HELP: Saving/Downloading Radio Specials
Posted by: frenki09 ()
Date: October 20, 2017 15:50

Hi, Everyone,

I'd like to save a few radio shows, broadcasts into my PC. Some websites have the option to download or listen to the radio shows, while others only have the 'Listen/Play' option.

Does anyone have any recommendations how to record/save shows which do not have the 'Download' option?

For example, I'd like to add these shows to my collection of radio broadcasts:

The Band Radio Special:
[Musical History]

Or these very nice Jimi Hendrix Radio Broadcasts:
[Hendrix]

Any suggestions? All help is appreciated.

I have Windows 10 running in my laptop.

Frankie

a simple but good "record the sound you hear":

sound recorder

watchit!!
as with all 'free' software:
while installing the software,
uncheck/refuse unrelated offers!

when installed, click the options button and
choose output format [eg mp3] and his settings.

that's all, you'r ready to go

The Band Radio Special:
(WT link valid until October 27th)
[we.tl]

I first tried "Video Downloader" but only got chunks.
Not feeling well and unable to think clear, I immediately went for the heavy stuff and made a screencapture of the whole show. I converted the resulting mp4 file to wav -> flac afterwards.

You can also use Audacity to record audio only and then safe in the format you want (wav 16 bit, Wav 32 bit, flac, mp3, AIFF....), works with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.
Here you can find some info:

how to record sound from the internet

It might be a little confusing to find the drop down menus to change to recording mode, so here are some screenshots, the first with the normal configuration, the others for the recording configuration and the last 8 how to safe your recording..
My version is in Dutch, but you shouldn't have any problems understanding which buttons to click for the dropdown menus.
(on your first try it might be good to record 10 seconds and then replay to see if all is OK (to go back to "play mode", just change the Windows ASAPI back to NME)

Normal:

Things to change for recording:

(choose Windows ASAPI)

Thanks for the recommendation!

I downloaded the Free Sound Recorder. AVG antivirus did not allow me to install it and deleted the file. It said the software is infected with malware (ads, additional unwanted software etc.). But finally I found a malware-free version. After installing it there was no Stereo Mix in Recording Device drop-down menu, only Microphone. I did a search and found a YouTube video explaining how to get the Stereo Mix, so now I have two options: Microphone and Stereo Mix.

It records the radio broadcast when it is set to Stereo Mix, however the equalizer (in the top left window) shows nothing during recording or before recording. (When it is set to Microphone the equalizer works.) I hope I can make the equalizer work. I will need to do more search on that.

If anyone else decides to install this software, make sure that it is free of maleware!

J.B. Goode! Thanks for the help!

Oh, Chris!

You are truly great! Unbelievable how much you help IORR community! Greatly appreciated!

Thank you for the screenshots and all the info! Really great job! Very detailed. I will definitely try your method. I already downloaded Audacity.

And thanks for recording and sharing The Band Radio Special. I can't thank you enough!

....finally I found a malware-free version
....how to get the Stereo Mix....
....the equalizer (in the top left window) shows nothing during recording or before recording

okay, let's look at all settings:

enable stereo mix

right-click the audio icon in the system tray go to “recording devices”

in the pane, right-click on a blank area make sure both options are checked
“view disabled devices” & “view disconnected devices”

right-click “stereo mix” and click “enable”

right-click “stereo mix” and click set as default device

how to use

open up freerecorder

click #1 “show mixer window”
#2 the mixer shows up
#3 in “recording device” dropdown menu: select “stereo mix”
#4 adjust the volume here high up [here 95]

#5 click options', specify settings “options” – “general settings”
1 choose an output format
2 click “settings” and use the presets or specify the parameters to adjust the recording quality.
3 click “change” to select an output folder

record

test recording:
click the “record” button to activate the online music recorder
now start playing a show

you can
change the input level

in two ways:
adjust the volume of the show and/or
adjust the volume of your computer volume
which to choose, or combining the two, depends on the quality of the show.

when setting are done, stop the test.

record:
click “start recording” to start.
click “stop recording” to stop.

export the recording
the recording will be output to the output folder & listed in the file list with detailed information.
you can play the recording with the built-in player

btw
just curious: where did you find the malware-free version?

You don't have any way of knowing for sure that the software is "free of malware" unless it is open source software and you can examine the source code.

Anyway,I would trust "Audacity" much more. "Audacity" has versions for other operating systems. Not just Windows.

J.b.goode

I think I found the seemingly malware-free version here (at least AVG let me install it):
[FAR]

Earlier I said that after finding the missing Stereo Mix I was able to make a recording. I was wrong. The sound I recorded came via the speakers and was picked up by the built-in microphone. I mistakenly thought Stereo Mix actually works, but it doesn't.

I followed your very clear and detailed instructions, still Stereo Mix does not work for me. I've no idea why. It must be a setting problem somewhere. Too bad, because this little software looked promising.

I tested Chris's suggestion and that worked just fine!

I will see if I can find anything on the net about how to fix my problem with the Stereo Mix option.

Thanks for the help and comments!

thanks for the feed-back! thumbs up

i see: your malware-free recorder comes from the filehippo site.
they put this hassle-free version on their own download site.
thumbs up for filehippo.

if stereo mix is enabled and set as default,
recording device is set to stereo-mix,
volume is adjusted.....
it should work. now i'm out of suggestions to get it working....

i think audacity is a bit too much for your needs
[that is: record non downloadable radio broadcasts/specials].
but if audacity works fine for you,
it's the program to deal with. it's free, open source,
and it's is good at what is does:
perform basic audio editing and format transfers.

i would say: stay with it because it works for you.

good luck and have fun!
