About the KBFH Quad-brordcast

-------------------------------------
King Biscuit Flower Hour

(Arranged by broadcast date)

The shows were provided to radio stations on 7-1/2ips 2 track reel to reel
tapes in the SQ quadraphonic format. It was thought that 7-1/2ips 4 track discrete quadraphonic
tapes from the masters existed in the hands of private collectors, this has turned out to be untrue
as they were merely the 2 track tapes supplied to radio stations and when played on a quad 4 channel
reel showed activity on the rear channel VU meters, thus confusing the issue. Vinyl LP records were
not issued until the late 70's after the quad era. CD's of the quad era shows are not SQ encoded.

Btw, the track list of this CDR set does not match the track list of the broadcast from 29th September 1974 from which the back cover claims it would come. There is more on this CDR set than what was broardacst on that date, which was:

01 Brown Sugar
02 Happy
03 Dancing With Mr D
04 Angie
05 You Can't Always Get What You Want
06 Midnight Rambler
07 Rip This Joint
08 Jumpin' Jack Flash
09 Street Fighting Man

Obviously the CDRs are a combination of this and the other broadcast from 24th November 1974.

It is interesting that on the promo ad above, it says live and in the recording studio. Would they just mean it was mixed for broadcast in the studio, or, more as I would read it, some segments were not recorded live but rather in the studio? I remember listening to this broadcast and taping it on my reel to reel (not the quad version) but I don't recall any studio stuff.

This is not from the 1974 or 1975 broadcasts. The intro probably is, but it is a separate bit.

In the late 80s KBFH released a different mix with some additional songs that were from Brussels, not London as broadcast in the 70s. For example, Brown Sugar, in the later release, had the saxophone solo, and that was not on the original release. These have the remixed version of Brown Sugar, as well as Gimme Shelter and Happy from Brussels, and the dialog. The 70s releases had those two songs from London. The same with Street Fighting Man; the original broadcasts had the London version. The 80s release used the Brussels version, the one that is present here. You can hear the sloppy splice, something that KBFH would not have done.

The later releases also mixed Mick Taylor up some, and it is here on the first eight or nine tracks. So they are definitely from the later release.

Yes those newly added Brussels tracks make sense indeed, but I'm wondering Why Quad-broadcast in 80's???
