TATTOO YOU early takes
Presentation, objectives and thanks:
After uploading the “Undercover”-sessions project, "Mick Stone" asked me to rework some “Tattoo You”- tracks
Because there weren't regular “Tattoo You”-sessions, as this album was created with reworking and finishing outtakes of previous albums, the idea was to collect all circulating versions of the tracks used for “Tattoo You”.
As for “Undercover” I did two versions: one with the untouched tracks and another one with my DIY ….always with the idea in mind that you can only keep what you prefer.
I decided to post this project in 5 volumes of two CD’s: the first CD of each volume containing the untouched versions and the second CD my DIY.
Vol 1: « Start Me Up » & « Hang Fire »
Vol 2: « Slave »
Vol 3: « Little T&A », « Black Limousine » & « Neighbours »
Vol 4: « Worried About You », « Heaven » & « Tops »
Vol 5: « No Use In Crying » & « Waiting On A Friend »
For this compilation I left out all the versions that were used for official releases.
I used Nico Zentgraf's Rolling Stones Complete Works Database a lot: [
www.nzentgraf.de] of which I tried to respect the chronology and the order of the proposed versions. It was not always easy to spot the different versions; the result is not perfect and surely to be criticized. It's possible that I made (I certainly did!) mistakes ... I thank you in advance for helping me to find and correct them. Don’t forget that all this is done for pleasure and passion....
I also used the Rolling Stones Bootleg Database: [
www.dbboots.com]
I thank them warmly and also my partners in crime, Jaap and nzb, for their advice and revisions!

Volume 2:
03 - SLAVE
Between 22nd January - 9th February 1975: Rotterdam, Holland, De Doelen, Mobile Record Unit. Producers: The Glimmer Twins. Sound engineers: Keith Harwood, Glyn Johns. Rehearsals, recordings (and playbacks of already recorded tracks). Additional musicians: Billy Preston (p, org, string synthesizer, bvoc)/Jeff Beck (gtr) & maybe others
Some precisions:
(1) - The 'playbacks' are leftovers from GHS- and IORR- previous sessions which The Rolling Stones seemed to listen to during these sessions.
(2) - Exception for the two last sequences, these recordings are coming from “1975 Rehearsals in Rotterdam” (MC-142). They’re in bad quality. In the untouched tracks I only deleted little noising parts without music.
(3) - In my reworked parts I tried to improve them in particuliar by changing the speed (decelerated by -7) amplified (around 5db), deleting hundreds of pops, noises etc… and duplicated them.
(4) - The numbers (#) are referring to the sequences order in the MC-142 production (it’s not the chronology of the sessions)
(5) - Vagina is the working title for Slave.
12a - Vagina #3 (3’46) (MC 142) - guitar working sequences
12b - Vagina #3 (3’56) (reworked) see (3)
13a - Vagina #04 to 10 (17’20) (MC 142) - working sessions
13a - Vagina #04 to 10 (17’35) (reworked) see (3)
14a - Vagina #11 (Slave #1a) (6’46) (MC 142) - instr. some shouting in the background
14a’- Vagina #12 (0’52) (MC 142) - last sequence (sound very altered)
14b - Vagina #11 (Slave#1a) (6’56) (reworked) see (3)
15a - Vagina #1 (Slave#1b) (ACT20_01) (9’47) - longer as 14a some shouting
15b - Vagina #1 (Slave #1b) (9’45) (reworked) accelerated by 0,25%
16a - Vagina #2 (Slave #1c) (8’48) (DAC 114 ) - more elaborated and some shouting
16b - Vagina #2 (Slave #1c) (8’45) (reworked) mix DAC096 & DAC 114
11th October - 12th November & 25th November - ca. mid-December 1980:
Boulogne-Billancourt (near Paris), France, Pathé-Marconi Studios. Producers: The Glimmer Twins. Sound engineer: Chris Kimsey. Overdubbing, mixing and editing for the upcoming album Tattoo You (only MJ, Chris Kimsey and sporadically KR)
17a - Slave #2a (9’43) (DAC 021) - first version with vocals, without sax
17b - Slave #2a (9’42) (reworked) accelerated by 0,13%
18a - Slave #2b (4’34) (ACT 20_ 12) - different vocals, without sax
18b - Slave #2b (4’32) (reworked) duplicated equalized
April – June 1981: Paris, Mobile Recording Unit in some unlocated warehouse (onlyMJ, ca. six weeks in April & May) & New York, Atlantic Studios. Producers: The Glimmer Twins. Sound engineer: Chris Kimsey. Additional musicians: Sonny Rollins (sax) Mike Carabello (Slave), Pete Townshend (bvoc on Slave).
19a - Slave #3 (8’41) (DAC 107) - count in, sax
19b - Slave #3 (8’46) (reworked) decelerated by -1,27%
Note: Slave #4 is the version kept for Tattoo You and #5 is the longer version (6’32), used for the 2009 remastered ‘Tattoo You’-version
