Notes:
I'm by no means a great taper in an arena setting - if you've heard any of my other recordings you'll know my comfort zone is approximately 1,000-person clubs. That being said, I went into the Barclays Center last night wondering if I'd walk out with a recording that was even listenable. All things considered, I don't think this turned out TOO bad.

I faced my share of problems in taping this though. I hadn't accounted for people standing up, sitting down, etc, and when the people around me did, my sound changed pretty drastically. The sound was the best when everyone around me was sitting (For reference, that would be from about Wild Horses through It's Only Rock N' Roll) - I've heavily EQ-ed the rest of the show to match this sound as closely as I could. I did as best a job on it as I could, if someone thinks they can do better please feel free to go back to square one an remaster it!

Additionally, I was surrounded by plenty of loud people. On the recording it's far from being a constant, but you can overhear people around me talking here and there, some singing/clapping and a couple quite loud screams. The upper bowl in the Barclays Center has the rows so close together, and a lot of the crowd noise is actually from the people behind me! I had one guy behind me singing more and more progressively throughout the show, doesn't start to get too noticeable until about Midnight Rambler. I also had a number of people in my row going in and out for beer (I'm personally disgusted that people spending $300 on a ticket would miss 15 or more minutes of a 2 hour show just to get a beer), so there are a couple minor phasing spots. The one very bad spot is in The Last Time - I had a heavy-set drunk trying to squeeze out of the aisle that had the urge to talk to every person as he passed them, including me. There's about 30 seconds of the song that are taken up by him talking to the woman next to me and peaking my mics out as he rubbed against me while shimmying out - I'm really sorry about how terrible that little section is.

I went to this show as a fan first and foremost - taping was secondary. I chose to record it at fear that no one else would as most tapers seem unwilling to pay the Stones' obscene ticket prices this time around. I hope despite it not being a perfect recording you're able to enjoy it"

I had to make a choice regarding whether I synched the audio with the actual stage performance - or with the big screen - because they were way out of synch with each other (off by roughly 1/5 of a second). I chose to synch the audio to the performers on the stage.

A huge thanks to Markbot and Vandiego Dave for recording this show! They spent thousands of dollars to go to the show and instead of enjoying it to the fullest - they quietly made sure they captured it for everyone to enjoy.

Comments:

For those who don't recall, on the Stones' "40 Licks" tour in 2002-03 they took the unique approach of playing multiple venues of varying sizes in selected cities. The largest cities in each country would typically get performances in a stadium (where they would play their greatest-hits set), an arena (which would feature primarily "hits" with a handful of deep tracks), and a club or small theater. The latter were the most fun of the tour, because the Stones essentially picked a setlist to entertain themselves -- these shows often featured guests and unique performances of rarely-played songs.

My favorites of the 2002-03 club shows were Stockholm and Chicago; and the nod may go to the latter. This show has a great setlist, first-ever performances of songs, special guests, and an inspired performance. If you are a Stones fan and don't have this recording, this is a must-have.

There are at least 2 other common sources of this show, but I like this one best. A friend recorded this with CSB mikes about 25 feet back on the right side, and the sound was perfect. The crowd noise is minimal (except when Bono came onstage unexpectedly).

One wart: After EQ'ing, breaking tracks, burning it, and deleting the originals, I found one spot of brief diginoise -- during the break between "Start Me Up" and "Live With Me" (tracks 2 and 3 on disc 1). Since there weren't any other problems and the diginoise didn't interfere with anything, I left it alone.

I have posted this a couple times on Dime, most recently in 2007. It's such a memorable show that I thought it would be worth seeding again for those that don't have it"

(could it be a tape that was not bootlegged by any label?)

>>>A very nice audience recording from the Stones' Exile on Main Street tour. This version was reseeded by jagger56 on Dime on February 26, 2012, and was removed from the tracker on January 12, 2014 after being snatched 378 times. Sorry I don't recall the names of those originally responsible for sharing this; many thanks to them.

this torrent differs from the torrent available here: [www.dimeadozen.org]

This torrent is the complete show (except for the incomplete "Bitch") from a tape source; that torrent is incomplete, and is taken from a vinyl rip of the "Bring it Back Alive" LP by Idol Mind Productions

02 Rocks Off
03 Gimme Shelter
04 Happy
05 Tumbling Dice
06 Love in Vain
07 Sweet Virginia
08 You Can't Always Get What You Want
09 All Down the Line
10 tape flip gap
11 Midnight Rambler (in progress)
12 band intros, Bye Bye Johnny
13 Rip This Joint
14 Jumping Jack Flash
15 Street Fighting Man

master stereo audience > ? > Audiotape 3-3/4 ips reel > 24/96 wav > 16/44.1 wav > SBE correction > FLAC level 8

This tape has been around since shortly after the concert. I received this reel from someone in NC in about 1973. Although the gen is unknown, I suspect it's fairly low. I compared this to circulating "master" version of this, and this version definitely has more warmth and presence, but with some added hiss and a bit less high end. Some say that the circulating "master" version of this is not from the master at all.

As with all versions of this show, it starts in the middle of Bitch, and during that song the sound is suddenly muffled, then clears up again. I've always imagined that the person recording the show got spooked and ducked the mics temporarily.
Midnight Rambler cuts in just after it starts, an apparently victim of a tape flip.

Speaking of which, feel free to leave track 10 off - it's only noise between tracks. I debated whether to leave it off, and decided to include it to preserve every note (or click) of what is on my reel.

No EQ/compression/remastering efforts were done on my part. The raw wav file was DC corrected, then normalized to 98.6%.

I suggest you check this version out if you're a Stones 1972 fan - this is a great show, and this is a unique, great sounding version of what is considered to be the best audience tape from the 1972 U.S. tour.

>>>OK, last 1972 Stones reseed from me. Although I know that each of these shows has been bootlegged, I think these known lineage tapes should be up here (and there appears to be some interest, even though these have been here before).

This one was also posted by weedwacker67 on September 11, 2010, and was removed from the tracker on October 29, 2013 after being downloaded 734 times. Another Dave Departee and Donn Amick recording; many thanks to them, to weedwacker67, and to everyone else at JEMS responsible for getting this out to all of us.

Notes:
JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members.

Volume 4 captures the Rolling Stones late show at the Seattle Center Coliseum touring in support of their Exile On Main Street album. They played 2 shows this day an early and late show. This was the 3rd show of the tour and 2nd show of the tour in the U.S. This recording was done on Dave's dads combo radio/tape recorder with Donn and Dave taking turns holding the mics and working the cassette deck. This an excellent recording but a little heavy on the bass.

The complete master couldn't be located at this time so a 1st gen safety reel of Dave's was used to fill in the missing sections. This is the best overall performance of the two Stones shows Dave and Donn taped in 1972 with a fabulous performance of You Can't Always Get What You Want. The recording was mastered for sonic enhancement.
