I have only heard bits and pieces of the Fonda, but getting something 'mastered for iTunes it seems to mean if you play it thru anything but your cheap computer speakers or earbuds the sound is tinny and thin. I would love to hear what it sounds like properly mixed and mastered for a CD release.

Very good performance in this case. Better than I could have ever expected from a band that was nearly 53 years into their career at that point.

This recording is begging for a better mix / master.

I burnt it on CD using a little crossfade to avoid the microgaps and can´t see any reason for a remastered version. It sounds very good. The sound isn´t tinny and thin at all. Even converted it to mp3 for portable device and it still sounds great.

It has quite a limited dynamic range.

The files were originally and,to this point, exclusively released in an m4a container with a lossy compressed format used by Apple .... aac which is not that much different from mp3. The main difference between aac and mp3 is file size. There's not much,if any difference in sound quality between mp3 and aac given the same or similar bit-rate.

Neither can favorably compare to a lossless format but, that is not the only problem here. The mix / master is also likely to blame. The dynamic range should not be this low even with a lossy file format. The recording is clear, though and a great performance on all but a couple of songs.

I don't know anymore where I got it, but I have a version (with the 10 songs, no more), with the following Audacity Spectrum analysis:

You can have a better sound with audacity , with some effects (compression, bass, trebble )

Mastered for iTunes means the Apple lossy files (aac) were created from a hi-res master. Theorically the high frequencies - typically chopped off when creating a lossy file - are better handled with a "mastered for iTunes" file. But in practice a mastered for iTunes file sounds about the same as any average mp3 encoded file: thin and shallow. That's why I think Mfit is just another gimmick from Apple.

Edit:
From What is mastering in 2016 :

"The main thing a mastering engineer is looking for when “Mastering For iTunes” is that after the encoding, there are no digital overs or clipping present in the encoded file. What some people don’t realize is that encoding a WAV to mp3, AAC, and other compressed formats will change (increase) the peak levels of an audio file."

And the best medicine.

OK, while we're on the topic, there are frequent listings on eBay entitled "Rolling Stones" magazine, but it's actually the world-famous "Rolling Stone" magazine. Do a search on eBay - plenty of examples always come up. OK, so we're all grown-up sophisticated Stones aficionados and purists here at I-ORR. Oops, make that "IORR". Only the best will do, right? Who goes thumbs up (yay!) and who goes thumbs down (boo!) to this frequent "careless" mistake? Maybe I can now say "QED" to the whole matter. Maybe? Cancel that. I'm saying it right now. Yeah, precisely what we need is an official release of the entire Fonda Theater show, on DVD and CD. Time waits for no one, boys.
