Post RS 1971.03.06 Coventry
Posted by: stonesmuziekfan ()

I did get a request for Coventry because most availabel files in blogs are lossy.

There are two files in Stonesvault;
VGP-095 1971.03.06 Coventry Farewell Tour 1971.rar 280MB
[www.filefactory.com]
DAC 071 1971.11.07 and 1971.03.06 1st Don't You Wanna Live With Me, Ft. Collins Coventry.rar 386MB
[www.filefactory.com]
And I know there are also Marko remasters for these two.

Than I searched my files and did find these three;
RS 1971.03.06 COVENTRY THEATRE, Coventry, England 2nd show Tapesource 323MB
[www.filefactory.com]
RS 1971.03.06 Coventry early 326MB [www.filefactory.com]
RS 1971.03.06 Coventry low gen tape Watchit maybe 1st show 174MB [www.filefactory.com]

The Watchit tape flacs in my collection are from a lossy source.
Hereby my request to send me a lossless version for the Watchit tape, and when availabel please for the 1st and the 2nd show by Watchit.

Stonesmuziekfan,

Thank you for these files. Can you reply to this with the file you say has the best sound? I know the sound could best be described as more hideous than a Pret a Manger Full English, but any input would be appreciated.

Have we a solid and trusted source who has verified that indeed both Coventry shows are circulating?

I attended both the Coventry shows on 06/03/1971.
At the first show I sat in the stalls (in front of the stage) and at the evening show I sat in the circle (the first level up).
At the evening show they played "Prodigal Son". At the first show they did not play it.
I have only ever heard of one show being recorded and I believe that is the first (early) show, because it does not have "Prodigal Son" on it and also the audience is quiet compared to the evening (second) show which really rocked.
Hope this helps.

Kingbeebuzz, your input is very welcome and highly valued. I tried to listen to the watchit show but the sound is so awful I had to turn it off. But we have the new Sticky Fingers release to show us how on fire they were on that short tour. I count passing The Round House in Chalk Farm as one of the visual highlights of my life.

Would you happen to have any other version of Coventry in flac? The ones in The Vault, as Jaap noted, are modstly lossy sourced. Thanks.

The ones in The Vault, as Jaap noted, are mostly lossy sourced.

Imo it's a low-fi recording therefore it may appear as lossy becasue of the limited frequency range.
Personally I'm more concerned about the fact that the non-boot versions run too fast. For me it spoils the fun more than a lossy origin.

Re: Post RS 1971.03.06 Coventry

Yes, it might, but then again some other Stones shows from around the time and older (even if not perfect sounding) go over 20 000 khz... For Example the VGP shared here forom which Watchit is remastered does not have over 20 000 khz either here , but it goes higher than Watchit. So while cut off higher frequencies might be on the original recording, it is imo not truly lossless at all - not due to bad encoding or converting but because of the way it was recorded or remastered. It might be the least lossy version there is but not lossless in its essence.

In the info notes to his upload watchit says:

" I have attempted to improve the sound slightly, by rolling off the hiss... "

Maybe that is why there are no high frequencies??

It would be nice, if watchit could confirm, that this is his original upload.

No need for watchit confirmation. I have a .txt file with the upload on tape City.

If you scroll down, you will see that the original torrent by watchit had 175.78Mb
Same as one I have reuploaded on EL.

Cheers

This is a recording of the Rolling Stones in Coventry, England, March 6, 1971, on a short UK tour. After it, they left for France, where they famously recorded "Exile on Main Street." This recording is VG-, not very good, but there are only a handful of 1971 Stones to choose from. Of them, this is possibly their best performance.

This is an upgrade to VGP-095, "Farewell Tour Coventry 1971." It is lower generation than what was available to VGP at the time, but the same recording. I have attempted to improve the sound slightly, by rolling off the hiss and boosting levels here and there.

The Stones played two shows in Coventry on March 6. VGP says this is the second show. Nico Zentgraf's comprehensive site says it's the first. I have no idea.

Presented in FLAC 1.1.4, level 8. VGP's art is available at [www.rs-covers.com]

Gonzalo

I checked on Dime and only saw this one [www.dimeadozen.org] which is VGP's version.

This is not VGP's version, I got this in trade last year. It's better than VGP's but still not so good.

Your tape version is probably similar to what I have but won't exactly match mine since I reindexed it and slightly reduced the hiss.

Well, taking a quick look at your poor ratio, I don't think you'll share it anywhere.

Because this version sounds the best to my old ears, less distorted than VGP.

I did add (lossy source) in Stonesvault to the text of this file right behind ".rar" and removed it again, so any new downoad must be without any problem.

Jimmy Shelter's advise must be doing the trick.

In previous reply above is confirmed as Watchit's Original upload, so lossless.

Yeah but it's a tricky one. It starts okay (JJF's in B, damn emoticons) but it gets progressively faster. By SFM it's too fast by a semi-tone.

That's what I noticed too.
Just returned from my cd-player.
I compared to VGP;
Stray Cat Blues had to be slowed down by 1,5%
Midnight Rambler by 1,8%
these are the only ones I checked so far.

Could someone upload the speed corrected one?
Just FYI, i Checked the VGP Coventry from the Vault again, and It stops at 17 000 khz.Lossless usually goes over 20 000. Maybe such a version of this show does not exist due to the way it was recorded, but for better or for worse, VGP has more higher end than Watchit.

BTW, just checked EL, where I was discussing this/requesting an upload a version with full spectrum appeared - the same one as Stonesmuziek shared here - the unbooted one. I checked it earlier - sounds bad, but does have the full spectrum.
