Question regarding 'Stereo Rarities Vol. 1-4'
Posted by: joguema ()
Date: August 30, 2020 16:11

Hi,

I have received these 4 CDs in a snail mail trade many years ago.
When I checked them today, all the tracks seem to be lossy.
Do lossless versions of these 4 CDs exist?

Vol.1, most probably, was sourced from old West German London CDs. Like Hot Rocks 1 [London 820 141-2], Aftermath [820 050-2] and Flowers [820 139-2] and a few others. The rest - are mix of bootlegs and official editions.

There is a trick.

If you used Trader's Little Helper to check - there could be a mistake in MPEG determination. TLH usually reacts on a sharp step in frequency spectrum. mp3 sourced files usually have this step in the range between 12-16 kHz. However, noise reduction can cause similar step around 20-21 kHz. Thus, TLH will detect MPEG although the reason for step is NR or some other digital tricks.
Your CDs are bootlegs and only God knows what those guys did to the tracks when they compile discs. Just rip a couple of songs using EAC to wav and use spectrum view to check frequency spectrum.

Thanks for the answer!

I checked all CDs with a program called "TAU Analizer 1.2" and ALL tracks of all 4 CDs were identified as MPEG.

Therefore I also checked a few tracks per CD with the program "SPEK" and here are the results:

None of them shows frequencies higher than 15kHz, which makes me think that I received WAV-CDs, which are based on MP3s.

Well, this is obvious mp3 upconvert.
You can't do nothing with it.
You can always head for old London releases for official wide stereo tracks from DECCA period. They are common on the second hand market. Obviously, this is not a solution for those from bootlegs.

Thanks again for answering!

That is what I had feared.

In order to NOT pollute the trading-pool I will clearly mark them as MP3-sourced.

This link leads to all 4 Volumes. I have checked them (4 songs of every disc) and they look lossless. But I have my doubts for Disc 4. Maybe someone with more or better experience can make a better check. You never know the sources from which this compilation is made of. Maybe some tracks are lossy and some are lossless.

Valid for 7 days.

I checked a few from each of Vol. 1-3 and ALL of Vol. 4.

They ALL have frequencies above 15 kHz, mostly around 20 kHz, so my conclusion is that they are LOSSLESS.

Thanks again!

You' re right. This seems to be an error on my disc. The track has to be exchanged. Anyone got a clean version of it? Thanks in advance!
