DON’T LOOK BACK’
Mick JAGGER
guesting with Peter TOSH
(FP 183)
We thought it was a good idea to collect all available versions of Mick Jagger's collaboration with Peter Tosh and his band in 1978.
To make the project more comprehensive, we have decided to present all the versions of this collaboration that have not been officially released.
Don’t Look Back is originally a song from The Temptation, written by William ‘Smokey’ Robinson and Ronald White.
Late May 1978: PETER TOSH & MICK JAGGER. Woodstock, New York, Bearsville Studios. Producers: Peter Tosh and Robert Shakespeare. Sound engineer: Karl Pitterson.
Executive producers: The Glimmer Twins.
- Don't Look Back I with MJ on vocals; Bush Doctor-version
- Don't Look Back II with MJ on vocals; long version
- Don't Look Back III with MJ on vocals; dub version (aka Don't Space Out)
These 3 officially released disc versions are absent from this volume!
Part I°] The Woodstock Rehearsals:

01 - Don’t Look Back rehearsal session #1
02 - Don’t Look Back rehearsal session #2
03 - Don’t Look Back rehearsal session #3
04 - Don’t Look Back rehearsal session #4
channel balanced (+20% to the left channel), de-clicked
Part II°] The Live performances:
Line-up: MJ (voc) except on the 1st track/Peter Tosh (gtr, voc)/Robbie Shakespeare (bass)/Sly Dunbar (dr)/Mikey Chung (gtr)/Robert Lyn (keyb)
05 - 29th June 1978: PETER TOSH. Lexington, Kentucky, Rupp Arena
Although it does not follow the chronology, we have decided to include this version (in which Mick Jagger does not participate), because it was the reference used for the following tracks
I used my silver from Kentucky Fried Rockers’ (Kisses Deluxe).
06 - 19th June 1978: PETER TOSH & MICK JAGGER. New York City, New York, Palladium
The same source is used on ‘New York City 78’, ‘The New Palladium’ and on the Exile Records version (EXM 005A./

. Only this last one is lossless.
The best sound came by merging the Exile version (on the right channel) with the ‘New Palladium’ version (on the left channel). For the speed I used the Lexington version as reference.
07 - 21st June 1978: PETER TOSH& MICK JAGGER. Hampton, Virginia, Coliseum
This recording appears on ‘Hampton Hellraisers’ (Rockin’ Rott): It’s an incomplete lossless recording (the beginning is missing).
08 - 22nd June 1978: PETER TOSH & MICK JAGGER. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Convention Center,
This recording appears on “Myrtle Beach’78”: it’s an incomplete lossless recording. As it was running too fast, I decelerated it by -2,5%. The azimuth is upgraded.
09 - 10th July 1978: PETER TOSH & MICK JAGGER. St. Paul, Minnesota, Civic Center Arena
This version comes from Glimmerman: thanks a lot!
10 & 11 - 11th July 1978: PETER TOSH & MICK JAGGER. St. Louis, Missouri, Kiel Opera House
The same recording appears as St. Louis on ‘Satisfaction Guaranteed’ and ‘Let Them Burn Your Town’ (Rockin’ Rott) or as Oakland on ‘From Lakeland To Oakland’ (Red Devil),’Handsome Girls’ (Dandelion) and ‘Handsome Girls And Some Wives’ (OMS).
The more probable origin is St. Louis though.
Here I offer a version coming from BT2G vinyl rip decelerated by -1,1% and a merged version with ‘Handsome Girls’ on the left channel and (‘From Lakeland To Oakland’ on the right channel).
Part III°] Promofilm:
between 26th - 29th October 1978: PETER TOSH & MICK JAGGER. Strawberry Hill Hotel, Irish Town, St. Andrew, Jamaica. Shooting of a promofilm.
Line-up: MJ (voc)/Peter Tosh (gtr, voc)/Mikey Chung (gtr)/Sly Dunbar (dr)/Robbie Shakespeare (bass)/Robert Lyn (keyb)
12 - New vocals on prepared backing track
Part IV°] Saturday Night Live:
16th December 1978: PETER TOSH & MICK JAGGER. US TV (NBC) ‘Saturday Night Live’ New York City, Rockefeller Center
Line-up: MJ (voc)/Peter Tosh (gtr, voc)/Robbie Shakespeare (bass)/Mikey Chung (gtr)/Sly Dunbar (dr)/Robert Lyn (keyb)/Lou Marini (sax)/Alan Rubin (tp)/Tom Malone (tb)/& three female backing singers
13 - I added as intro a speech from MJ celebrating the Peter Tosh museum in Kingston, then it’s a merge from two lossless sources
The intro comes from ZitRock’s DVD ‘Mick Jagger Through The Years’ (ZR DVD MJ 21-03) thanks a lot!
