When this was announced as the final show of the Rolling Stones tour I knew I needed to
go and bought a pit ticket and a reserved seat so I could decide which would be better
for taping and since it was a small place, sell the extra. I booked a first class ticket
on miles SFO to Fayetteville Arkansas via Atlanta. It was the second closest airport
Delta served and since I had never been to Arkansas it made sense to tick it off the list.
As the show got closer there were loads of tickets so getting my money back was not going
to happen. It was either get 30 cents on the dollar or take someone and not go solo. I
also wanted someone willing and able to run a set of gear so I asked a friend from Philly
who now goes by Taper611 (hint, that is his height) if he wanted to join me. He said sure
and this all came together a few days before. I booked his ticket on miles to coordinate
meeting in Atlanta then we both would fly to Fayetteville. Spend the night by the airport
then drive to Branson Missouri which was the closest accommodations. The return was just
in reverse the day after the show. As long as there were no crazy delays this would work.
Woke up Friday morning to alerts on the phone about a Crowdstrike software issue that had
affected many companies including Delta and my 12:30 PM Delta flight had been cancelled.
Fortunately I was rebooked on the 7:30 AM flight that had been delayed to 1:00 PM. I
arrive at the airport and the check in area looks like peak holiday except its people
trying to rebook flights. Based on my wait on the Diamond Medallion line of 15 minutes
I would estimate the regular line was 4 hours. Security was easy since no one could get
that far. Got a seat at the lounge and watched my flight get delayed. My friend is having
the same issue and it is looking tight for making our connection but I was boarding. Then
we sat and waited for catering since breakfast (this was the 7:30 AM flight) had been
sitting for 6 hours. I finally take off and while in the air I get notified the connection
was cancelled. I couldn't call the Diamond line since I was flying so I tried the chat line.
I was told the next agent in 641 minutes. I couldn't rebook anything on the website either.
Once the plane touched down at 11:30 in Atlanta I called the Diamond line and got a woman
who was fried from a full day of it who was trying to rebook us after a 25 minute wait. I
had a 45 minute ground hold until a gate was ready and then another 45 minutes until the
jet bridge was attached. I offered to fly into Springfield Missouri, Fayetteville AR,
St. Louis, Kansas City or Oklahoma City. By now the woman had accidently cancelled our returns
and gave be the best option as Atlanta to Detroit to St. Louis arriving 5 hours before doors
in Ridgedale Missouri. She gave up and connected me to another woman who was able to book
up the next afternoon into Springfield. By now is 2AM and was time to find a place to stay.
The airport was chaos and there were tens of thousands of people trying to rebook flights
and survive the night. Every terminal had a line that was hundreds of people long waiting for
help. I call Marriott because after midnight its not possible to book a room for yesterday and
there is a Fairfield Inn 30 miles away. At 3AM we arrive to find the hotel has no rooms and there
are 15 other parties just like us. They wouldn't do anything at the hotel and when I called
Marriott they tried to get me to take another 45 minute Uber ride to a full hotel. Finally we
let ourselves into the indoor pool area and tried to sleep in a 90 degree humid room on a
lounge chair. By 8 we are back to the airport since we needed to check in before our flight.
I ask an employee about my checked luggage and got a blank look. Finally I got her to search
the bag tag to see if it was re-routed. She says its at baggage claim. This was not good.
I tell my friend to go through security since I have pre-check and lines were long. I get to
baggage claim and get someone to look it up and says its at carousel 5. Carousel five is
surrounded by 4 or 5 bags deep oval and is easily thousands of bags. Every carousel was like
this. I get lucky and find it right away and clear security as my friend does and we head
to one of the lounges for a few hours. While waiting our flight gets delayed multiple times
as I track the incoming plane. About the original departure time the gate changed so we
switched lounges. Finally about 5 hours late we leave and land in Springfield. I pick up
the rental car and we check in at the hotel in Branson. We grabbed some BBQ and went back
to hotel and crashed. Woke up and got ready for the show. Met Peter from Australia who was
driving to the show with us to take advantage of the prepaid parking and arrived early. The
preferred parking was great but leaving was going to suck since there was only one road in
and out. They opened the doors to an area with vending, food trucks, bar and DJ and I went
right in and got in line with all the pit people. Actually getting into the venue was a bit
disorganized and people could have gotten trampled but had no issues. Many people came from
out of town but I was surrounded my locals. To my left was a father and his son who was about
10 and to might right wa a couple who just talked and talked in a loud way during the music.
Unfortunately I ended up with cable issues trying to lean forward so the Samantha Fish recording
is a combination since Taper611 missed the beginning. Between us we got the show. At the end
of Samantha Fish it still wasn't crowded because of traffic and the start time was delayed by
what seemed like an hour. Overall the sound was great, cool venue for the show and the performance
was one of the best from the tour. If this was the final US Stones show they did it right.
Getting out meant hiking the hill and navigating the crowd. Made it to the car and luckily
we had cold drinks and snacks because we didn't move for 3 hours. Listened to the entire show
in the car. Went to sleep after 3 and was up mid morning and back to Springfield and the airport.
We were there with a bunch of people who were at the Stones shows and waited and waited. It
became obvious we were going to miss our connections so I called Delta. It was no different
from the outbound flights and we booked flights for Tuesday. Finally about 5 hours late we
leave for Atlanta. Upon landing we both discover our flights were delayed and we both run to
catch our original flights. He gets on his flight and I talk to the woman on the Diamond line.
She says there are 3 open first class seats open but she can't book it but the gate agent will
or should. Unfortunately I get a gate agent with attitude. He tells me if I want to fly first
class I should stick to my original reservation. I show him that my bag is loaded on the plane
but he didn't care. Said I was 31 out of 45 stand-by and 21 open seats. It is 2:30 AM at this
point. The flight starts boarding then is cancelled when the crew timed out. At least I had a
9:30 seat and the plane was at the gate. I went to lounge which opened at 4AM. I get an alert
my bag was loaded on the wrong flight but was told it would be waiting for me. Not a bet I would
take. I landed in SF and was told I could look for my bag. Since there was no record of it
leaving the plane I didn't spend too much time. It was located and I had to pick it up 4 days later.
The music was great but the Deltapocolypse was not fun. Hoping this wasn't the last time.
