Sometime in 2006 a friend sent me this recording from someone he knew in Auckland New Zealand, I was told it was one off from the master tape.
Unfortunately, for some reason this recording is incomplete but on the upside it does contain the only complete version of Pool Hall Richard from this tour.
That song gave me problems with my two Faces Sydney recordings, I ran out of tape at the first Sydney show just before the encore & at the 2nd Sydney show the tape ran out near the end of this song.
Auckland was the first show of the 1974 Australasian Tour.
Try as I could I wasn’t able to find any info, photos, reviews regarding this one-off Faces New Zealand show.
From Rod’s comments it seems that this show took place in daylight as he refers "Ah, I wish I had your suntan. You look a healthy load of people. I haven't seen faces like that since the war."
And later just before ‘I Wish It Would Rain' he says “This is for everyone still sitting in the sun”.
The front cover artwork is the cover of the Australia 1974 Tour Program.
This montage was also used for the inside record sleeve of the Faces Live LP Coast To Coast.
The Red & Black Paul Dainty Faces Australasian Tour advertisements are also from the Tour Program.
The back artwork is the Australian Faces 1974 Poster by Ian McCausland who also designed the famous 1973 Stones Australian Tour poster.
I usually hate audience members talking loudly during shows, but if it’s occurs during encore breaks I don’t mind & this recording has some dead set funny comments between the taper & his mates such as “Can’t wait till the beer cans are on the stage, wait till everyone starts chucking beer cans” and “there go the beer cans”.
You can just hear the metallic sound of the beer cans hitting the stage.
This must be a Kiwi ritual during the encore break as the bloke mentioned it before it happens.
Then some sort of audience aggro starts because he states, kicked in the face, followed by he deserves it.
Auckland 1974 quality wise is one of the best 1974 Faces audience recordings which makes even more upsetting that it is incomplete.
This show has been out on silver boot CD 'Long White Cloud' on the Evacuation label plus as various CD-Rs but this remastered, pitch & speed correction version makes those versions obsolete.
Thanks to Swayed the taper & to audiowhore for the 2019 Remaster
Enjoy,
Waz"
