Happy New Year the files are in MP3 320 format for storage reasons. If you would like flac format there are free audio converter apps to change the quality. I have an android app that's free and easy to use.

Can anyone upload in true, lossless FLAC?

@drgonzo: Thx, but once a recording has been destroyed by converting it to lossy mp3, there is no point in converting it anymore - once the frequencies are cut, it is destroyed forever sad smileyangry smiley!

Is it known if the files pressed on the CDs are lossless? Lately I think most aren't. Same goes for bootleg LPs.

mp3's exist since 1991 - and bootleg vinyls?

Yes, I'm saying bootleg CDs and Vinyls use MP3 sourced files. Not sure when this started but it's definite. I can tell you the IEM Munich 2022 is MP3. Maybe someone else has more information.

thanks @drgonzo!!

yes, it's true that mp3 can't be converted to FLAC, as the files are damaged by the MP3 format.

My apologies to all. I was unaware that converting it the files would be damaged by converting to mp3. I was just trying to help

You can check all audio files with a prog. called SPEK ( hxxps://www.spek.cc ) - xx = tt

Once a file was converted to MP3 all frequencies above approx. 15 kHz are LOST FOREVER.

This is basically the same as Mayflower MF-042-044 and Mayflower MF 198-201 Beggars Banquet Sessions. [iorr.org]

Correct. As far as I know this is a simple and great tool to have. Also, MP3s can be upscaled to FLAC, checking for 15kHz is basically the best way to detect it. I've found many online claiming to be lossless but they're not. That's why I down sample them to 320 kHz. Might as well save space.

I wonder who, older than 60, can honestly assume to hear the difference between mp3 320kbps and flac format...

You can test yourself and find out - look here

To me, lossy is better than nothing. But I think the greater issue is that when you post lossy files, you contaminate the trading space.

You don't just lose high frequencies, you lose detail. An audience applauding in .mp3 sounds like nasty digital hash. In lossless, you can actually hear hands percussing close to the taper, plus audience dialog inaudible in lossy. If it does that for the garbage on a recording, imagine what it does for musical instruments such as cymbals, etc.

I can tell the difference when the dynamics are very low. But very true statement about MP3 320kps vs. flac. When I down sample a good flac with high dynamics it's very hard to tell the difference. I'm 62.
