RS 1981 "Supergroups in Concert" pre-FM
Posted by: andrews27 ()

I wish some nice collector would put up (anywhere) a torrent of the 1981 RS tour compilation "Supergroups In Concert," from the pre-FM vinyl or from a quality tape. This is a great compilation, something like an expanded "Still Life."

The 3-LP set has been sold on e-bay and elswhere lately, but I missed my opportunities to buy.

VGP put out a 2-CD dub of this show, but it's made from a bad cassette copy that goes muddy in the middle:

Well, "I missed it" is, unfortunately, code for "I'm broke." Glad there are copies around, though.

Here's some info on a 20 track triple LP compilation of the 1981 tour that was made and broadcasted round the same time:

Hi,

For a long while I collected and studied King Biscuit Flower Hour - Rolling Stones 1981. There were several broadcast of the Rolling Stones 1981 live material.Without looking-up specifics, I can tell you that there were two 'waves' of Rolling Stones 1981 Live material. The first wave was in the early-mid 1980s. The second 'wave' (series of broadcasts) were after 1989.

Many of the tracks are different from the first set of broadcasts compared to the second set.

Many common mistakes happen when identifying these KBFH 1981 broadcasts. One broadcast people assume the show is from New Jersey since the announcer says, "New Jersey." One particular track you'll notice "Under My Thumb" playing as the announcer is introducing the band. Then "Under My Thumb" is cut and then starts again. That's because the introduction from the announcer was in New Jersey and the first song, "Under My Thumb" was not from the same show.

I can't remember all of the details but there is two of each:

Under My Thumb (NJ & Detroit)
Shattered (Hampton & 1978)
20 Flight Rock (Hampton & Detroit)
Going to a Go-Go (Detroit and Hampton)
Time is on my Side
Start Me Up

There's only one each of:

Let It Bleed (Louisiana)
Waiting on a Friend (Detroit)
She's So Cold
Hang Fire
Let Me Go
Beast of Burden (Chicago)
Just My Imagination (Hampton)

The first wave of 1981 broadcast had the more rare tracks from Detroit and there were 1978 tracks used as well.

The bootlegs that came out with the original KBFH tracks usually went under the names of "On Top of Old Smokey,""Mission Direct Hits" and "Black Limousine." Later DAC-069 was named Mission Direct Hits even though it came out just a few years ago.

A great collection of the older KBFH tracks come on "Ride Like the Wind" (Rattlesnake) four CD set.

The original broad casts included Detroit's "Under My Thumb."

There's only one "Let's Spend the Night Together" which is from Hampton on all of the KBFH 1981 broadcast and "Still Life." The KBFH "Let's Spend the Night Together" is at a different speed than than on "Still Life's" "Let's Spend the Night Together."

The original broadcast had more banter from Mick with the audience talking about the Silver Dome and coming down from Canada before "Let's Spend the Night Together." There's other dialog that was lost with the post 1989 KBFH broadcasts.

The more rare 1981 KBFH tracks were also gone. Never again did we get "Under My Thumb" from Detroit, Detroit "Go-Go," "Time is on My Side" or Waiting on a Friend. The great 1978 "Shattered" wasn't used anymore in the 1981 broadcasts.

Also on the second wave, post 1989 broadcasts songs were added from "Still Life" and from Hampton such as "Miss You," "Time is on my Side."

From memory...I think "Honky Tonk" from 1978 and the rest of the 1978 songs which ended the early series/first wave broadcasts.

Another big disappointment was the loss of one of the very best songs from the tour "Waiting on a Friend."

A few ways to spot the first set of 1981 broadcasts is to see if it has "Waiting on a Friend" which is a very good indicator that the 1981 KBFH show is not post 1989, second wave of KBFH 1981 broadcast. It forever changed in 1989.

Another great song that did make it to the new series of broadcasts was "Let It Bleed." A great performance! "Waiting on a Friend" back-to-back with "Let It Bleed" was an awesome running order for the faux radio concert.

The older broadcast that we got on bootleg CD in the early to mid 1980's, were very good quality but not the highest quality as compared to CD technology of post 1989.

I listened to:

Tracklisting / Additional Info:
1. Under My Thumb
2. Beast of Burden
3. Let’s Spend the Night Together
4. Shattered
5. Black Limo
6. 20 Flight Rock
7. Goin' To A Go-Go
8. You Can't Always Get What You Want
9. Let Me Go
10. Time Is On My Side
11. Let It Bleed
12. Just My Imagination
13. She's So Cold
14. Hang Fire
15. Miss You
16. Start Me Up
17. Jumpin' Jack Flash
18. Satisfaction

This is a great representation of 1981 Rolling Stones American concert! It's a great album. "JJ Flash" is very cool and it's not 1978 like the early broadcasts. I guess it's from Hampton.

