Rolling with the Stones – Extended Cut

Radio 2's Festive Selection Box

Six decades ago, when Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Brian Jones and the late Charlie Watts played together for the first time in a scruffy pub in London’s Soho, a global phenomenon was born. Today this incredible rock’n’ roll band are still riding every musical wave and bucking every musical trend by the simple expedient of being themselves.

Introduced by Cerys Matthews and drawn from hours of unheard interviews from the band’s own archives, Rolling with The Stones offers the ultimate look at the elements that make up the Rolling Stones, told intimately and revealingly by the people who were there. Listeners will hear directly from Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman and the much missed Charlie Watts .

There’s never been a band like The Rolling Stones, there’ll never be another, and Rolling with The Stones explains why.

With additional material from the Rolling Stones documentary broadcast earlier in the year, this is a specially extended version celebrating the legendary Stones. The extended cut!

I was just trying to figure out how to make a recording with Audacity and then I was like "let's take a look at IORR." And there it was...

Thank you, Norbert.

Merry Christmas to All!

It can also be downloaded directly from the BBC-site with yt-dlp (as MP4-Audio) which results in a much smaller file-size [126 MB].

jDownloader / 60 MB / M4A

The data rate of the download with yt-dlp is 96kbps while JDownloader is 48kbps - hence the difference in file size (126 vs 63MB, both are M4A). File size in the original post is 1.7 GB (as WAV).

For this web-broadcast, yt-dlp shows only M4A audio in 3 bitrates: 48, 51 and 96 kbps. Audio sample rate is 48kHz.

Could someone please upload the 96kbps m4a/mp4 file? Thank you.

I thought the wav file was lossy! It is not! ¿? Many thanks Norbert!

WAV to FLAC & MP3 320 kbps if anyone is interested.

The wav file is exactly the 96kbps m4a file.

Is it? The spectral view and status report are different confused smiley

Original WAV
Conclusion: CDDA 99%

Original m4a
Conclusion: MPEG 95%

I've played a music track from the lossy 96kbps M4A file with a Sony smartphone via analogue output and recorded it via analogue input on a PC with Audacity as 44.1kHz/16bit WAV file. When I tested this WAV file via Lossless Audio Checker it says 'clean' (means true lossless). The 1.7GB WAV file from post #1 was also detected as 'clean'. Maybe someone can repeat this lossless test and can confirm the result.

BBC Radio 2's highest available bitrate file is 320kb/s using AAC-LC codec (lossy). That's in the UK. I don't know about outside the UK.

The original iplayer downloader - get_iplayer, is still going and is what I use. By default it downloads the highest bitrate version in the AAC-LC codec. Exactly the same as if you selected to stream (or maybe download - I can't recall if that's possible these days) the file from iplayer.

Now that's a download. If you record radio off the air to a lossless format like wav, I don't know how it will look on a spectrum analyser. I believe the BBC air using wav files mostly, and the bitrate and quality it's captured in will depend on the equipment used.

I've just started to download it myself. 177 minutes! get_iplayer is telling me the file is 443.62MB.

What are the codecs, bitrates and protocols used for BBC radio online?

Outside the UK the tool yt-dlp shows only M4A in 3 bitrates: 48, 51 and 96 kbps. Audio sample rate is 48kHz.

I've tried get_iplayer outside of the UK with just the parameter --pid m001gc26 and it results in an (at end converted) M4A file of 126 MB which is the same as the 96kbps download with yt-dlp. When get_iplayer is started with the parameter --radio-quality=high then it says only: 'INFO: Available qualities: med, low'. The wiki of get_iplayer also says: 'NOTE: By default, get_iplayer downloads the highest audio bit rate available for radio programmes. 96k is nominally the highest bit rate available to non-UK users'.

I thought that was the case for outside the UK but wasn't sure.
I use yt-dlp for a lot of stuff. I think the reason I switched over to it from youtube-dl was because it can download faster.

An interesting discussion...
of course, the BBC online broadcast is lossy - I don't know anything about the exact bit rate, however...
To record the Stones programme in question I made use of a tool that I've used for years, simply because the system software of my PC is quite old and doesn't work with more sophisticated ones like yt-dlp.
The tool I use is Total Recorder Standard Edition
[www.totalrecorder.com]

So what I've uploaded could be called a lossless recording of a lossy broadcast...

Happy New Year
Norbert
