POST: Ready-Steady-Go - It was 50 years ago today..
...on friday evening, Jan 15 1965, that I (a pimply 14 year-old) sat down in front of the tv. On a chair directly in front of the speaker was a microphone of the type that came with a domestic Phillips tape recorder of the era. The show I was recording was 'Ready Steady Go'.
The Rolling Stones were going to play. Live.
There were two shows on tv which supplied us with pop music at the time, Top of The Pops & RSG, the performers mimed to the current hits on both shows but eventually RSG had some performers play live in the studio. There must have been some historian deity invoking me to record these for posterity as, apparently (apart from The Last Time) no-one else did.
I recorded a total of 9 tracks this way between 1964-65, the 3 tracks from Jan 15 1965 were 'What a Shame', 'Time is on my Side' & 'Down the Road Apiece' & listening to them now, I believe they still hold up remarkedly well given the relatively crude recording technique.
I have previously posted these here as mp3s & was quite chuffed when DAC 'borrowed' them & put them on the compilation 'Animal Duds'. 'What a Shame' & 'Time is on my Side' also showed up on the 3cd set featuring the live Hamburg 1965 set which came out last year.
I've decided to commemorate by posting them again, but for the first time as flacs, to be honest, my 64 year old ears can't tell the difference but here they are anyway. I must admit to a certain amount of lump-in-the-throat nostalgia here, I mean, 50 years?