The set list above is later-second wave KBFH without the more rare tracks. Like someone said, It's an extended "Still Life." It's more "Still Life"/"Hampton" than the true KBFH tracks that didn't make it on to "Still Life."

If anyone wants to identify where each track came from, for sure, it would help to even improve this concert.

The question for me always was, "Do we want an extended "Still Life" or the KBFH tracks. The problem with KBFH is that there's no end of the concert since they use 1978 tracks. It works well because 1978 was a faster-paced show than the later 1981 shows.

The trick to knowing what we have from King Biscuit Flower Hour is to identify each track. I had it all figured-out and written and it was all lost. I had all of the markers, etc... The 1978 Shattered has a little feed back in the middle of the middle part.

Just compare "Ride Like the Wind" to the listing above to see two different versions of the 1978 radio shows. "Start Me Up" with the castanets. KBFH (Superstar Concert Series), it's all the same tracks.

I really like the set list above. I downloaded this offering (thanks) but it didn't come out in 1982 or 1983. This is from the second series of 1981 live rolling Stones radio concerts.

In 1989 KBFH moved "Beast of Burden" to song number two probably because it was a popular song in the USA and some person probably thought it would have a stronger start to the show.

"Beast of Burden" in slot number two clearly shows this broadcast was not from the original series of broadcast, therefor the rest of the tracks are no either. Also "waiting on a Friend" missing is another clear indicator that the radio concert is from the original series of broadcast from 1982-1983.

It would be a good idea for a project to use all of the 1981 KBFH tracks for two concerts, a first wave as broadcasted in 1982 and the later series of broadcasts.

First to identify each track. Should be easy since I basically spelled it our where to look for every thing.

Make the newer concert, the "Extended Still Life." Identify all tracks from the set list in the first post which was shared in private emails. Then see if there are better sounding tracks from those performances. Now we have more resources than when all of the past bootlegs were offered. In recent years we had Hampton and Detroits.

Then identify each track from "Ride Like The Wind" and "On Top of Old Smokey" VGP-280 which contains I think all of the older broadcasted tracks.

We have to compare the sound to everything that is available. Then we could have the best sounding KBFH tracks and all of the KBFH 1981 tracks in one folder/set without duplicates (except for "Waiting on a Friend" and a few others.

Thanks for your elaborate and informative response exilestones.

Bootlegs using material of the early KBFH broadcast (presumably broadcast on march 19, 1983):

Mission Direct Hits (VGP-247)
Mission Direct Hits (S&U Music House)
On Top Of Old Smokey (AT-81)
On Top Of Old Smokey (VGP-280)
Black Limousine (Lobster Records)

Bootlegs that feature an 'extended Still Life':

Time Is On Our Side (VGP-038)
Ride Like The Wind (VGP-290)
Time Is On Our Side (TSP)

According to Dieter Hoffmann's 'Schwarzbuch' a vinyl bootleg featuring the 'extended Still Life' assembly of KBFH track was released as early as 1984 (Ride Like The Wind).

I have a download of VGP-290, Ride Like the Wind, without artwork. The version I have sounds like it was dubbed from a cassette recording of the FM, and the sound gets duller in the last three songs on CD-1.

Yes, I do remember that the earlier KBFH version mixed songs from 1978 and 1981 - I used to have my own cassette of that recorded from the broadcast. My recollection is that "Miss You" and the War Horse numbers (BS, JJF) were from 1978.

Sounds right, thanks.

Thanks, exilestones, for the scholarship andf pix.

It wouldn't be bad if, in the Stones Jubilee Year, torrents of the old radio recordings returned, including Brussels/London 1973 as heard on KBFH.

The Rolling Stones
Time Is On Our Side
A Vinyl Gang Production
VGP—038 Second Edition

VGP used the same artwork as for the 1st version, therefore Miss You is not listed.

VGP used the artwork of the old Swingin' Pig vinyl 2 LP set which was TSP-CD-018. Therefore it looks like a Swingin' Pig release but it isn't. It's the same as with other old VGPs where they remade old vinyl artworks including their labels. E. g. "Europe 73" (Royal Sound), "Nasty Music" (SODD), "Preserve For Future" & "Discover New York" (Northern Records) etc.

