Rolling Stones 45's
Posted by: JordyLicks96 ()

Since this pandemic started, I decided I wanted to start collecting all of the Stones American 45's (including ones with the picture sleeves). I've managed to purchase most of the US 45's and some of the UK ones as well. Obviously a couple are EXTREMELY rare to find with the picture sleeve. A few years ago I won an auction on eBay for the very rare "Dandelion/We Love You" US picture sleeve (didn't have the back portion) but still a very nice rare item for my collection!! I'm also collecting some CD singles as well.

What are some of the 45's everyone has collected? Any rare ones? cool smiley

I have a complete set of Japanese eps that is really cool. On the Stones vinyl box set from the London years, there came a pack of vinyl singles in their reproduced original covers.

I collect US/UK/Germany. I chose to do so
because of Dieter Hoffmann´s Weißbuch. That
was my guide in the pre-internet days.

So get the Before They make Me Run Promo 7",
but beware of cover imitations.

Get the 7" jukebox EPs for Goat´s Head Soup
and Exile, both with cover and jukebox stripes.

I have always picked up Rolling Stones 7" with picture sleeve when I saw them. Have a bunch of Japanese singles and quite a few USA issues. Nothing especially rare except as tootough mentions the Before They Make Me Run promo and maybe the NME flexi disk. But a lot of kool covers over the years, especially some of the foreign issue versions. Number of bootlegs too, from the original Cops and Robbers ep to the 7" included with Out On Bail first few copies, I forget what that is, Sweet Little Sixteen maybe?

Got an official exile on main street record box to put them in too.

Too Tough is an interesting one. I was always under the assumption it was released as a single in the US in 1984. After doing some research I found that it was a reissue of "Miss You" as the A-side and "Too Tough" as the B-side.

It was reviewed as a single in Billboard in the Aug 11, 1984 issue and states it as a "reissue of their 1978 chart topper honors their triumphant (and concluded) Atlantic years." It was released to coincide with the REWIND hits collection. Also, the promo pressing only has Miss You.

I've read you can tell the counterfeit copies of "Before They Make Me Run" by not being able to see the pupil of Keith's left eye.

I believe that is true, Jordy. I have a bootleg copy but a friend of mine has a real one and there is a distinct difference. It comes from the bootleg using the cover of the original one but having to reshoot it from the cover art instead of having the original color separations. It lost the detail in his eyes and the photo is slightly darker overall with shadows filled in.

I managed to assemble a complete collection of US 45s and all promos over the years. One would be shocked to know how many variations there are, with font type, catalogue numbers, DJ or promo, stereo or mono orange label promos, edits, and dead wax scratchings. It's incredible fun, but frustrating, because the moment you think you have them all, there are more tweaks, variants, etc.

It's an expensive journey, but a fun one!

Good luck and God's speed to all those who try!

Most people always mentioned UK and US Singles and Germany.
They also forgot to mention that for a starter,
if he choose to collect stuff from there, sooner or later
he will need $$$ to get them, and most of the time he won't get them.
Over the years, I chose to collect the other cool stuff
sometimes way better (for display) from other countries.
Take a look at Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland for Europe,
Japan indeed but also Australia, New-Zealand and Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and so on.
Your collection will grow faster and will be at least as nice.

I got some great pic sleeve (the vinyl is pretty well mint) French issues from the 60s amongst some other 45 RPM Stones stuff. Picked them up by sheer fluke a coupla years ago. I just loved the picture sleeves so I bought them.

A couple of favourites from my collection.

I have them all, US/UK 'cept of course for SFM and Beast picture sleeves.

Did anyone get the Winning Ugly picture sleeve?

Another interesting one is the Let's Spend the Night Together release from 1982 I think.

Also the slew of rereleases including Paint it Black and JJF and Brown Sugar in the 90s.

I think my rarest is the Heart of Stone picture sleeve, and the very first "Come On" release with the "MT" tax code.

I have a couple of original pressings from the 60s: among which are Not Fade Away, 19th, Mother's Little Helper, and I think my EPs Rolling Stones, 5By5 and Got Live are originals also.

I have only a couple 45's that used to be my Dad's. Vinyl has not been an area that I've focused on, I will admit. I have most everything that's been released on CD, with about 15-20 items missing (mostly some promo CD Singles/album promos) - that was always my focal point. Whatever was available on Disc. However, over the last couple of years, I have thought about getting vinyl editions of all of their albums, which can get very pricey as well!!! I have VERY few that I have bought so far - the Beggars 50th anniversary and the Honk triple vinyl (I think it's triple) are about it so far.

Knowing how much all the vinyl albums are, and how much I've spent on the CD portion of it all, I don't think I'd ever expand to the 45's, too!!

These are the picture sleeves I have for the 60's singles:

It's All Over Now
Time Is On My Side
The Last Time
Satisfaction
As Tears Go By
19th Nervous Breakdown
Paint It Black
Mother's Little Helper
Have You Seen Your Mother Baby?
Let's Spend The Night Together/Ruby Tuesday
Dandelion/We Love You
She's A Rainbow
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Honky Tonk Women

Whats with Beast of Burden picture sleeve? I think I have one but it cannot be rare. Was there a special edition or something?

Never mind, I just went through my 7"s and I see I was thinking of Start Me Up with the hairy hoof on the sleeve. I do have BoB single but it is a Japanese release. Still wouldn't mind hearing whatever the story is with BoB though.

Yes...Winning Ugly was a Canadian release...hard to get.
The promo single for Let´s Spend.." und "Start Me Up" was
issued with a printed cover...which I´m still looking for.

I didn't realize SFM got reissued in that withdrawn cover! Another one on the list!

I do have the SG set so I guess I have that one after all...what the heck is that lion doing to that woman, and I take it that is not the same lion as on BTB? Or maybe it is an earlier photograph, when he is presumably still whole?

I just went and checked for SFM on ebay. Totally illustrates the problem with collecting Rolling Stones singles. Do you have ANY idea how many sleeves that record has been issued with? It is incredible and many of the sleeves are really kool. You could fill a record crate with all of them. Unbelievable!

Yes, a good one.
And there I found it: It was 7"x7" promo card, not the cover:

I think that Winning Ugly was released as a 12" single in the UK.

Personalty I think 12" are fun to collect too!Interesting versions/ mixes too that you don't t get elsewhere.

Brown Sugar was also released as a single to promote REWIND. What's odd is that the Miss You singles all say SOME GIRLS instead of REWIND.
