Always loved this song. Might be my fave EJ tune. I like this version from Soul Train. Dig those clothes, dig that hair.

Fake live. Studio recording with audience sound effects.

Funny. I ADORE the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album and this is the ONLY song I never warmed up to. Ironically its the biggest hit from the record. And my brother thinks its one of the best on the album. Different strokes.

If you get a chance, try to catch the "Classic Albums" episode about the making of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Interesting to hear them discuss this track and to hear a bit of it without the "live" sounds.

My older sister and brother both owned Yellow Brick Road and most of it was played constantly on the radio at one point or another - I couldn't escape it!eye popping smileywinking smiley
Bennie and the Jets was and still is a standout for me (along with Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, All the Girls Love Alice, and the title track, etc.)...really the entire album as a whole is a total masterpiece imo. My wife and I saw Elton several years ago in Hawaii, and the most memorable moment was Davey Johnstone ripping the opening riff to Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting - he's one of the all around greatest guitar players ever imo.

edit: There was a time during that period for many kids my age to say they didn't like Elton John - that he was totally uncool - but I always liked his music even though I didn't always admit it to friends of mine lol.
After Yellow Brick Road though, his albums became a bit uneven give or take a few hits here and there, and songs like Don't Go Breaking My Heart and Island Girl were just a bit too poppy for my taste...

I found this ...

LONDON, Oct.1 (Wire Service) - After the recent "overwhelming" response
to the rededication and performance of his "Candle In The Wind" at the
funeral of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, pop singer Elton John has
remade another song from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

"Bennie And The Jets" is now "Diana And The Press."
===========================================================

DIANA AND THE PRESS

Sung to the tune of "Bennie And The Jets"

_____________________________________________________________________

Hey kids, the couple's not together
Diana tried to reach out but the Prince he wouldn't let her
We see it in the headlines now every day
You know the press is gonna make a killing now anyway

Say, Diana dating Dodi, have you seen them yet?
The news is that he drives her wild
D-D-D-D Diana and the Press
Oh, but she's real and she's wonderful
Diana she's really keen

She's got her Bally boots, Versace suits
You know I saw it in a magazine
D-D-D-D Diana and the Press

Hey kids, plug into the faithless
Maybe we're blinded
Diana makes us ageless
We shall survive, let us take ourselves along
When we lose all of our own sense of guilt and say who's right and who's wrong

Say, Diana did her duty, have you seen her yet?
The news is that it drove her wild
D-D-D-D Diana and the Press
Oh, but she was real and she was wonderful
Diana she was really keen

She's got her Bally boots, Versace suits
You know I saw it in a magazine
D-D-D-D Diana and the Press

Di, Di, Di, Diana and the Press

I've loved this song for several years, but had never heard a live version.

Then I heard this one from 1980.

Holy smoke!

What a performance! What piano playing! What great blow!

Who out there saw EJ in the 70s/early 80s? Tell us about it please!

‘82-‘84 Bennie was the best Bennie. Particularly with Elton setting off a looped note on his piano, sitting on it, playing from underneath it, etc, while the band goes off stage and leaves him to it, until powerfully bursting back in at the end. Musicianship + Showmanship in perfect harmony.

It was a brilliant live era for live Elton generally, and it’s a shame there isn’t an official release. See also 2001.

Agree on all counts. Saw Elton for the first time in '84...incredible show.

Elton made back to back shows at Budokan in 1974.
Elton was in a bad temper for the 1st show and made a shortcut show because his bird feathers costume was late for that day.

Next day, he became a good mood in a feather costume.
Fortunately, I saw that show.
20 songs set was just great inclucing Bennie & the Jets.
I remember one of roadies played an electric piano on Crocodile Rock.
I guess Step Into Christmas and Ray Cooper made a major debut at that night.

OT : original version of "Dazed and Confused."

The great song "Dazed and Confused" was written by Jake Holmes then covered by the Yardbirds and finally recorded by Led Zeppelin on their first LP.

Here is the original recording by Jake Holmes.

From YT :

"Dazed and Confused was written by the folk-rock singer Jake Holmes and released as a track in his debut album "The Above Ground Sound" Of Jake Holmes in 1967. That same year Jake Holmes opened for The Yardbirds in a show in New York where Jimmy Page heard the song. The song was rearranged and later became one of Led Zeppelin best-known songs, the debt to Jake Holmes however went largely unacknowledged by the band until 2012"

That must be the other way around : Page penned this song on his own in his London flat and the ugly jealous Holmes stole it from him. grinning smiley

Jimmy Page really has no shame. He's been a lot more cautious since 1982...to the point where he's dried up completely!

Sure, they completely stole it, but they also did the definitive version of it. Same with Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, same with many others. I wouldn't condone stealing, but if you're gonna do it do it like them and make them otherworldly and incredible. Its hard to fault them. Yes, they should have given proper credits to the right people instead of passing it off as their own. Having said that, you could argue the band and Jimmy Page deserve credits for the way they reinvented and, again, defined those songs.

Saw it on the 2017 BluRay 'Live At Pompeii' -- he plays the Keyboards too, the whole concert.

Yes, it's a little bit unusual to see him with (so to speak) "Pink Floyd" and singing Roger Waters' part in 'Comfortably Numb', especially if you know him being with the Stones since 1982 ....

He doesn't sing Waters' vocal parts too badly. Of all the people to sub for Waters on Comfortably Numb in Pink Floyd or Gilmour's solo bands, Rick Wright, who Waters fired from Floyd, probably did the best job. Check Gilmour's Gdansk DVD.
