Hello Stones Legion,

Would somebody help me? I have downloaded some mp3 files (or at least I think they are) but they have the .m4a extension and won't play in Windows Media Player (only in Nero Player). At what kps bit rate are these burned?

What does ".m4a" mean as a file extension?

use "Easy CD-DA Extractor" or other apps and convert it to mp3 or other kind of audio file

or use Winamp for playing m4a files

I believe the .m4a extension is created in MAC

.m4a is a Mac file. I believe 'lossless'. Thouh on so many boots the sound quality isn't good enough to worry about losing some highs and lows that aren't there in the original. Though some stuff on here, particularly from Rubycatgirl, is of good range.

Thank you! To all others thanks as well. Buffalo, does this mean that if I download these m4a files, that they are automatically at least 320 kps? I have not been able to learn how to do flac for 2 years now and mp3 is so much more easier to use. When I convert the m4a to mp3, it asks me "at what bitrate" to which I select 320 of course. At the same time I may be transferring a 128 m4a to a 320 kps mp3 (and if that's the case, there is no point in changing it to an mp3 at all, right?

compare the quality with 128 kps and 320 kps,
you will hear difference in the quality ,(better with 320 kbs)

m4a is Mac AIFF-files, comparable to PC's Wav-files.

While we´re at it, what is APE file. Just downloaded War Memorial Buffalo from Rocks Off Bit torrent tracker. And the tracks are in APE file. Thanks and have a rockin weekend.

I have heard part of War Memorial Buffalo in 1975 as Hotter the Hell or Hot as Hell, a semi-rough soundboard of part of the concert.

Still pissed that I did not attend that show 32 years later. I went from Stones fan to non-Stones fan, enjoying the likes of Yes, Procol Harum and Emerson, Lake and Palmer from around 1974-1976 as a 14-15 yr old.

Thankfully I turned back to being into the Stones and the Who by the time I was 16.

If you can't figure out the APE file, let me know, and I'll upload the MP3 files I have of that show.

If you can upload them, that would be great. There is nothing wrong in your earlier years choice. I like them still. But of course Stones come first. Thanks for your help.

If I take an M4a file burned at 128 kps and transfer it to a regular 320kps mp3 file, will the sound be better? I would think not since the source would have been at 128kps. I appreciate any help understanding this.

very right: the sound will never get any better then, in this case, M4a@128. only the file will be bigger.
what has been taken out to get a lower bitrate and doing so a smaller file, is lost forever.
in comparision: m4a@128 = +- mp3@160
m4a and mp3 are both ment as compressing music files. no program can give you back what's not there anymore in the file.
