ISO: Censored "Star Star" on CD (official releases)

I read "The first shipment of CBS US “Goats Head Soup” CDs has the censored version of “Star Star.” Later CBS editions of Goats Head Soup do not have the censored “Star Star.” "

There was no catalog number or matrix number listed.

Then I read.....

"In 2009 Universal Goats Head Soup CDs used the censored tape, and still is using the censored "Star Star."

Please check your CBS and UMe releases of "Goats Head Soup" and let us know if you have or do not have the censored "Star Star," please?

I know that the release of GHS listed below has the censored "Star Star."...

UMe B0012815-02

Barcode: 6 02527 01560 6

Matrix / Runout (Variant 1): DIDX-222140 1
Mastering SID Code (Variant 1): IFPI L332
Mould SID Code (Variant 1): IFPI 7251

I do not know if the other two releases of GHS UMe B0012815-02 have the censored "Star Star."

Matrix / Runout (Variant 2): DIDX-222140 1
Mastering SID Code (Variant 2): IFPI L332
Mould SID Code (Variant 2): IFPI 720V

Matrix / Runout (Variant 3): DIDX-222140 3
Mastering SID Code (Variant 3): IFPI L328
Mould SID Code (Variant 3): IFPI CC303

If you want uncensored get the 1994 Virgin disc. Go to Discogs.com

I do not think any old CBS CD had censored Star Star. Maybe that was a misunderstanding and a mix up with UM 2009 reissue.

I do not know all details about that 2009 remaster/reissue. Some of UM discs were with censored version, some were with normal.

Positively censored version was reissued on Time Waits for No One: Anthology 1971-1977 [UICY-78939]. This is SHM-CD in mini LP sleeve. Nothing special about the music (2009 remaster was used as a source), but surely a nice toy for a collector of stamps. As well as the rest of the series that was issued in 2019 in Japan and became available for the ROW at bargain prices in 2020.
1. Sticky Fingers (Spanish version) [1971] [UICY-78937]
2. Made in the Shade [1975] [UICY-78938]
3. Time Waits for No One: Anthology 1971-1977 [1979] [UICY-78939]
4. Sucking in the 70's [1981] [UICY-78940]
5. Rewind 1971-1984 (European version) [1984] [UICY-78941]

Star Star would be a really short song if it were censored.

Censorship there is minor. Just weird sound effects were added in the vicinity of words 'pu**y' and 'John Wayne'.

My 1986 CBS CD GHS has the uncensored Star Star
My 1994 Virgin CD GHS has the uncensored Star Star
My 2009 Universal CD GHS has the censored, like the orignal LP , Star Star, and as a collector I'm glad to have this early UM version.
Same CD matrix number as pictured above

I don't have yet the UM with the uncensored version, but since it's available on other CDs, there's no urgency to get it

By the way my 1986 CBS vinyl LP has the uncensored version of Star Star

Thank you for that interesting information. I didn't bother with Time Waits for No One since I wasn't stamp collecting (for artwork, etc).

My quotes are from SHTV. They often do not put catalog numbers or matrix numbers in their post or matrix numbers.

The UMe GHS from 2009 must be a clone reissued in Time Waits for No One 2009.

I wonder if each release of GHS UMe 2009 has the censored Star Star.

Well, guess they messed things around.
Or maybe there was one I am not aware of. Let's see.
CBS Japan for Europe edition [CDCBS 450207 2] 1986-1987, Matrices DIDP-10589 11 +++++ or DIDP-10589 11 A1 +++++ - uncensored
CBS European edition (Made in Austria) [450207 2] 1987-1993, Matrix CDCBS-450207 22 A5 (actually, no matter stampler A6, C1, C2, D9 etc.) - uncensored
CBS Japanese editions form 1986 [32DP602], 1989 [23DP5571] and 1992 [SRCS-6206], no matter matrices and stamplers - uncensored.

Actually, all mentioned above are digital clones.

Now for the US CBS
There are at least 4 pressings.
1. Early Sony's Digital Audio Disc Corp., Terre Haute, Indiana. Matrix DIDP 70288 11A6 (or similar, depending on the stampler code Ax). Apparently, in press from December 1986 till 1988.
2. Japan for USA, JVC pressing, matrix CK 40492 V2E1. This one supposed to be 1987 (judging matrix style).
3. Columbia Records, Pitman, New Jersey. Matrix 1A CK40492 01 CMU P73 or similar. This one was issued after 1988
4. Late Sony's Digital Audio Disc Corp., Terre Haute, Indiana. Matrix DIDP 070288 8 (or similar). This is relatively late pressing, probably, post-1990.
Maybe one of those has censored version. But I sincerely doubt.

