With all due respect to those who appreciate mp3's, let me explain to the young ones why mp3's are frowned upon by the trading community.

First off, mp3 is now an obsolete storage method. Amazon recently announced they will no longer sell mp3's. Storage costs are down significantly and large storage capacity is easily had by all. Portable music players now offer hi-res at very reasonable prices. So mp3's are about as relevant as 8-track tapes.

There are many file sharing sites that frown upon mp3's so badly that you will be banned from their sites. Dime, TTD, Echoes Hub, Lossless Legs, etree, the former Hunger City, and many others.

Also, there are a lot of people in the trading community who put a lot of effort into cleaning the trading pool and making sure we have the highest quality material as close to the source as possible. Releasing mp3's into the trading community goes against all the work that these good people have been doing for years to make sure we have the highest quality material in circulation.

Mp3's are fine if that's what you want for your own listening devices. But trading mp3's is the cardinal sin in the file sharing community.

The video equivalent of mp3's are VCD's. Is anybody sharing VCD's on DELETED
? Or anywhere? I have hundreds of them if anyone wants them posted. But what's the point? Oh yea, you can download them faster, and you can store them using less space!!

So if anyone is using the faster download and less storage logic with mp3's, then where are all the VCD's being shared? You would save a hell of a lot of space converting all your video to VCD's and the downloads would be way faster, right?

Is this all my opinion? Yes. But, it is also my opinion that on a sunny day the sky is blue, and on a cloudy day the sky is grey. It's just reality. It's the most common, basic guideline of any good trading community. So I don't want to hear from the usual suspects about their freedoms being violated. THIS IS FILE SHARING BASICS!! FILE SHARING 101!! IT'S THE NUMBER ONE RULE OF FILE SHARING!! KEEP IT LOSSLESS!!! And I honestly can't believe that I have to point this fact out to people here and that it's a topic of discussion or argument.

mp3 is low fidelity (crap sound where the highs and lows are shaved of to make smaller files. mp3s about portability (how many can fit on an iPod).

Music is about beautiful sound, so why have a file type that the sound isn't very good?
