Will Kimbrough. Nashville-based. Plays with Rodney Crowell and Todd Snider. Unbelievable guitarist. I'd stack him up against anybody on the list already.

I think Ronnie is underrated.
But has anyone mentioned Lou Reed or Alex Chilton?

Yes, in fact. One of the great losses of Rock history. The split of Free, too. What a great band!

To me Adam Green of Saint Jude is highly underrated. Listen to Saint Jude´s "Diary of a Soul Fiend" CD and you´ll know what I mean.
Passed away way too early (someone must have called…), but before that he stood on stage with Mr. Ronnie at the 100 Club in London.
He sounded a bit Keith-ish, though…

Cheers, Fillmore

There were a few I was going to mention, but all have thier supporters.
But George Harrison has to be the best candidate for a truly underrated guitarist.
Overshadowed by the entire Beatles phenom, inconography and overall musical brilliance, etc..that its easy to just take him for granted.
I was listening to Beatles (65-68) and the guitar work is fantastic, the way he and John played off each other was part of that - but George was doing some really imaginitive, melodic, original work on those records.
Like on She Said, or And Your Bird Can Sing, Dear Prudence, Nowhere Man....
and the really early stuff, those great lines on songs like Im a Loser, Hard Day's Night....
Sure, he's got fans, but when people talk about the Beatles, they're talking about the BEATLES as a whole. And when they talk about great guitarists, they're talking about the usual suspect lead players like Clapton, Beck etc...
This thread just inspired me to watch the Scorsese documentary.

I always remember in the '60's back in U.K. ,George Harrison was a regular winner of the NME (New Musical Express ), best guitarist award.

That was in the day's of Jimi, Eric, Jeff and Peter Green all around at the time.

Probably won because Beatles and Stones were the big bands then and Brian Jones not appreciated as a great musician.
Obviously another name who in his lifetime not appreciated, apart from his fans.

Montrose or is that Sammy Hagar all on guitar, I hear that band praised some time...

Rick Derringer too, "all American Boy" is suppose to really be good.

Drake Levin, nice solo, 1965:

"was one of the first rock records to feature a distinctive, double-tracked guitar solo by guitarist Drake Levin."

[en.wikipedia.org]

Some classic rock stations play this.

I was very lucky to see Free, as an opening act for Blind Faith (& Delaney & Bonnie).

Robbie Robertson of the Band. Not a fan of the man personally after reading Levons book. Great guitarist though and he's not mentioned nearly enough.
