The Rolling Stones released A Little Bang (Bigger Bang Tour EP) on streaming services today, available until July 9. The EP contains a number of Stones classics from their upcoming concert film and live album, The Rolling Stones — A Bigger Bang: Live On Copacabana Beach, due out on July 9 via Mercury Studios.

The five-track A Little Bang (Bigger Bang Tour EP) contains "Sympathy For The Devil", "Wild Horses", "You Got Me Rocking" and "Happy" from the legendary rockers' landmark 2006 concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio di Janeiro, one of the largest free concerts in history. The collection also includes "Rough Justice" from the Stones' Salt Lake City stop on their A Bigger Band Tour.

I'm setting up a budget audiophile system for my office. I have a small amp, a DAC, compact speakers and a small subwoofer.

I downloaded the 24 bit FLAC files.

When I started to play Sympathy, the opening drums were startling. A great performance. I HOPE this is the mix we get for the complete release. The Brown Sugar release on YouTube is just awful....

Mastering engineers applied various effects such as equalization and compression to the mix. The compressor is often the core tool used by a mastering engineer. This obviously causes a loss of dynamics (volume difference between loud and quiet parts of the song).

Once a track has been compressed, it can be amplified (significantly), making it seem louder, even though your volume knob stays the same. This means the guitar, bass, drums, etc. now sound like one huge instrument that sloshes along, rather than a guitar, bass and drums with plenty of “air” between the instruments.

Anyone who has compared a song on a vinyl record to a CD may have noticed the vinyl mix sounded quieter. The vinyl mix was really more dynamic, you just need to turn your volume knob up when listening to the vinyl mix in order to balance out the perceived loudness. Both formats were mastered with compression, but the vinyl mix cannot be mastered as “hot” as the digital mix because of the sensitive mechanical components that make a record work.

The major downside to excessive compression levels is the listening fatigue. This makes listening to the music unpleasant due to your ears hurting. Even lower volume levels can introduce listening fatigue due to the ever-constant volume level that your ears get sick of.
