Nie gift for X-mas! thumbs up
We'll soon see if it's an upgrade over the old VGP-009 title.

EDIT : to my ears it's not. It's very close to the VGP title (same tape, same level of hiss) except it's much louder : I guess this DCA was "hot" mastered.
It makes it hard to listen to at times : the music turns into an unpleasant mass of noise (imo).

Have just listened to this boot, don't think it is that bad as dcba thinks it is.
It is louder, yes, but it is not brickwalled!

I also downloaded the Exile version from the StonesVault ( thanks! ), now that is brickwalled for sure!

Two questions:

1.: Regarding the Exile boot I got from here:

[iorr.org]

despite Flac files, it is lossy. Is the Exile boot made from lossy files or is it a kind of mistake in the StonesVault?

2.: Are there two sources for the Vienna show?

That may be well possibel.
I only mastered checkig for lossless past summer.
Guess I know the answer already when checking this Exile file bcause of your note here.
I will check anyway.

Hi Jaap!

Thanks again.

I hope I did not sound ungrateful!
But I thought you should know!
And we don't know yet, it might be the boot is made from lossy files??
Wouldn't be the first boot made from mp3s!

I was able to get the info I needed: the Exile boot is mixed far too loud!
I think I had the faint idea in the back of my mind, that many Exile boots are mixed that way!

I haven't the faintest idea.

Indeed a sudden drop in frequensis, but it stil keeps running towards 20.000kHz.
So yes a sudden drop, but it is not cut off at that point.

It refers to the use of a limiter (compressor) on the master, making sure it won't go above 0db.

It was only yesterday, that I deleted the Exile boot files from my pc...

I would like to check again, but Filefactory does not want me to download at the moment. I will wait.

Meanwhile some info on the brickwalled sound and the loudness war:

Well I use the word in a "broad" sense referring to any CD (boot or official) where the music suffers from extensive and unnecessary use of computer tools that should improve the listening experience but in fact don't.
The main trick is making the music louder as if it had more punch more presence.
To me it always gives awful results as it turns the music into a metallic mess and it squashes the dubtle dynamics (loud quiet loud) of a recording. Ait makes everything louder it also makes tape hiss louder therefore the use of noise gate becomes necessary, making the music even worse.

Japanese boot labels are known for using that trick especially the ones that deal with Led Zep recordings.

V2 "VGP 009 Goodnight Vienna" is not a VGP issue. Even if it looks almost like this. Look at the artwork, especially the backcover.
