Young Americans
David Bowie

They pulled in just behind the bridge
He lays her down, he frowns
Gee my life's a funny thing, am I still too young?
He kissed her then and there
She took his ring, took his babies
It took him minutes, took her nowhere
Heaven knows, she'd have taken anything, but

All night
She wants a young American
Young American, young American, she wants the young American
All night
But she wants the young American

Scanning life through the picture window
She finds the slinky vagabond
He coughs as he passes her Ford Mustang
But Heaven forbid, she'll take anything
But the freak, and his type, all for nothing
Misses a step and cuts his hand, but
Showing nothing, he swoops like a song
She cries, "Where have all Papa's heroes gone?"

All night
She wants the young American
Young American, young American, she wants the young American
All right
Well she wants the young American

All the way from Washington
Her bread winner begs off the bathroom floor
We live for just these twenty years
Do we have to die for the fifty more?

All night
He wants the young American
Young American, young American
He wants the young American
All right (all right)
Well, he wants the young American

Do you remember your President Nixon? (ooh)
Do you remember the bills you have to pay?
Or even yesterday?

Have you been the un-American? (ooh)
Just you and your idol sing falsetto (ooh)
'Bout Leather, leather everywhere, and
Not a myth left from the ghetto

Well, well, well, would you carry a razor (ooh)
In case, just in case of depression? (ooh)
Sit on your hands on a bus of survivors
Blushing at all the Afro-Sheeners

Ain't that close to love?
Well, ain't that poster love?
Well, it ain't that Barbie doll
Her hearts have been broken just like you and

All night
All night you want the young American
Young American, young American, you want the young American
All right
You want the young American

You ain't a pimp and you ain't a hustler
A pimp's got a Cadi and a lady got a Chrysler
Black's got respect, and white's got his soul train
Mama's got cramps, and look at your hands ache

(I heard the news today, oh boy)
I got a suite and you got defeat
Ain't there a man who can say no more?
And, ain't there a woman I can sock on the jaw?
And, ain't there a child I can hold without judging?
Ain't there a pen that will write before they die?
Ain't you proud that you've still got faces?
Ain't there one damn song that can make me
Break down and cry?

All night
I want the young American
Young American, young American, I want the young American
All right
I want the young American, young American
Young American, young American, I want the young American (I want what you want, I want what you want)
All night
You and I
I want you, I
Young American, young American, I want the young American
All right
And all I want is the young American
Young American, young American, I want the young American

… American bombards people with a litany of flashy expectations - Ford Mustangs, Barbie dolls, Daddy's heroes (Sports, Hollywood, etc.) material success, etc., but the disconcerting reality is that few people ever attain this tantalizing vision of success, because it's unrealistic, and when their adult lives turn out to be about divorce, alimony, and general failure, they are just confused. The speaker of Bowie's song asks questions like ""We live for just these twenty years / Do we have to die for the fifty more?" and "Ain't there a man who can say no more?" Because he is confused when he sees that a culture that only values youth and flash leaves everyone over 20 in the lurch-and there's no Hollywood hero who will step in to save the day, because that's just in the movies. In the final evaluation, those who fail to realize that the American Dream is, after all, a dream, will wind up in mid-life wondering what kind of meaning they were really supposed to have sought instead. The ironic part is that Bowie (who is British) is so smart that he manages to critique America without being obvious; most people mistakenly think this song is some kind of celebration of the American way of life. It's not. It's an intelligent critique of our shallow culture and the hollow expectations it encourages in place of anything that could actually provide meaning-religion, literature, learning, family, etc.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was about Hank Williams. Honky Tonkin' is one of many great Hank Songs. Regarding the subject of the provided link, George Jones was a national treasure. He may have been the best country music singer of all time. Many of his songs weave their way through my music collection. Going back to Hank, here's a link to his Honky Tonkin'. Still great stuff. It makes you - at least me - realize what's missing in what passes for country music today.

Uploaded some vids from December 13, 2012 Newark... i have ones from Dec 15th but due to Pay per view recording that night they have exclusivity so Youtube gives copyright strike.

link here. Lots of bouncing/jostling in the vids but fun no matter what
I used a new channel as back in 2012 I am pretty sure even Dec 13 was issue with Youtube and don't want to put primary channel at risk as they will delete entire channel with limited notice.

I have been playing guitar on and off since the age of 15 (certainly not a virtuoso by any stretch-more of an intermediate mostly self-taught up in my bedroom kind of player) but when I see something like this, it makes me want to hang it up for good (LOL)!

Juho Ranta-Maunus wins Young Guitarist of the Year 2020;14-year-old Finnish prodigy takes the crown in hotly contested competition

Per Guitar World:

Of all the Guitarist of the Year 2020 – sponsored by PRS – categories, Young Guitarist of the Year was the most hotly contested. All five of this year’s finalists were so talented that our team of editors and star judges had an extremely difficult time picking just one player, but after much deliberation, we determined that winner to be – drum roll, please – Juho Ranta-Maunus.

Juho’s prog-tinged composition, Diversity, showed exceptional control of the instrument and a vibrato far beyond his years. He knows just when to hold back and let a note ring, and when to let loose with a flurry of licks, and it was this, ahem, diversity that led to him being crowned the winner of this year’s competition.

After starting his playing journey at the age of eight, 14-year-old Juho now studies the guitar at South Ostrobothnia Music Institute in Seinäjoki, Finland. He’s a big fan of progressive rock and metal in its many forms, with Kiko Loureiro, John Petrucci and Plini among his favorite players.

What Do You Think of Laura Cox ?

She is a very pretty lady about 25 years old, who is the lead singer and guitarist of the Laura Cox band. She is certainly a virtuoso but does not have the Stones groove and feel. Here she is playing Gimme Shelter, and there is another You Tube video of her playing and singing Jumping Jack Flash. She plays JJF way too fast, and this song should always be sung by a male. Any thoughts ?

I liked it( Gimmie Shelter) . I thought her feel was good along with her technique and she played Bass as well as slide and I thought it was well done . If I had to guess -I bet she had Stones music in her DNA from her parents and was probably exposed to the Glimmer Twins brand of music when she was a youngster and she still is . Nothing wrong with her chops !
