Captain Acid qestion about MSG June 26th 1975
Posted by: CaptainAcid ()
Date: November 22, 2018 18:06

Hi gang,

yeah that will be the next remaster, but i have a question.
I have 3 versions, first one is by Rocking Rott, another is by JEMS ( the best one, but incomplete ) and third one, that is called "Complete". Second and third i got from dcba ( thanks again )......and also i have VGP version, incomplete.

Does anybody know did they play Wild Horses and Sympathy For The Devil on that show?
I am asking because they are on Rocking Rott version, but are missing from that so called "Complete" tape.

I have checked at Zentgraf site, and they are also missing from the set list.

So, anybody who's been there, and still remembers? smoking smileygrinning smiley

On my Stero-Baby RSVP-007 are Wild Horses and SFTD from 27.06.
My Rocking Rott 26.06. is no Wild Horses but yes SFTD.

On my version of Rocking Rott, Wild Horses is second track on CD 2, strangely enough it is not mentioned on the artwork

I have a new info, it seems that Rocking Rott Keith Can Sing Again is mislabeled, it is not 26th but 24th. Thanks to dcba for the research.
So i guess that solves the mystery, they did not play Wild Horses on 26th

Fact : Keef had a terrible toothache during the MSG residency, which prevented him from singing "Happy" during the June 24&25 shows.
On June 24 right before "Wild Horses" Mick exclaimed "Keef can't sing" and indeed the guitarist didn't sing backing vocals on that one during the June 24&25 shows.

it would be logical to think they skipped WH altogether on June 26 - because Mick thought it sounded too hollow without Keef's back vox? - but on June 26 the guitarist was fit enough to sing "Happy" so that's not logical.

Methinks they just forgot to play "Horses".

"maybe remaster some other show from MSG?"

Yeah the June 24 show in its VGP-305 incarnation sounds pretty ugly (thin and metallic).

100% positive! I checked a few markers that are on the Rocking Rott release, they match the tape that's on VGP-305 but none of them can be found on the JEMS recording of June 26.
The final proof is the bit of Jagger comment that's between "Angie" and "Wild Horses" : the "Keef can't sing" remark is on both Rocking Rott and VGP-305. it's not on JEMS.
I'd say (jokingly) that the Rocking Rott release should be retitled "Keith Will Sing Again... In Two Days". winking smiley

I'm a bit hesitant to discuss this with you dcba;
because you know these things usually better than I do!

First off: I don't have the original Rocking Rott release, only got the files from someone in the States.
My marker is after YCAGWYW: Jagger says that New York is a "marvellous town";
same remark on "my" Rocking Rott and on JEMS and in the Words Of Wonder book for June 26th.

But I have just started to download "Keith Can Sing Again" from the Stonesvault, will take a few hours...

I put it on WT for you...
The main clue is the "Lady jane" bit on both releases (RR and VGP) and the fact that you can hear a guy obsessively shouting "Live With me!!!" all through the show!
I hope he lived long enough to see to attend the 1994 tour! grinning smiley

If I may peep [as they would say in my beloved France] up, in my 50+ years of following entertainers and entertainment in the modrun sense, never, ever, have I read or heard of any professional being plagued by toothache to the point that they couldn't perform.

Hi Erik! (we miss you here...)
Here at IORR someone ventured to say it was because of the constant projection of firecrackers toward the stage...

I thought it was because Keef had been up for too long and was too tired. That was the case for at least one of the shows, I remember reading somewhere. Probably Rolling Stone magazine, wh. in those days was the only accurate account of anything to do wiv Mick, Billie, and the other Girls.

That's a possibility or they thought the audience was lame despite the hot performance delivered... "Sod this lot! Let's go to the hotel and party!" grinning smiley

Imo it's a great show and it reminds me of Led Zep's 1977-06-21 L.A. roaring gig which is revered among LZ fans because it comes after a San Diego half-@ssed gig two days before where Bonzo was sick. In L.A. Bonham had fully recovered and you can hear an "unleash the lion" effect on this 1977-06-21 show (plus it was taped by Mike Millard so it has great audio).
Replace Bonzo with Keef and you have the same "I'm back to form and ready to kick @ss" feel to the 1975-06-26 gig.

TornAndFrayed (mjake) notes:

Dug this one out of the bin yesterday and enjoyed listening to it so I thought I´ll post it here...

I received this rare tape in a trade long ago and it´s different from the incomplete and near-excellent source found on "Missing Jewels".
The recording sounds a bit distant, slightly muffled and distorted but it´s well balanced and pretty listenable. Still, I would only recommend this to diehard fans and completists because the overall quality is average at best. Please check the samples before downloading.
There are a few cuts (mostly between songs) but this should be the most complete source available for this date.
I think (part of) this recording had been posted here before in inferior quality but I´m not sure.

This was the second to last show of a six-nights-in-a-row stand at MSG and IMO, this - along with the final night the next day - is the best performance of them. Jagger is slightly hoarse but the band´s playing (Keith in particular) is great throughout.
