Rank Stanger, I remember that years ago, you said this LP was released soon after the concert. And I believe you.
The original release :
Laminated cover - back cover : basic color is brown
lables : red border around the Caution emblem
matrix numbers : AS.TS. 197810 // AS.TS. 197811
1981 edition :
cover not laminated - back cover : basic color is yellow
lables : black border around the Caution emblem
matrix numbers : AS TS 197810-A // AS TS 197810-B
sound : different EQ.
To my eyes and my ears, there is no loss of quality for the cover, the lables, the sound. The sound is just differently EQued, not superior, not inferior.
A copy or a reworked release ? I don't know.
In 1982, appeared "Brown Sugar & White Snow", with Caution lables again, music from Essen October 09.
Matrix numbers : 198 810-1 // 198 810-B
A real mistery to me. If someone have more infos....
More infos? Here we go!
First, a short introduction to explain the origin of the original "The Stars In The Sky They Never Lie"-album.
Info is taken from Yeeshkul, the (sadly no longer active) Pink Floyd bootleg-related torrent site and
is valid also for "The Stars In The Sky They Never Lie" because it was done by the same bootleggers as the Pink Floyd album in question.
In 2010, Yeeshkul user "grolsch" (RIP) replied in a discussion about the original tapes of a certain Pink Floyd bootleg, in particular to the comment: "...another mysterious thing is how during these last 39years any non-vinyl-sourced version of this gig never surfaced... or at least the reels used to press some of these vinyl boots...":
"Tapes were originally done by the n. brothers.
These great folks (last met ro. at one of the wall shows - his twin ra. died a long way back from an overdose in berlin) were responsible for most of all the german boots like m502, early tours, tour 72, tour 73 etc etc etc. you name it - you got it!
When Dylan came to Europe again in 1978, they decided to put up a huge stall of boots right in front of the main entrance of the Westfalenhalle (Dortmund) concert. By then they had been under the radar of the german BKA and got busted heavily.
One of the twins managed to espcape and take some of the tons of stuff they taped (always in superb quality) to a farm in Luxemburg. He stayed there for a short time, ran out of money and had to run away over night as the german police had managed to trace him, leaving everything behind.
So - god only knows if there are any tape copies left in extistance:
1
Go try the BKA storage in Wiesbaden. God only knows if they've still got it!
2
The folks who took over the farm reportedly threw away everything except for
a handful of reels (no Floyd) in the mid eigthies.
3
Copies of their master reels exist. Mostly incomplete and far from perfect.
I recall hearing "ahm" + "ahm reprise" at a german hoarder's place in
absolutely mint quality. Far better than any of the pressings. BUT - that's
all he had. And: there was an overdub problem for a couple of seconds.
Anyhow - guess we'll have to stick with what we got ????"So far grolschs information from 2010. So it's clear that excellent audience tapes of the complete Essen and Hamburg shows once existed as it was usual n. brother's practice to record complete shows and pick certain tracks for their bootleg releases. However, if they're still existing now, possibly at some "german hoarder's place" is a different question and given the rough ride of the n. brothers I would not hold my breath.
Finally, the 1982 "Brown Sugar & White Snow" Essen release, despite claiming to be on the Caution label, has nothing to do with the N. Brothers and their (excellent) 1973 Essen tapes. This one was done by another unscrupulous (german) bootlegger to fool potential buyers to think that after all these years, they're finally getting more from the excellent N. Brothers Essen 1973 tape, which of course was not true at all (different tape source, much lower sound quality).
Hope this info helps to shed some light on the history of the great "The Stars In The Sky They Never Lie" bootleg album!
