IT TOOK ME a few weeks but I gladly share my summer 'while-it-was-raining' project.
Elsewhere I already shared my special and sentimental memories concerning the classic
vinyl release of the "Black Album", also know as "The Black-box" (and what have you!).##
After that awesum vinyl-rip of Silkcut1978, I started a little research into the origin
of each individual track, most notably those of the first two discs. Then I searched for
the best versions of all those tracks and remastered them all individually to enhance the
sound quality (if possible), speed adjust (if necessary) and to match them volume-wise
with the other tracks to obtain a somewhat coherent collection.
Obviously the sound quality of all those tracks vary a lot between them, but I do believe
that all tracks are upgraded from the vinyl release with the exception of two or three.
These tracks are:
1)'It Should Be You', version 1 (in fact this track was nowhere else to be found other then
on the "Black Album" itself - all other availlable versions are versions 2 with different
harmonies and a more 'moderate' vocal - so I simply took Silkcut's 'declicked' version from
his vinyl-rip).
2)'Play With Fire' from the "Shinding!" TV-show. Perhaps the best version is on "Du Fond Du Coeur"
but I only had this as mp3 (320kbs). Therefore I used the Silkcut-rip once again - the quality
is in fact quite similar to the "Du Fond Du Coeur"
(the mp3 is included in the "Xtras").3) 'Ruby Tuesday' (instr.) best version is - I think - on "Record Mirror" Vol.1 but, again,
I only have this as mp3 (228kbs) so again I used Silkcut's version.
WHAT EXACTLY 'best versions' are is arbitrary. Especially for the
"Rape Of The Vaults""Gravestones" ** part there is a lot room for discussion and other suggestions.
However, as I found this the least interesting disc (because all the outakes are indeed to be
found on many other releases), I just kinda went with what I got. Again, the basic idea was
to obtain a somewhat coherent collection that would represent that vintage "Black Album".
THE OTHER THING is that the "Black Album" has a lot of unique edits; basically, songs 'cut short'.
For the first two discs I inclueded those edits in a forth file called "Xtras (edits, full-tracks
and
mp3's 1 mp3)". As I prefered the special edits on the
"Rape Of The Vaults" "Gravestones"
discs (e.g. because full versions of 'Melody' and 'B&B Jam' are, in my opinion, better placed on
"Black & Blue Outtakes"), these 'full-tracks' (with the exception of B&B Jam) are also in the 'Xtras'.
The mp3's are only the mp3's that I didn't have as flac. This in case one wants to convert the
flacs to mp3 for personal use (and avoid unnecessary loss)SPECIFIED TRACK LISTING & NOTES (origin)

**[EDIT 2018]: SOME CONFUSION as to what would be considered the content of "Rape Of The Vaults",
and "Gravestones" from my part. The bootleg "Gravestones & Rape Of The Vaults" (Rolling Stones
Vinyl Product [R.S.V.P. 002 & 003]) suggests that the part that starts with 'Ain't That Loving You
Baby" is "Gravestones" and so "Rape Of The Vaults" would include 'All Down The Line. This' was at
least my assumption back in 2011, as dbboots has no individual track listings given for the
indivudal boots respectively.
HOWEVER, as was outlined by IORR members midnrambler, Eric_Snow and werther2003, my assumption
proved to be incorrect: the titles should be just the other way round - as per, Dieter Hoffmann
"Das Rolling Stones Schwarzbuch" (1st Edition 1987). This is corrected now.
OBVIOUSLY NOW IN 2018, most, if not all of these "recollected & remastered" versions have become
obsolete in terms of quality, but the representation of that legendary "Black Album" with all its
funny edits is still dear to me. I have included a full rundown of mp3's as to represent that
vintage track list.
Hope you will enjoy this remastered 'recollection' of "Black Album" tracks and the little research I have done.
Happy to 'roll' with the Stones - and thanks to vancouver, Greg and Thomas for their contributions!
Special thanks to Nico Zentgraf's "Complete Works", and Martin Elliot's "Complete Recording Sessions 1962-2002".
Cheers!