There are 2 versions of this VGP release. While the old vinyl was a double LP. VGP's release is only one CD. Therefore they omitted Shattered and Miss You on their first edition (silver "TSP" label). On the second edition (black "Vol. 038" label) only Shattered is missing, Miss You is included now. However, as often, they did not change the artwork, so Miss You is also not listed on the 2nd edition.

Concerning the Time Is On Our Side 2LP vinyl on TSP from 1982 it should be noted that it is a direct copy of the Westwood One pre-FM vinyls, unlike the VGP CD "re-release", which is from a recording of the actual broadcast.

Isn't most or all material from Wolfgang's Vault lossy streaming audio? Haven't made and in depth comparison of all sources for these KBFH tracks but if the VGP titles are remastered and/or recorded of the air, a direct transfer from the Pre-FM LP's would be an upgrade.

Sure, if you consider an overdubbed and mutilated track an upgrade over the complete version, even if it's "lossy" (which you only become aware of because you know it) ...

If there are alternate versions/edits the comparison becomes even more interesting. :-) Does anybody know if all these KBFH tracks have surfaced on WV?

@midnrambler:

A lot of us have the original shows that the KBFH and other radio tracks are taken from, whether in SBD or audience. I probably have it all by now. It's nice, though, to have the radio broadcasts as collections and for their historical appeal - including the overdubbing and announcements. Sometimes it's nice to hear what turned you on many years ago when you didn't know better and didn't have better.

4 VGP releases, each radio show twice, 1x 1CD (incomplete) and 1x 2CD (complete):
And don't forget: Almost all tracks are meanwhile available uncut and unoverdubbed on Wolfgang's Vault so all these radio shows are quite unnecessary now.

Thanks for the list of which radio shows VGP put out - nice work1

I wouldn't go trowing out the KBFH Radio Concerts. I think King Biscuit did a great job of putting concerts together. The more I studied these radio shows, I came to realize that they're great.

Wolfgang has whole real concerts. King Biscuit has hand-picked tracks to make-up a show. Probably the better tracks. They may be more pleasurable to listen to the any particular show (Although Detroit Dec 1st is awesome).

When I sorted-out which tracks were available from the KBFH broadcasts, I was curious as to why there were only a few songs from a few shows. I'm guessing that all of the KBFH tracks made it to the next to final selection of tracks for "Still Life." There are some great tracks here.

If wolfgang is better sound, idk (I don't know), I can tell you the mix is a lot different. Wolfgang has a lot more separation than KBFH. I like the finished product that we get from KBFH.

Wolfgang is MP3. Not sure how the fidelity is compared to KBFH CDs and LPs. As I said, it's a whole new mix.

a direct transfer from the Pre-FM LP's would be an upgrade...

Some of these boots sound great an maybe a 'pre-fm?' Did we ever get the earliest broadcasts that had most of the Detroit tracks, Pre-FM? I don't think so.

One of the problems with the older titles "Black Limousine" and "Mission Direct Hits" (beside that I don't think they are Pre-Fm) is that the sound of older CDs is as high quality sonically as CDs from the 1990's on. Again, a Pre-FM of the older set list is needed.

I don't think the 1978 KBFH tracks are available in the vault.

Does anybody know if all these KBFH tracks have surfaced on WV?

Midnrambler is saying that we have the whole concerts from these tracks. I guess implying that the quality is very good too, which the quality is very nice.

It's nice, though, to have the radio broadcasts as collections and for their historical appeal - including the overdubbing and announcements.

I like the announcer usually. It adds excitement and like you say, nostalgia.

...alternate versions/edits the comparison becomes even more interesting.

That's one thing I loved about the early King Biscuit Shows, like Andrews27 said, "an expanded "Still Life." And an alternate Still Life; "Go-Go," "Time is on My Side," "20 Flight Rock." ect..

The earlier broadcast was all of the "Still Life" tracks and Hampton's Miss You.

The problem is that the post 1989 KBFH were much better sound and we never got the Detroit with KBFH mix again. We were lucky to get "Let It Bleed" in a later broadcast but never "Waiting on a Friend" or Black Limousine. I searched high and low for a great sounding KBFH "Waiting on a Friend."

Another issue is the overdubbed audience on the 1983 release. It's nice sound "On Top of Old Smokey" (VGP-280) but I think we could have better with a vinyl rip. To pick-out the best sounding KBFH "Waiting on a Fried," I suggest you listen to Ron's fast leads during the sax solo (4:20-4:45).
