Voodoo LOUNGE SONGWRITING SESSIONs
- The Complete Voodoo Residue Tapes -

20th April - mid-May 1993: St. Philip, Barbados, West Indies, Blue Wave Studios.
Writing and demo sessions by Mick JAGGER (voc, gtr, keyb, bass), Keith RICHARDS (gtr, voc, p, bass) and Charlie WATTS (dr, perc, April 30 onwards; for the two last volumes).

This great project was enabled by Glimmerman. Over 20 years ago he was contacted to write the liner notes and select the songs for what became "Voodoo Residue". For this task he had received 4 one-hour tapes. It is these tapes (half of their content has never been circulating until now!), that Glimmerman now kindly shares with us.

It was not too easy to edit each segment properly, to identify or characterize them and for that task nzb helped me a lot.
Here you won't find any completed songs, but songwriting in progress. For those who are interested in the creation of the Stones self-penned songs it is exciting to follow the progress of their work.
Many songs are abruptly interrupted, some passages are a bit saturated, others have flaws and sometimes even digital noises. I tried to make these songs more enjoyable to listen to. I didn't use a filter to reduce the background noise, unlike Vigotone did, maybe that's why the overall spectrum is better here. When it is only stated "reworked", then it generally means that I reworked the segment by adding a fade in/out, changed the amplification of the sound (by amplifying some passages and de-amplifying others) and corrected the phase (there was a very slight mismatch between the channels).

Quite a few of the song titles used in ‘Voodoo Residue’ are not confirmed or refer to just certain vocals… if vocals exist. Or if lyrics exist, as you can hear on some songs, what Keith Richards describes as vowel movement.
We decided not to go in this direction because these titles do not exist and if we use these, then they will get a life on their own and will become the titles to these songs. We have therefore chosen to name them "untitled # ..." by indicating between brackets a characteristic allowing them to be identified.

I decided to post this project in volumes of two CDs: one with the untouched tracks and another one with my reworkings... always with the idea in mind that you can keep only what you prefer.
I used Nico Zentgraf's Rolling Stones Complete Works Database for reference: [www.nzentgraf.de]
I'd like to thank my usual partners in crime Jaap (‘Stonesmuziekfan’) and nzb but also RDP for their advice and revisions and of course Glimmerman for his generosity and without whom this project would not have been possible!

on the advice of 'nzb' I made a small improvement of the text. This is the version that is now on the first mail and in future downloads (new link) But if you have the previous version, the variations are minimal!

Yep, I've only reached 5d and it's already somewhat there. It's crazy the amount of work/time they put into writing songs ! Not knowing if it will be a keeper or not ;-)

What strikes me with vol.2 is the quite large amount of MJ demos based on drum loops.
It's not just one or two but a lot, which makes me think that's the overall sound Mick had in mind for VL : a dance album based on grooves. Mick would design drum patterns with a machine and Charlie would then adapt them with his kit.

Apparently his vision was rejected by Don Was :

"(Don Was is) definitely anti-groove. Charlie and I worked on a lot of groove tunes that never made it on to the record. That was the one thing I was slightly disappointed by".

And I think Charlie said something like "some of these groves were frankly ridiculous" ?

One of the best things with these demos is that I can finally hear and enjoy Mick's rather apt and subtle rhythm playing that is otherwise buried in the mix, be it in the studio or on stage as Ronnie tends to double his parts. Here you know you're actually hearing Mick !
