' plane, flying from Montreal to Boston, had to be diverted to T.F. Green Airport, in Warwick, Rhode Island
and they would have to be brought to the show by limousine, which should have taken about 45 minutes. Unfortunately, while at the airport in Warwick,
a photographer who had been annoying Mick and Keith, while they were trying to get to their rides, ended up getting a few punches from them and they
were arrested and taken into custody. We were unaware of all this, until Chip came back out to explain the situation, after another half hour, or so,
had gone by. Meanwhile, since it was the early 70s and race relations in Boston weren't going to well, a riot and some fires had broken out in the
Roxbury section of town. Boston's Mayor, Kevin White, hoping to keep from having to deal with more unrest at the Garden, put in a call to the Warwick Police
Department and arranged to get Mick and Keith released, so they would be able to get to the show and not have 15,000 disappointed and angry Rolling Stones
fans adding to more problems in the streets. Chip came back on stage and introduced the Mayor to the restless crowd. Mayor White said that Mick and Keith
were on their way to the show, but that "my city is in flames". He explained to the audience that he had to remove the police officers,
who were there for security at the show, so he could send them to help out with the situation in Roxbury. He asked the crowd to be calm and keep
the situation controlled after the officers left and that he knew that everything would turn out well at the show. Stevie's set had ended at 9:00 p.m.
and, at this point, it was close to midnight. Things stayed calm and relaxed for a while longer, then, at about 12:15 a.m., on July 19th,
Chip came on stage to announce that Mick and Keith were there and the show would start shortly. After he gave some instructions about taking flash photos,
only during the first song, we finally heard those famous words, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones" and the longest wait of my concert
going experience was over. The opening notes of "Brown Sugar" rang out and the crowd came back to life, clapping along with the music.
They did the 14 song, 70 minute set that we had read about, but as a "thank you" for the wait that we had endured, they did one of the few encores
of the tour and came back to do "Honky Tonk Women". The Stones finally left the stage at about 2:00 a.m., but our evening wasn't over, yet!
After going through the exhausting experience of this show, we still had to make the 2 hour,100 mile return home.
By that time, the roads were pretty quiet , so everything turned out well and we got back home at about 4:30 a.m.,
tired but glad we had been there. Over the years, stories have surfaced that say Stevie played a second set that night,
to fill the time while we waited for the Stones to arrive and there's another version of the story that appears on page 267 of the 1974 book
"S.T.P. A Journey Through America with the Rolling Stones" by Robert Greenfield, that says that Stevie did a two hour opening set,
with an encore, and was asked to play another 20 - 30 minutes. None of this is true! They're both "Urban Myths" that had to be created by someone who,
either wasn't actually there, or had taken too many "treats" from the pill jar. Stevie and the band played for an hour,
then we sat and waited for three and a half hours, until the Stones hit the stage at 12:30 a.m. And That's the way it was!
The only "down side" of the show was when I discovered that, due to the fact that I had recorded some of the announcements from the stage while
we waited for Mick and Keith, I didn't see that the tape had run out early in "You Can't Always Get What You Want",
so I didn't flip the tape until just before the song ended. and we didn't get to see the "Satisfaction/Uptight"
medley that the Stones did with Stevie and his band as an encore at some of tour stops,
but for $7.50 a ticket, we got more than our money's worth at this one!

had gone by. Meanwhile, since it was the early 70s and race relations in Boston weren't going to well, a riot and some fires had broken out in the
Roxbury section of town. Boston's Mayor, Kevin White, hoping to keep from having to deal with more unrest at the Garden, put in a call to the Warwick Police
Department and arranged to get Mick and Keith released, so they would be able to get to the show and not have 15,000 disappointed and angry Rolling Stones
fans adding to more problems in the streets. Chip came back on stage and introduced the Mayor to the restless crowd. Mayor White said that Mick and Keith
were on their way to the show, but that "my city is in flames". He explained to the audience that he had to remove the police officers,
who were there for security at the show, so he could send them to help out with the situation in Roxbury. He asked the crowd to be calm and keep
the situation controlled after the officers left and that he knew that everything would turn out well at the show. Stevie's set had ended at 9:00 p.m.
and, at this point, it was close to midnight. Things stayed calm and relaxed for a while longer, then, at about 12:15 a.m., on July 19th,
Chip came on stage to announce that Mick and Keith were there and the show would start shortly. After he gave some instructions about taking flash photos,
only during the first song, we finally heard those famous words, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones" and the longest wait of my concert
going experience was over. The opening notes of "Brown Sugar" rang out and the crowd came back to life, clapping along with the music.
They did the 14 song, 70 minute set that we had read about, but as a "thank you" for the wait that we had endured, they did one of the few encores
of the tour and came back to do "Honky Tonk Women". The Stones finally left the stage at about 2:00 a.m., but our evening wasn't over, yet!
After going through the exhausting experience of this show, we still had to make the 2 hour,100 mile return home.
By that time, the roads were pretty quiet , so everything turned out well and we got back home at about 4:30 a.m.,
tired but glad we had been there. Over the years, stories have surfaced that say Stevie played a second set that night,
to fill the time while we waited for the Stones to arrive and there's another version of the story that appears on page 267 of the 1974 book
"S.T.P. A Journey Through America with the Rolling Stones" by Robert Greenfield, that says that Stevie did a two hour opening set,
with an encore, and was asked to play another 20 - 30 minutes. None of this is true! They're both "Urban Myths" that had to be created by someone who,
either wasn't actually there, or had taken too many "treats" from the pill jar. Stevie and the band played for an hour,
then we sat and waited for three and a half hours, until the Stones hit the stage at 12:30 a.m. And That's the way it was!
The only "down side" of the show was when I discovered that, due to the fact that I had recorded some of the announcements from the stage while
we waited for Mick and Keith, I didn't see that the tape had run out early in "You Can't Always Get What You Want",
so I didn't flip the tape until just before the song ended. and we didn't get to see the "Satisfaction/Uptight"
medley that the Stones did with Stevie and his band as an encore at some of tour stops,
but for $7.50 a ticket, we got more than our money's worth at this one!
