Well, the day has arrived when the number of hits on the sticky with the extremely well-known policy message that can't take any replies has reached 5,000 hits in just 4 months.

Are there any psychologists out there who can offer an explanation as to why as many as approximately 40 members and visitors per day have gone into the post, read the simple and straightforward one-sentence policy, yet continue to go into the post at a seemingly never-decreasing rate?

I'm not making a joke. Rather, I'm making an observation on a trait of human nature.

I think you've made a good point - well-trained IORRers know not to go into the post.

However, that would mean there's been a continual stream of non-members who, what shall I call it, keep falling for it and going into the post. Alternatively, I guess with the world's population currently standing at 7.753 billion, the potential for a few million more non-member visits to the post is quite large.

How about anybody making suggestions about how big the count will get to by Christmas? I'll boldly cast the first suggestion. I say 10,000, or near enough.

i'd say if bv leaves it up through the next tour well probably see a big spike then as fans visit more

so maybe 10,000 by next summer at this rate

and i post here regularly and still look at it from time to time

It's an inveterate sceptic here who started this thread about people clicking on a thread.

A whimsical professor is exactly what we need, but yes, a large % of us are marking time, waiting for the next big event, say (shhhh .....) the next studio album?

Oh, when I wrote "hits", I was referring to the column headed "Views" across to right of page, both words, in practical terms, meaning one and the same thing. Well, for the purpose of my whimsical post, at least.

Always there and easy to see. As I write, the subject has 5,095 views/hits.

5,099 now

Now 5,133, something like 100 views in 2 days.

Now 5,200. This is really weird.

Did I mention that this lil' ol' thread has had 728 views in just 3 days?

I give full parise to all out there who have such enquiring minds.

Number of views has now screamed up to 862.

I bet I can cause a flurry of views just with this post bumping the thread back to the top again. Expecting it to reach 1,000 in 1-2 days maximum.

I get this feeliing that views don't just happen by choice and curiosity, but also on some sort of automated basis, which may or may not be a concern.

Well there you go ..... number of views has now reached 1,000 after just 3 weeks.
Amongst other things, a strong demonstration of human nature.

All I can do is leave it to everybody to make their own conclusions.

My guess is that if your thread is up near the top of page 1, untold numbers will open it, regardless of the subject, and perhaps even more bots.

Now 1,528 views, something like 250-300 more than only two days ago. I think "bot theory" is now top of the list of suspected causes.

If it's caused by the bots of search-engines then the other threads should also have 250-300 views more in only two days - but they haven't.

I have another theory - that it could be presumed that bots could and are set upon specific targets with tailor-made parameters, like "search and trawl specifically for IORR posts concerned with, well, what am I arriving at here? Well, of course, anything with the words "official material", easily explaining why not all other threads have had view movements of the same amount over the same periods of time.

I'll rename it "tailor-made bot theory" because bots aren't necessarily set to trawl everything across the board, nor at the same rate.

Oh, did I mention that's the view count has gone up to 2,216, almost 700 more than I mentioned in my post 3 levels up only yesterday?

Maybe it should be treated as an example of conspiracy theory. Any other theories about what's happening? But, just like wishes, I suggest care be taken about what is theorized.

My guess is that it's targeted, perhaps exacerbated by "human member" entries that bring it to the top of page 1. I'm going to fall silent on the topic and make no further posts on it for the time being.

By now, after a week of silence, I've decided to report back. The count is now vast, now over 19,000, increasing at times at rates that defied human capability. There was one period when I would refresh the screen a number of times, no more than one second apart, and the count would go up by at least 10 each time.

I'll "leave it to the experts" to work out what has been going on.

19,100 or so has turned into 20,000 in no time at all. Go figure.
