OT: The Beatles Anthology.

I'm watching some of it right now. Very hard to get enough of it. It's, hands down, one of the best, if not the best, music documentary ever. Some nice moments that captures the insanity of it all. I love the scene where they're in the car and everybody outside is going wild.

I love the bonus stuff where Paul, George and Ringo are at the desk at Abbey Road with George Martin, listening to the music and talking about it while pulling the faders up and down.

I could watch them do that sort of thing for hours. Just wonderful.

Yes that's always awesome to see. I remember the Classic Albums TV programmes where the Sex Pistols producer turns down everything so you can only hear Steve Jones' guitar. It's great. Also the part in The Beatles Anthology where George Martin plays the acoustic version of Strawberry Fields Forever is awesome. As is the part where he's explaining the bars in A Day In The Life that they "wanted to fill out with something fantastic... And this is what we came up with". smiling smiley

My favorite moment...which is very very small but to me was very eerie and chilly. Was when they introduce the Yoko story into the mix. Everything is going so well...success and fame...then all of a sudden the screen dims and then a picture of John and Yoko with the opening words of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" "She's not a girl who misses much...dooodoo doodooodoooo..." A mysterious and dark feel to what was to happen next.

Cut to George: "From this moment on they were never to be seen without each other". Cut to Ringo: "That's how they started living. Every moment together".

Have it. The Beatles Directors Cut. It has tons of stuff cut out of the DVD release and the TV. However, it ends abruptly at Let it Be and doesn't cover Abbey Road. But all in all fantastic.
Great longer segment of George talking about taking LSD for the first time, and another one where they all are getting down on Paul for announcing to the press he took LSD, which they had been trying to talk him into doing for months, then he finally did. And that was the inspiration behind Day Tripper.
There are several more cuts besides Free As A Bird and Real Love they cut, and haven't been released. And I have not seen on boots as well.
Hands down the best rockumentary ever done, and boy if the Stones could get their shit together and all of them, including Bill and Mick Taylor work together to release their Anthology.

I have the Directors Cut 93 with 5 DVDs. Means I'll have to go out and get the 10 disc set now. Sounds like they shot an amazing amount of footage.

There is a lot of great stuff they unearthed. Some great concert footage for Copenhagen, and some from Hamburg circa 1964. Comes with a bonus disc of all the promo material that came out as well...a few documentaries, and stills as well.

Interestingly, the recently released book on Lennon claims it was John, not Yoko, who insisted they never be apart to the point of going to the bathroom together. I don't think that really occurred to most people, who naturally assumed it was Yoko who wanted a front row seat in the Beatles' world. In fact, she didn't really much care for the Beatles.

The entire Anthology DVD collection is absolutely jaw-droppingly brilliant.

And what would we give for something similar on the Stones?

Yes, the Beatles' Anthology should serve as the Stones' template for their version of the project.

Yeah, I know the scene you're talking about. They're listening to Tomorrow Never Knows, and John's voice is booming out of the speakers, and it's almost as if all of them are there in that room. I love that scene. Oddly, in that particular scene, none of them refer to John as "John". They refer to him only as "Him" and "He".

As much as I like it some one elses perspective might have been nice because the four were in the eye of the hurricane and things happened they missed.

I hear you, but nothing can beat their perspective. Now I look forward to the big name director that makes a history movie using a lot of the unseen stuff that wasn't in Anthology. One can hope. Like a Ted Burns version on PBS. 10 hours of hard core documentary style. Would be amazing. And then another re-release of the the once promised alternative versions of all their studio albums. I have an interview with Ringo, about three years after Anthology where he claims they were working on that concept. Would be great!

Is the 10 DVD set an OFFICIAL expanded release...or unofficial?
When you say "it ends abruptly at Let it Be and doesn't cover Abbey Road"
is that true about the 5 disk version too? It's been a while since I've
seen it...only saw what was broadcast on free tv......but I've always wanted
to get the dvd set.

Sweet Neo...the answer is no and no. The ten disc is a bootleg. And the five disc version goes up to Abby Road and ends with the last remaining film footage ever taken of The Beatles at Lennons Ascott mansion where they are all in black, Lennon had that huge hat and the funky leather pouch on his belt. Stills from the film footage were also used on the greatest hits album Hey Jude as the cover and back.

Truly the entertainment phenomenon of the 20th century. Sinatra, Elvis, maybe Bing Crosby were all HUGE but the Beatles went beyond it.

Even today, it is impossible to go a few days without hearing about the Beatles. Try it sometime. I wish I had been around in 1964 to experience it firsthand.

I keep hoping Logie. Perhaps that will happen when Neil finally releases his archives. (and I'm not holding my breath for that) By the way, a certain canine whom we both know says you are a Neil fan. Shoot us an e-mail and we'll talk...
