Hi all! Thanks to everyone and anyone for their contributions in this thread. I was honestly expecting it to sink without a trace within 24 hour, but I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in my appreciation of such a great old tune. I've amended the thread title, so feel free to share your favorite soul songs that you haven't heard in a while and that you feel others might like to hear as well.

How about Me And Mrs. Jones? Let's hear it for Billy Paul.

And how about those back stabbers? "They're smilin' in your face!"

So in Stones Minded IORR we now talk about soul classics .. amazing lets hear what you think of this classic ..

DECCA61

Well, why not? The Stones covered Sam Cooke, so they were no strangers to soul classics themselves.

Edit: By the way, thanks for posting that one! Great tune, that 1:28 opening really sets it apart, a unique, hypnotic groove.

Nice cover version by Steve Winwood.

Lots of great soul music in the 70's - before rap/hip hop killed it.

"Rock Your Baby" is more of a disco song than a "soul" song.

Disco pushed a lot of the great soul artists out of the way long before rap/hip hop rolled along.

This song from 1971 was a touchstone, referenced in the previously mentioned "Backstabbers," and a couple other soul hits in the following years.

A couple from the soul vocal quartet the Chi-Lites, so named for their Chicago origins, where they formed in 1959.

Have You Seen Here, #3 in the U.S. and UK in 1971.

Their next single, Oh Girl, a #1 U.S. hit and top 20 UK hit (#14) in 1972.

Christgau had a great line about these guys. "James Taylor is merely a wimp," he said. "Russell Thompkins, Jr. is a Wimp God."

To make a YouTube clip visible, there are two thins to look after:

The "feature=player_detailpage&" part must be deleted, so that there is no space between the "watch?" and "v=" parts of the URL.

Also, if you see an "s" (for secure) in the "http" part of the URL, the "s" must be dropped.

I have the soundtrack to Superfly and still pull it out regularly. I know I'm digressing but it reminds me of how great movie soundtracks were during that time, like American Graffiti, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, and the lesser known, The Strawberry Statement.

George is living in my village nowadays, Munstergeleen. A small town in the South of the Netherlands.

Very nice guy to talk with. See him sometimes in our pub and he loved the Stones by the way.

Wow - what motivated him to move there, did you ask? George is from *my* home town, West Palm Beach, Florida.

Love this song, and Gwen's smash hit from a year later. They were all on TK Records I believe.

Yes he moved because he met his wife in Holland. She come from Geleen, and Munstergeleen is a small village next to Geleen. He has one son. 9 months a year he lives in Munstergeleen, 3 months in the United Stats / Aruba. Very nice guy.

Hello Bluzdude, my friend,
You do not need to copy/paste all of that extra embed code.
They made it easy to post videos here on IORR, almost too easy...

What I do is:
Get the video playing on/in youtube, and then I copy
the code on the address line, then paste that simple code here.

You can see what it looks like by doing a "quote" this message,
and then look at the preview code which is the video part of it.

Hope that helps.
Here is your video....

and here is what the simple code looks like

http:// www. youtube. com /v/qsNRUQEonbs
(SPACES ADDED TO SHOW CODE VERSUS POSTING VIDEO AGAIN)

I found that code by "pulling apart" the embed code in your message.

PS
It is MUCH easier to do than this long explaination... bottom line,
Just copy the address bar code while a video is playing in youtube, and paste it here.

PPS
the only issue can be if the code has an https (NOTE THE S)
The easy solution is just remove the S... and make it http... and voila.

quote this message (only a preview quote, dont post it)
to see how little extra stuff is needed to show video.

I was obsessed with this video in '03 and still am today. I love Beyoncé.

I think this is what happened to him. I have tried to post some YouTube videos and I couldn't, too. To post the videos here I had to remove the "S" and made it http, and it worked.
