Opinions wanted

I want some opinions ........I want to know what your favorite bootlegs are from various Stones tours.....in terms of sound and performance. Erik_Snow...if you've got the time, I would appreciate your input on this matter. Mainly I'm interested in what are the best performances.....but a good performance that sounds terrible is not something I really want to hear. But anybody and everybody chime in and tell me what you think are the best recorded performances from any given tour....chances are I probably already have alot of them but if somebody says a certain show from the '72 tour (or '76, or '81, or whenever) is absolutely smokin', then I might be inclined to hunt it down.......it also makes for a good discussion haha...

Hi Tumblin_Dice_07,

Well i think my favourite bootleg (for his GREAT sound and for the GREAT performance of the band) is "Steel Wheels Tokyo (VGP)" aka "Cold Steel Blue (Sister Morphine)" recorded live at the Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan, 26-02-1990, simply brillant!!

Another great one in "Bruselss Afair", there are many different sources, but i think that ""Brussels Afair - Definitive Edition (Rattle Snake)" (Brussels, 17-10-1973 & Bonus Tracks)is the best 1973 recording!!

It's all over now!

in my opinion in 1981 they played brillantly in Hampton, december 18th. the atlanta show, the only indoors on the tour, was also great and dont forget sun devil stadium on december 12th in phoenix. the firsts show of the tour were awesome because they played without sax, wich made a different sound to the band in philly, buffalo and a few others. second performance in philladelphia 26/09/81 have the best setlist on the tour in my opinion.
sorry my poor english

thanx you guys........I have Brussels Affair: Definitive Edition, Cold Steel Blue, Philly 9/25/81 (what's the difference in the setlists from 9/25 and 9/26?)Tempe 12/13/81 (that one's really great) and Hampton 12/18/81. I've heard that Atlanta show is really good but I've never heard many people talk about the recording. I read a review that called it the best show of the tour but lots of reviews will say that about different shows. I would love to hear it though....they played the Fox Theater right? I think that place just held like 4600 people or something......I know Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded their live album there in '76.

Out on Bail, Capital Theatre New Jersey 1978 is one of my favourites. Very raw performance, good recording.

It's a tough question, because there are so many aspects of each performance, something grooves you one day, and you go for something else the next day...
But, apart from Brussels 73, Handsome Girls, Philadelphia 72.....
The concerts between June 28th and July 14th 1972 were some of the most energy-filled performances ever, by the Stones. Sadly, the 2 Detroit shows doesn't exist on recording...it's supposed to be the 2 best shows of the tour.
Detroit, Baltimore, Boston and Altamont 1969 are also fantastic.
Just about all the UK gigs in in Sept 73, plus the 73 gigs after Essen.
About every 4th gig of the 75 tour is amazing....2nd Chicago, last NY, Fort Collins, Jacksonville, Toronto, 1st 4th and 5th LA....
Winter tour 73, pick any show...
From what I remember...you've got a the best shows allready, Tumblin-Dice.
The best run of concerts were probably the early July 72 shows...I'd say.

really? I think "Satisfaction" is on my copy of the 9/25 show. They closed with "Street Fighting Man" and then did "Satisfaction" as the encore. I think "Down the Road A Piece" is on my copy of 9/25 also but I'd have to go look to make sure, but "Mona" is not on there. They did "Tops" at that 9/25 show also.

Thanx Erik.......I prolly do have most of the best ones already but I'm always looking for a lost gem. I don't have Essen '73 although I do have a few songs from the 10/10/73 show. I don't have 2nd Chicago, Jacksonville, or 4th L.A. from '75 so that at least gives me a few shows to look for. Why do you think the best shows of the '72 tour were behind them after July 14th?? Burnout?

Sheppard's Bush '99

It has a reeeeeally ecclectic setlist, (I Got the Blues, Melody, Some Girls, Moon is Up, Brand New Car), the sound quality is decent (I sympahthize with aggrivatingly bad sound quality - what makes Vancouver '72 unlistenable).

Plus Mick is in a laughing, playful mood.

I meant shows after Essen. Rotterdam and Brussels....especially.
After Birmingham they did some sloppy shows, late Sept-early Oct, with exceptions of course...like Frankfurt. Bern must be the sloppiest shows they did in 73...and Hamburg, Scandinavia and Essen can't compeat with London, Manchester and Glasgow.

No, they are great, 1st Boston, Pittsburgh and Philly especially, yet some of those late July shows are not 100%, while the early July shows are all 100%. NY rocks great....but Mick had lost his voice to a certain degree. As Rockman wrote on TellMe..."the best thing you can do, is to get them ALL" (the bootlegs) hehehe

Yeah I've got Shepherds Bush '99 too......it's good........

So the Essen shows are not that good? I heard one of them was but I've never read alot of reviews or anything. I haven't heard Manchester.....so it's worth tracking down?

Oh yes, Manchester is terrific, but so is London, as you know. I don't think you're in for too many surprises, quite frankly, you got a very nice collection.

Handsome Girls is the best--bar none. For the Bigger Bang Tour anything by Drake is really good. Thanks, Drake. Love your work.

If I've said it once,I've said it a thousand times. The "Definitive" Brussels Affair is actually not the definitive release of the KBFH 1973 material. That's just a title the bootleg label came up with.It has great bonus tracks and excellent sound but,it's not the best out there.Take away the bonus tracks which you can find on other cds,and I would rank it seventh or eighth among all releases of this famous material.
As of a few months ago,the two best were Europe '73 (for the original broadcast) and Nasty Remixes (for the eighties rebroadcast).Since then, there have been two more top notch releases : "Bunnies,Busts,Bombs, and a Princess" by the Halcyon Supreme Disc (Empress Valley) label which is only Brussels material (it doesn't have Heartbreaker or any other tracks from London) and what might be the best release overall : "Nasty Music 2006 Edition".

I've heard several of those releases.......what's good about the Definitive Brussels is that it organizes all the tracks nicely. You've got the complete 10/17/73 1st show on disc one and the London and Newcastle tracks on disc two. You'd think they would have included the soundboard tracks from the 2nd Brussels show on disc two.

Tumblin_Dice_07,
I am suprised that someone who ask about stones recording (in one word bigginer) give himself royally to do speed correction. For you the best stones material is what can you find for free in mp3 format.Don't ask, just grab and judge.
buffalo 81,
Atlanta is not only indoor show, They played in Rockford, indoor too. I guess that you did not know about that beacose it nobody put on server for free download. Rockford only exist on 3 LP and crappy transfer, the same LP box on CD. Maybe I am in confusion, please correct me.

There were more indoor shows in 81 than Atlanta, Rockford and Hampton, just for the record

I'm not a beginner sumi....I have a collection of over 140 Stones shows...I have most of the shows that people mentioned here. And I would rather not have mp3's......but I do download them sometimes just to hear a show I've never heard. I was hoping somebody would tell me about a great "hidden gem" of a show that I didn't know about. It seems to me you have a rather negative attitude towards me but it's hard to tell.......I have a hard time communicating with you because I can't tell what the hell you're talking about half the time....

.........what exactly does "give himself royally to do speed correction" mean??

....but I mean really, does that have anything to do with my original post or the discussion????

Don't worry about him my friend. He was the same with me- arguing about the every 'nuance' of mastering a recording that was done with an ancient microphone stuck down someone's pants!. Oh the joy & wonder of such technology!