From Rarities Done Right:

Goats Head Soup
1973 US LP early pressings Matrix/Runout ( Side B ): COC-59101 B
Star Star [censored, no ‘pussy’] (4:26) aka Starf_cker
An alternate version that censors the phrase “I bet you keep your pussy clean”
by obfuscating it with other lyrics. This track was remastered and issued on
some of the UM remasters without indication on the cover.

In the U.S. my copy was uncensored. I heard some in the U.S. got a censored version, but I had to swap with someone in Germany to get the censored version. There was no way to tell on the cover as far as I know. There may have been indication on the disc (i.e. matrix #) but I'm not sure.

My US copy = Matrix / Runout (Variant 3): DIDX-222140 3 = uncensored
My EU copy = Matrix / Runout: 06025 270 156-0 01 * 52294809 = censored

Yes.

Thanks. There's no sense for me to collect the same exact recording over again unless I'm a stamp collector.

I remember buying the Time Waits for No One album when it was released. I thought it was a great collection of songs. Was this album an import to the US?

Thank you for clarification. Technically,
06025 270 156-0 01 * 52294809 - first glass master(ing attempt). I.e., this is early pressing - censored.
DIDX-222140 3 - third glass master(ing attempt). I.e., later reissue - uncensored.
So they change digital content between pressing runs. Nothing unusual, but interesting.

My understanding, and all I've ever heard was, the censoring with the obfuscated lyrics. I've never heard the actually edit out of the P word.
Where can that be found? I've not heard of early LP pressings with such an edit
thanks

I would think the matrix number indicates what material is on the disc. Iron Belly would know for sure.

I appreciate the information. We are getting a list of where to find the censored versions of Star Star.

Reading 'Rarities Done Right' started me on this journey to find the censored Star Star on CDs. Thanks to everyone's help, we will have a nice list of CDs with the censored Star Star.

I don't know your standards for deeming a song musically mediocre, perhaps because it's basically a Chuck Berry song with some 'tact-y smut' as one reviewer put it.

I love Star Focker! It Kicks ass! Keith is on fire. Mick portrays a very convincing performance. IT ROCKS! Star Star pumps me up!

I met a guy who opened a sports bar in my friend's neighborhood who claimed to be a huge Rolling Stones fan.

We went to the sports bar for lunch and talked with the guy. He had Rolling Stones items hanging in the bar. He told us every night when they do their cleaning, they crank up the volume on Star F@cker to give them the energy to do their work. LOL!

You're a star Fu ck-a, star fu ck-a, yes you are, yes you are, yes you are!

I grew up with the censored Star Star. I never knew there was censorship happening in that song. I never knew the word 'pussy' was in the song until CDs were released. I thought where the censorship came in, the lyrics were "You better call the police." Something about police. LOL!

I love the censored version of the song the best. I think the techniques used to censor the song are very artful and add to the song. It's very cool IMHO.

The uncensored version lacks a great part of the song IMHO. Other people think differently.

ProfBoz, Jun 6, 2011 in SHTV wrote:

"Avoid the most recent US Universal remaster, as it includes a bizarre "censored" version of "Star Star" in which a random line of Jagger's vocal line is superimposed over the part where he sings "keep your ***** clean"-- this despite the fact that the song includes like 39 iterations of the F word. Apparently, the UK version (UMe) of this remaster has the uncensored version."

It's not apparent to me or the info from wiredallnight.

I find it funny ProfBoz comments how the 'P-word' is censored, but the 'F-word" is not censored, "the song includes like 39 iterations of the F word."

I can't imagine the censorship conversation went between the Stones and the record company. Are there any stories about Star Star and its censorship? Was there a censored version of the song and an uncensored song created at the same time or did the Stones have to go back into the studio and censor the song?

We all know from the sheet music Mick is singing "Star Bucker." ;0)

I thought the one line is "Got to get ya in their gloves."

Censored "Star Star"

"It's also on the original U.S. Atlantic vinyl release as well.

The later CD version without the censored line was pulled from the UK master while Universal uses the U.S. remaster IIRC.

It was only the first batch of the Universal's that had the censored version. Later editions switched back to the original."

My EU copy = Matrix / Runout: 06025 270 156-0 01 * 52294809 = censored

Thanks for the chuckle because you wanted the censored Star Star. Me too!

"I had the 2009 UMG remaster. The second verse didn't censor... er, that which Mick believes to be kept tidy and hygenic, we'll say, although for some reason they tried to censor "John Wayne" at the end by repeating "that you" over it." -InStepWithThe Stars
