Again, thank you Glimmerman for this most excellent upload. Truly a treassure.
I took advantage of a heavy caffeine rush this morning to dvelwe into the comment made by Gotdablouse and NedFlanders above - about the similarities between Pommes de Terre and Following the River.
I mean, out of the gate it is evident they are different recordings, yet parallel compositions created in the same creative window by the same performer : Nicky Hopkins at Villa Nellcote.
Anyhow, I extracted and isolated the piano from Following the River for fun and ran a side by side analysis to see what came up.
Having analysed both tracks , it’s clear that Following the River and Pommes de Terre share the same harmonic vocabulary, classical "Nicky-motifs" as well as strikingly similar cadential shapes. (PdT at 2.58 and FtR at 1.40)
That said, they’re in different keys, with Pommes de Terre coming across as the darker, more inward and perhaps more melancholic sister. The tempos differ too, with Following the River being the slower of the two.
I didn’t find any clear looping going on in either track, but the 02.05-02.18 section in Following sounds like a sped up repetition of 00.03-00.15. Furthermore, sans the vocals and instrumentation the edits around the 2-minute mark, and then at 3.35, 04.00 and 4.23 also are more pronounced - all of which seems to confirm it [Following the River] was cut down from a longer piece.
