There was a syndicated music program called "Johnny Mann's Stand Up and Cheer" that seemed directed at Richard Nixon's "Silent Majority" in the early 70's with a group of super-clean cut young people performing mostly old songs, but often doing covers of hits of the day. It was bad then, but looking at it now it's uber-creepy:

One episode was called "A Tribute to Paul Simon" (I bet Paul was thrilled...) and I recall that the peppy version of the S& G song "Cecilia" omitted the line about "...making love in the afternoon with Cecilia up in my bedroom", repeating the first stanza again instead. (Wait until you are married, kids!)

Lawrence Welk is not quite gone, as a PBS station in Southern California still plays old episodes. We used to have to watch the show with our parents in the early 60's--under protest. (This was when there was one TV in the house). Our complaints must have sunk in, because by the late 60's even my mom thought the show was too square.

But looking back now, I think the Welk show gave us a wider view of music--from international songs to show tunes to standards--that later generations didn't get, as well as something to rebel against, which I think the people who write on here about listening to the Stones with their parents missed out on.

In the early 60's, Welk had a chart hit, "Calcutta" which is pretty catchy. [www.youtube.com]

Before I found this on youtube, I had no idea that he featured guest stars in addition to his usual crew. This is a great performance by Charley Pride that the Welk show provided an excellent showcase for:

I heard that Lawrence once did a Zappa tune on his show but I was never able to find it. Anybody know more about this?

This all falls under the category "bad acid trip".... eye popping smileywinking smiley

I do recall watching the Lawrence Welk show with my Grandparents in the mid-late '60's.
He should have won an award for being one of the nicest people on earth.

Which reminds me, does anyone remember a traveling show that used this song as it's theme?
I must have been about 3 or 4 yrs. old, but clearly remember it - might have been a local show in SoCal?

Used to catch Lawrence Welk a lot when at the Grandparents' house back in the day... It brings back good memories of my family! Not that I was thrilled with it, mind you, just happy thoughts of good times...

It was cool to have some music to choose from back in the day, like Porter Wagoner and all those Nashville productions, Hee Haw included.

Even as a kid the guitar player always caught my ear, and that evolved into loving The Stones and Van Halen. Then I discovered Metal with Priest and Scorpions, and that was all she wrote: I was hooked for life!

I had no older siblings to influence me, so my progression was fairly organic, and sometimes I heard the current stuff then had to go back to the first releases by a band to get the full catalog ingrained...

Sadly, not much of the new stuff I hear really grabs me, I guess I'm a fan of "Classic Rock". And I need it loud!

Those must have been fun days. This stage model looks so cool, almost like a big boys toy. I wonder if it still exists. It would be cool to keep it as a memorabilia. Nowadays I imagine stage projects are presented virtually which is not as fun.

"If you don't know his name, you know his work. The Rolling Stones, The Who, Small Faces, The Beatles, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Bob Dylan, The Clash, Ryan Adams, Band of Horses, Patty Griffin and countless others. Without question, Glyn Johns is the sound of a large portion of rock radio and most of our record collections. In In 2015, Larry Crane visited Glyn at his beautiful home in the country south of London for this insightful and at times hilarious interview. Enjoy!"

This is a very nice TV special from Canada's CBC TV "From the Vault" series:

"In 1966, two ambitious young producers brought 20 of America's top blues musicians—including Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, and Mable Hillery—to Canada to record a special, totally unrehearsed."

"During the early 20th century, one tiny recording studio in Richmond, Indiana, had a big impact on the soundtrack of the Jazz Age. The Music Makers of Gennett Records tells the unlikely story of the Gennett Recording Studios, where many of the greatest artists in American jazz, blues, country, and gospel music first recorded."
