Rolling Stones
Boston, Massachusetts, Garden
July 19, 1972

mono version: complete show
stereo version: incomplete show (All Down the Line & Midnight Rambler available only in mono)

mono lineage: Sony TC-110 w/external condenser mics-> cassette master (C120)-> playback + recording w/Tascam CC-222 CD-RW/ cassette combo-> CDR3.

stereo lineage: low gen. source, but I don't know the exact gen or lineage

Description

Here are two different audience recordings of the Rolling Stones in Boston, July 19, 1972. This is the night after they were arrested in Warwick, RI.

The mono recording was taped by a guy named Herb Staehr. According to the info I was given, the lineage is: Sony TC-110 w/external condenser mics-> cassette master (C120)-> playback + recording w/Tascam CC-222 CD-RW/ cassette combo-> CDR3. This transfer was done in 2004 and was the first ever digital master transfer. I extracted the audio from this CDR3, and did some very minor editing. I am told that this recording has previously been used by Exile for "Midnight Gamblers" and DAC for "Jailhouse Rock." Haven't heard those, but I don't think they could be much better. In terms of quality, this recording is distant but clear. Guitars are somewhat low in the mix but the drums are better recorded than usual for '72.

I don't have much info on the stereo recording. I speculate that it was taped by the same person who taped the stereo recording of the previous night. This is a low gen. source but I don't know the exact gen. The recording has several cuts, which I have patched with the mono recording. In several places, the stereo recording's left channel drops out, so I copied the right channel (which makes the recording mono). Two tracks are missing completely. If desired, you can use the mono recording for those tracks to make a complete stereo/mono show. Everything will line up seamlessly. This recording has apparently never been used on bootleg, presumably due to the cuts. Guitars are louder here, with drums barely audible as usual for '72. Hard to say which recording is better.

Presented in FLAC 1.2.1. Sorry, no art.

To hopefully clear up any confusion:

Stereo recording presented here is not on any commercial boot, to my knowledge.

Mono recording presented here is on all commercial boots. "Ginsoaked" uses an alternate mono recording, not included here, for its first part, then follows with an inferior copy of this mono recording 45 minutes in.

I am wondering if anyone has the ending part of the alternate mono recording.
