Hi all,
I am sorry. I got the mp3 files from a friend, I asked her the source and if I could use it for a multi-cam video. I mixed it with 3 videos because otherwise, you couldn't hear Keith on Tell Me Straight.
I didn't read that I was not allowed to use it. If that is a problem, I can remove the video from YouTube (it's offline for now). I don't want to make any trouble.

The only thing I wanted to do was make a free available multicam video for fans around the world, not to bother anyone.

I heard that there was something on SoundCloud with more guitar which I was not allowed to use without permission, so I haven't used that.

Like I said, you give up control when you release online. I accept that. But seems like you could and should have read it. I might have contributed with higher resolution audio (or fixed Keith's vocals) of it was a good video project. Instead you jumped the gun and rushed release.

And yes maybe I could used better audio/video or ask first, you are right that I want to rush, but people are more interested in seeing things now instead of next month. I don't make any money from this, it's just that I want to enjoy with everyone together in the week of the show, if possible.

It is best practice to get permission before using somebody else recording in a project before releasing. Now sometimes that's not always possible, especially youtube where folks never check messages. But this could have easily been avoided if you pumped the brakes and cleared up any loose ends. I would strongly suggest that you obtain permission from all contributors for any future projects to mitigate further issues.

I believed I had permission from a friend who assured me it was okay to use, but especially with recent recordings, I should have been more diligent. By taking more time to verify permissions, this could have been avoided.

That PayPal link (on my other YouTube channel btw), was there because people want to support the channel, that was a request not even my own idea.

You're still collecting money. Which is something I strongly disagree with in this hobby, but you do you.

Damage is already done with the video. I have no further axe to grind against you personally but its rather indicative of how things seem to go on this site.

There was some motivation in releasing this mix as an mp3 and a novelty mix to see what would happen. Thought maybe it would get remastered/matrixed on this site, reposted all over, sold by bootleggers, or slapped onto a YouTube project. Those other things may happen but you did the first faux pas. Whatever, what's done is done. Like I said in the original post, you give up control when you release publicly.

I'm moving on for this. Focusing more on recording tonight's show!

Any money made should at the very least be donated. The video project I was involved in for the Ginger Baker Tribute Concert was put up on the charity page by Ginger Baker's daughter to raise money for the beneficiary of the concert. That's what tapers do, not make money off the work of others.

Mike Millard spent ages trying to do this. Now he’s not here and all his recordings, unmarked, area available on YouTube, dimeadozen and on factory pressed bootleg cd.

I doubt it is about recognition for most.

It's about people treating their work with respect by not altering it against their wishes and not profiting from recordings originally provided for free. The biggest money makers are probably not the cd manufacturers but the likes of edge, accountant etc on guitars101 using affiliate links to generate income despite multiple requests not to use some material. Anyone under the impression that those people make 25,000 uploads motivated by nothing but generosity is seriously deluded.

So the answer is just tape for your personal pleasure. Don’t participate in forums and post stuff talking about your recordings or put teasers out. You can’t have one foot in and one foot out.

You either worry about this stuff or don’t. Either post your stuff and don’t worry about it, or don’t. If you’re proud of your work, then let it out so others can appreciate it. If you’re proud of your work but want to control what happens to it to such an extent that you won’t release it, then you might as well not bother. If you release bits then put conditions on it, then you’re courting drama.

Example: if this full IEM had been released anonymously, complete, in WAV form = no drama, plenty of respect, appreciation and admiration. Yes, people know taping isn’t easy, that there is expense and risk involved, particularly with IEMs. Some people might put it on YouTube. Japan might press some on cd for those who collect. The world still goes round. Other recordings surface. Other tours happen. People like the IEM recording. No drama, no stress, no controversy. The taper has put good karma out there and everyone is happy. The End.

Yes. There are a ton of my recordings - audience recordings, soundboards, IEMs, ALDs, studio recordings and outtakes - recorded and sourced by me over many years. A number are Rolling Stones, more are other artists and performers. I’ve done them all.
I’ve actually sourced and released more material that most tapers by a fair distance, usually at great personal expense. All my stuff is out there. My recordings and photos have ended upon bootlegs, on youtube and on torrent sites. I’ve even had other people claim credit for recordings that we actually done by me. I don’t care.

The fact that you ask this shows one thing - you don’t know who I am or what recordings came from me and you don’t need to know. It makes no difference. It’s not about me. My ego, name, what I’ve recorded doesn’t come into it.

My opinion is that it shouldn’t with other tapers either.

I would agree with this post in a big way. You can call it ego or whatever, but many tapers (myself included) spend a ton of time, money, and effort to pull off quality recordings. So to see somebody profiting off something you created and released for free doesn't sit well. To see somebody butcher your hard work by mixing it with poor cell phone audio doesn't sit well. To see somebody gloryhound by remastering your recording poorly doesn't sit well. So yes, there is ego buried in there too, but I find that to a regular trend among tapers who take the hobby seriously.

Now, everybody is entitled to their own take on that. Some are much more live and let live, and let everything slide. Great for you and your recordings. I'm friends with several tapers who are very relaxed about that kind of stuff where I'm not.

I go back to my info file on this recording:
Please do not remaster or use this audio for any video project or personal youtube/soundcloud/etc page. It's considered offensive to take the audio/video and co-opt that hard work without permission. Especially folks that "remaster" the audio, while overloading and distorting the audio. If you want to remaster the audio...go back to the original recording and do your own (with taper permission!)

While it's released for free on the internet, and I can take no real action if somebody takes the audio, I ask that you honor this simple request. After all, the only logical alternative to stop folks co-opting the audio is to simply stop releasing material on the internet, and just restrict it for sharing with other tapers. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.

I don't feel that's an unreasonable statement.

Tapers.
