this is my take on those legendary concerts in 1993.This version of those concerts was very good, but i think it needed that little extra touch, so i did it.

Although there are other variations of these shows still active, this is an upgrade to them all. Digitally remastered. All four concerts are complete stereo multi-track professional recordings with no cuts or errors as found in some other variations. My originals are apressed on 24k gold discs, packaged in a fat boy jewel case with an outer slipcase. Comes with 32-page booklet which has been scanned & included in the download.

For reasons never explained, the TV broadcast & CD planned from these performances were all scrapped. It was an expensive decision, as Dylan had paid all expenses out of his own pocket, including those for a film crew & multi-track digital console. Everything was filmed & recorded but shelved.

Some years ago a version of the soundboards appeared - "And it Ain't In the Seats of a Supper Club" on the Liberator label. They were recordings of 2 of these Supper Club shows. They were clear, well balanced & had to have been professionally mixed. However, Liberator had clicks & gaps between tracks.

However, actually listening to these shows reveals why they were shelved, and that has nothing to do with any technical flaws. It turns out that Dylan himself was not in his best form. While the musical performances and arrangements sound mostly good, Dylan's voice on many of these performances lacks subtlety, sounds harsh and sometimes downright uninspired. Here, Dylan's ongoing search to find new angles to his songs often goes too far. I think what one can do to a song to make it sound fresh is limited to a certain degree, overdoing changes in lead vocal melodies and singing not in synch with his band what is sometimes apparent here can destroy it or at least create a hard time listening to it. It was the period when Dylan started to lose me.

That's unfortunate because in 1994 - after 3 years of drifting - Bob "woke up" and started to become exciting again. At Woodstock II (summer'94) he was magnificient and that was just the beginning.

I saw some of the preceding electric shows in the US in the fall of 1993 and the acoustic Supper Club shows were only a pale shadow of those concerts. If you want to hear Dylan at his best in 1993 listen to Jones Beach (first night), Holmdel and Hollywood Bowl.

There were better performances in autumn 1993, and also late 1992, like the Minneapolis shows. There's a reason why Dylan never released either the video or the audio officially. But the setlists for Supper Club still makes them absolutely must-haves, for me. Especially the coversongs/traditionals plus Ring Them Bells and Tight Connection....out of all things. Nice to get them all in best possible quality.
