06/23/72 'Dallas Rehearsals' Film Clip
Posted by: automaticchanger ()
Date: August 6, 2021 04:39

I just uploaded this to my YouTube channel and thought I'd share a download link here for anyone interested. These clips were featured in Episode 2 and 6 of the Apple TV series '1971: The Year Music Changed Everything'. Looks like it was shot by Robert Frank. There wasn't any native audio so I added one of the Dallas jams:

thumbs up

This snippet means that Jagger had all the 16mm material shot by Frank in 72 (and there's a lot of it!) preserved in the Vault and digitized (for future use?).

This is just bloody amazing!

I had a discussion with a 1972 tour connoisseur a month ago were we agreed there was no confirmed image of the Dallas rehearsals. Two weeks later it was confirmed that the pictures of Keith in a studio with the Gibson Firebird were actually from the Dallas Rehearsals, and now we get this footage! Fantastic!

Keith plays a 1965 Firebird, Taylor a Gibson SG with Lyre tremelo that I have never seen before with the Stones, and in the end you see Bobby Keys with Keith's 1953 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top.

A lot of it was used in Crossfire Hurricane, and some other stuff, like the Exile cover shoot, is in this Apple series as well.

Yes, the pictures were shot by Annie Leibovitz, you can see her behind Bill around 0:47. I posted this shot in one of the 'Studio Pics' threads about a year ago:

No way to know for sure if the Firebird was one of theirs (Keith's or Brian's) or something in the studio - it seems strange that they'd bring it along and never use it on stage, but then again that wouldn't be too surprising.

Thank you!

Interestingly enough the song titles "Stop Breaking Down" and "Loving Cup" are not listed on Nico Zentgraf's site...

That really is amazing!!! It does suggest there is a boatload of Robert Frank film sitting in a vault somewhere in pristine condition

Those have nothing to do with the clips, they're just part of the montages during the episodes.

IIrc when Frank completed CS Blues (around 75?) he was contractually compelled to hand the band all the raw footage (16mm camera and sound) he and Danny Seymour shot during the tour.
You would have thought Jagger junked the whole lot that had "bad juju" attached to it but apparently he kept it all.

Thanks!

While we're on the topic, may I PLEASE have a posed photo of the 1972 stage band?

I've been very patient.

Jim Price is missing but otherwise this one from the Burbank rehearsals seems to be as good as it gets for this request:

The extracts of CB shown in the Unzipped exhibition (in the Scorcese segment) are also in pristine condition. Well at least you can see a woman's behind and breasts in a plane... grinning smiley

By the way (not related to the boobs!) is the video available somewhere?

If you mean the CS-Blues video, it's in the vault:

Nicky Hopkins might have taken that second photo of the band. He was big into photography.

The band shot is by Annie Lebovitz so I imagine the second one is too, but I didn't know that about Nicky.

And Nicky on a fender Rhodes... never saw him playing, I always thought it was his Hohner Pianet

Thank you for the posted photos. Taken together, they give me a chance to place the greatest band to ever take a stage on the wall.

(Keep looking please)

On his Facebook page there were a couple of fantastic pictures he shot from behind his piano during the 1970 tour.
