It might be that your "reliable" source named Gazza didn't have any original wave files from factory pressed CDs or that he/she didn't find any.

But I did. I haven't downloaded them from any internet source, I bought them.

So these are flacs from original wave files.

So Gazza (or whoever) might have been the first uploader of MP3 files. But I'm the first uploader of flac files.

Here is what I do at the weekend:

I'm going to spend my time searching for "these bootleg guys" and ask them how they do it (instead of believing in whoever said whatever in whatever forum).

Then I know for sure and let you all know: THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT BOOTLEG RECORDINGS (perhaps these "bootleg guys" can also tell me the way to the Ark of the Covenant).

By the way: it doesn't make any sense at all to me to

1. record to a lossless format then

2. convert to Mp3 then

3. convert to wave then

4. delete the original recordings (!)

Seems more than harebrained to me.

Hillarious discussion, the bootlegers downloaded Gazza's MP3s, added Urban Steel's ABB-mixes-compilation and pressed them on a disc.
Effin' crooks.

The history of these is well known, Gazza is the webmaster of Rocks Off & it was he who brought these to our attention. The mp3s were first posted @ Rocks Off & then here. Your bootleggers have taken these mp3s & pressed a cd out of them. Sorry to say Ludwig8745, you've been cheated.

The sure way to confirm this is do a frequency analysis on the file, mp3s have a dip @ the 16Khz mark. I've already got these otherwise I would d/l them & see for you. If you up just one track I could check it out & post the graph & that would settle the matter once & for all (maybe someone else could post?)

By the way: all tracks are from exactly the same album which elmod has posted an ebay link from (see above). I bought the same CDs.

May be that helps figuring out about the "flac-affair".

Yes, I'm afraid it's mp3 sourced. Here's a snapshot of a milisecond of the song. The bass frequencies are on the left, high frequencies on the right. Notice how everything above about 16Khz has been removed, this is common to mp3s & is one way how it reduces the file size. If it was a true WAV file you'd see the graph go all the way to the left, pretty well in a straight line, to about 20Khz. Sorry about that...

F.Y.I....As I recall...the story of the Bigger Bang mixes goes something like this..

A guy was sharing some server space with a recording studio in NYC where the Bigger Bang album was being mixed. He was goofing around on the server and noticed a directory/file maked rolling stones. He was not a big stones fan, but went ahead and saved a copy. The recording lolled about on his computer for a while, but his hard disk was getting filled up and he converted the tracks into MP3 format and kind-of-forgot about them until he meet with a friend that turned out to be a Rolling Stones fan. The fan was nice enough to pass/post the MP3s on the internet for everyone to enjoy and sure enough bootlegger quickly pressed onto disks.
